Question for the forum here, which is better of the two operating systems? I only ask because this will be a gift (I'm buying them a computer) for my in-laws who are basically computer illiterate but have used Windows PC's in the past. So, there is no use in getting a Mac for them and I'm unsure if they will understand either of the two operating systems. Any advice would be terrific.

To clarify - Windows 8 is sketchy and shit is hidden and weird and looks like an app based OS.

Go with Windows 10 as Microsoft realized their mistake and made is the way every human likes it.

Joker is on the right path.

Windows 10 is the way to go. The answer I have given most is, you know that Windows 8 is a POS when money hungry Microsoft is willing to give away the next version of Windows for free.

It makes me wonder if they have discovered a huge security flaw that is not fixable through patch work. We have had a plethora of major data breaches that have occurred since the 2012 release of Windows 8. Target, Home Depot, China, banks galore, etc.

I have installed this software on many a baby boomers computer to help make Windows 8 more user friendly for the crowd that does not handle change well. It is also available for Windows 10 and can help a user have Windows 10 but also navigate with the familiarity of Windows 7. - http://www.classicshell.net/

Definitely

I'll give you free user support in English if you need to delete it

That's unheard of

If you have windows 8 and miss windows 7 layout, this is definitely for you. You still have a way to your start screen and apps, but it becomes a button you click instead of the default to load to.

One of our clients fired their bookkeeper last year and came to us. We had to have a meeting with the old bookkeeper and she was less than thrilled during the get together but none the less came to our office.

During the meeting she was looking for a spreadsheet on her laptop and having trouble finding it and made a remark about Windows 8. I asked her if she wanted the Windows 7 layout and she said yes but she had version 8.0, not 8.1 so she couldn't add the start button. I told her about Classic Shell, installed it and had it back in her hands less than 5 minutes later.

We finish the meeting, she says thanks and then goes on her merry way. A month goes by and I receive a thank you phone call from her letting me know that she has saved hours of work because she can easily navigate her computer now. The only time a fired bookkeeper has called to thank us. - lol

Good luck

isn't the better way to put 7 on a loaded smart guy built PC and just ignore all the crappy 8 and stupid "Window" dressing 10 in a sleek running machine..:0corn

To be honest, I have never used either of them (8 or 10). I have an older machine that has 7 on it and I rarely use that but will if I need to access something windows only and not mac compatible. This computer will be a gift for my in-laws and they will only use it to Skype/video gchat/email us. I was thinking something like this:

Any better suggestions?

I think that's fine - I'm not a fan of the processor but it won't be an issue for what they use it for

It would be beneficial to find one with 4 gb of RAM especially with video chat but you can get by with 2gb

I think you made a good call going with a Windows 10 machine over a chrome book and the Solid State Drives are all the rave the past 18 months.

I did a quick amazon check and couldn't find anything better for that price.

OS

I would not go with Windows 7 over 10 on a new computer built today. Windows 10 resembles an upgraded Windows 7 just like Windows 7 was a more powerful Windows XP. Going forward programs will be built with Windows 10 in mind especially knowing that Microsoft is giving it away to Windows 7 owners.

As far as the upgrade to 10, I would wait a little longer as more kinks are straightened out but I would definitely upgrade to 10 before time runs out.0

I'm still using Vista. :0003

I never had a machine last this long and virtually trouble free.

I get attacked all the time using torrent sites but Norton always gets them. I'm one of the rare ones that won't go without Norton and Norton poses no problems for my computer. I swear by them.

My old PC still works too, it is slow though (it has windows 7 on it). I think they make them faster now. I find with my old PC, the spyware is what gets me. Don't think the anti-virus software catches all of it. I use McAfee and don't see a difference between that, AVG, and Norton. I could be wrong though. Don't use that PC very often though, my wife uses it more than me.
