WagerOnSports Releases Odds On USA Men?s Basketball Team

ST. JOHN?S, ANTIGUA (August 5, 2004)?After a shocking loss to Italy on Tuesday and a narrow win over a German team that didn?t qualify for the Summer Games, it?s easy to believe that the 2004 edition of USA Basketball?s ?Dream Team? could turn out to be a nightmare. WagerOnSports.com has created two unique betting propositions on how Team USA will fare in Athens including what (if any) medal the team will capture and if the team will go undefeated in Olympic play.

Despite poor performances in two Olympic tune-ups this week, WagerOnSports still gives the U.S. men?s basketball team a good shot to win the gold medal in Athens although the online bookmaker does not think this year?s team can extend Team USA?s unbeaten Olympic streak since NBA players were allowed to compete in the Summer Games.WagerOnSports.com currently lists the odds that the team will win the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Games at 1/3, while the chance the team captures the silver is at 2/1 odds. The odds that Team USA will finish Olympic basketball play without capturing a medal come in at 3/1 while the odds on the team winning the bronze medal are the long shot at 5/1. Meanwhile, WagerOnSports.com believes that the 2004 USA basketball team will falter at some point during Olympic play ? listing the odds of the team losing in Athens at 1/3, while the odds the team finishes the Summer Games undefeated are at 2/1.

?Although the U.S. team has not lived up to expectations so far in two Olympic warm up games this week, there is still time for this team to mesh and they should still reach the medal round in Athens,? said Michael Perry, oddsmaker at WagerOnSports.com. ?We listed the odds on Team USA capturing the gold medal as the favorite because the players are still the most talented group of individual basketball players in the world. Whether they can play together as a team and pick up their defensive efforts remains to be seen.?

WagerOnSports has opened wagering on how Team USA will fare in the men?s basketball competition at the 2004 Olympic Games and will accept wagers until the competition begins. For a complete list of Summer Games odds, please visit WagerOnSports

I don't think I'd bet on the USA taking bronze. To do that they'd have to lose in the semifinal. If they lose in the semi (which could happen), I envision these guys mailing it in and losing in the Bronze game as well, figuring Bronze wasn't worth even trying for.
