UW football: Stocco on starting track
University of Wisconsin senior quarterback John Stocco completed his last pass of Thursday's practice.
"It's actually a pass to (right tackle) Eric Vanden Heuvel, just a little thing they do every week," UW coach Bret Bielema said. "That's how they end Thursday and Friday."
With that, Bielema indicated the injured Stocco is on track to start on Saturday at Iowa, although a final decision won't be made until the day of the game.
"John Stocco just completed the last pass of practice, so everything is in order and, hopefully, we'll be moving in the right direction," Bielema said.
Bielema said he was encouraged by the progress made this week by Stocco, who injured his right (throwing) shoulder against Penn State last week.
"As we've seen all along, John's a really tough kid," Bielema said. "He's looked great all week, just going about and doing the things he does. He's been able to handle the situation and everything that comes with it day by day."
Bielema said Stocco's injury was to the A/C joint and is similar to one suffered by former UW quarterback Jim Sorgi, who was knocked out of a game but returned to play the following week.
A direct blow to the shoulder, like the one Stocco took when his right shoulder was driven into the turf on a hit by Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny, can separate the A/C joint and is commonly called a shoulder separation.
Doctors have a system for categorizing separations. In type I injuries, the low end of the scale, the capsule and ligaments of the A/C joint have been sprained but not completely torn.
Bielema said Stocco, who has started 35 straight games, did not injure his ribs.
Stocco started the opener against Bowling Green, despite missing more than two weeks of practice following arthroscopic knee surgery.
"It'll be a gameday decision, but the thing John has been able to be since he's been here, has been through so many things in his career already," Bielema said. "At the beginning of this season, being injured and out basically for about 2 weeks, really didn't practice until the Wednesday going into the Bowling Green game and didn't miss a beat, because of what he's been able to do so many times before. That's the benefit of having a fifth-year quarterback that's won as many games as he has."
Bielema said he expects most of the rest of the team to be healthy, except junior backup defensive end Brandon Kelly, who is out with an ankle injury. Freshman backup cornerback Kim Royston, who missed the last game with an undisclosed injury, is expected to play.
Freshman Josh Nettles, who plays on all the special teams, will miss the game to attend his grandfather's funeral in Florida.
