Winning ways . . . :mj07:

Iowa State(+10')(-105) over Texas A&M (1.25*)
- - A live dog here. Cyclone's past ATS and SU road woes have given way to a team looking to cash in on the way they have played; turning a corner on an uncharacteristic spate of red zone turnovers; plug in RB Stevie Hicks; and about anything A&M has and does, ISU's healthy front line players has and does about as well or better.
"Stevie's going to help us in a lot of ways."

Indiana(+18')(-105) over Michigan State (1.25*)
- - BGFalcon touched the points I see and would emphasize, and said it well: "Hoosiers hung around last week until getting worn down by the strong Buckeye defense. That won't be a problem this week against Michigan St.'s non-existent defense. Sparty is in a free-fall since pissing away the Ohio St. game and John L. won't get them back on track this year. Indiana will keep at them the whole game and have enough offense to stay within the number."

Tennessee(-13')(-105) over South Carolina (1.25*)
- - Alabama and Notre Dame notwithstanding, I see the Vol's rededication during their bye week paying dividends here against a Gamecocks team that is extended to the brink of another mashing.

TCU(-6')(-105) over San Diego State (1.25*)
- - Once again I see it as the right side for backing a no nonsense team that has thrived on the road, is physical and fast at the point of attack, values the football, and finds ways to win. ("Run, Forrest, Run!" ~ Fisher DeBerry)

The Oklahoman (10.29.05)

Here's what we can expect from Oklahoma-Nebraska. The Ruf-Neks will not taunt the Cornhuskers. Bill Callahan will not call OU fans ******* hillbillies.

At least, we hope both of those hold true. Anything else, though, is anybody's guess.

Before the season, you'd have counted Nebraska as a win. A couple weeks back, you'd have counted it as a loss. After the performances Saturday by both teams, who knows?

To recap:

OU should have blown out Baylor, but could easily have lost to Baylor.

Nebraska could have beaten Missouri, but was blown out by Missouri.

Nothing to see here. Let's move along.

OU (4-3) lost to TCU, UCLA and Texas -- teams that are a combined 21-1. The Sooners could have been beaten by Tulsa (5-3), Kansas (3-4) and Baylor (4-3).

Nebraska (5-2) should have beaten Texas Tech (now 6-1). The Huskers should have been beaten by Pittsburgh (4- 4) and could have been beaten by Iowa State (4-3).

Hard to draw conclusions from that. Let's get defensive.

OU's defense, which struggled with fundamentals and assignments early, has become a strength. But Baylor punched out a nice second-half drive. And then, safety Lewis Baker let Dominique Zeigler get behind him for a 55-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left.

Nebraska's defense has been formidable but suffered a setback at Missouri. Brad Smith produced 480 total yards and scored on runs of 79 and 45 yards.

Hmmm. No definition yet. And both offenses have been repeat offenders. Nebraska ranks 91st in total offense, OU 97th.

Though the Sooners have shown flashes of life, they haven't put together a complete game. After scoring 24 points and putting up 299 first-half yards against Baylor, OU managed three points and 147 second-half yards (35 yards in the third quarter).

Nebraska's offense was awful early in the season. With Norman's own Zac Taylor at quarterback (281 yards Saturday), the Huskers have improved. But they continue to lack an identity, ranking 91st nationally in total offense.

Intangibles? For simplicity's sake, let's stick with Saturday's games.

OU missed several opportunities to put Baylor away. Joe Jon Finley's false start near the goal line probably cost OU a touchdown. Later, Jacob Gutierrez's fumble cost at least a field goal.

Nebraska had turnovers on three straight possessions in the second half. After rallying from a 14-0 deficit into a 24-all halftime tie, the Huskers missed an opportunity to take the lead when Terrence Nunn fumbled inside the 5. Missouri went 97 yards for a TD and never trailed again.

By Sunday evening some oddsmakers had established OU as a one-point favorite. Others had Nebraska by one.

But the last time OU won in Lincoln was 1987.

Any takers?
