Kick:
Is USA developmental program bad? Or American players overrated in general?
Well if you are talking about men's tennis.......the USTA got super cocky about 10 years ago, and they are paying the price now.
According to some of the people I have talked to that are "close to the situation" there are a lot of players they put money into that are for lack of a better word, dicks. Selfish pricks that got everything handed to them. It has been going on for years.
USA men's tennis has been spoiled by having so many players that have reached Top 10, because of that USTA brass just got so cocky and now look what has happened.
As of now there are 8 USA players in Top 100 and three in Top 50. I guess that is ok, but with the money the USTA has and the population base not to mention all the amazing perks USA players get (Wild Cards up their ass, etc.) it is kind of pathetic. As for some "Top juniors" in USA......not a lot, not exactly a ton coming up. It has been bleak for quite some time actually. There are about 6 or 7 real good NCAA players that just finished or have one year left, so there is some hope there. Steve Johnson won a bunch of NCAA Titles and is currently 100 in the world so that ain't bad. But the dude has no backhand and moves slow.
Also it is worth noting that between 100 and 500 there are not a lot of USA players that are ranked in that area. Which is very sad.
Is USA men's tennis over-rated? Umm not really. Is USA men's tennis in "bad shape" well a bit.
But bottom line with the money that the USTA has and the huge huge huge perks USA players get, it should be wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better.
