When ever I open up a news clip or song clip and need the windows media player I get this:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:")."

It used to work, but strated getting that a week ago, and am clueless on how to fix that.

KMA, it doesn't work for any format. The only time my media player works is when I put in a dvd, or play music that is already stored on my hardrive...It won't work for anything on the internet.and this only recently started to do this, it used to work just fine..did a mcafree scan and nothing would indicate that this is a virus.

Thanks for the extra info!!! This is happening with many music sites who no longer have operating links due to shutting down or removing music files.

One way to test would be to open the URL directly from within the MediaPlayer without using the browser ... i.e., copy the entire URL into the clipboard, and paste it into the open URL box in Wthe MediaPlayer and see what happens.

If you are uptodate with the Windowsupdates, then it is also possible that the new security elements of MediaPlayer got installed on your system as well. I am also assuming that yah have upgraded your MediaPlayer to version 10, in which case there would have been a confirmation pop-up telling you how to deal with licensing. Changing those settings may be difficult, if not impossible, because the MediaPlayer is so well embedded into the Windows Operating Environment. I wouldn't recommend rebuilding the entire system just for this reason.

Yah might want to consider using WinAmp or RealPlayer as an alternative until this MediaPlayer issue gets resolved.
