Shadow of the Camp
From Wisconsin State Journal -
UW football: Stocco on starting track

University of Wisconsin senior quarterback John Stocco completed his last pass of Thursday's practice.
"It's actually a pass to (right tackle) Eric Vanden Heuvel, just a little thing they do every week," UW coach Bret Bielema said. "That's how they end Thursday and Friday."

With that, Bielema indicated the injured Stocco is on track to start on Saturday at Iowa, although a final decision won't be made until the day of the game.

"John Stocco just completed the last pass of practice, so everything is in order and, hopefully, we'll be moving in the right direction," Bielema said.

Bielema said he was encouraged by the progress made this week by Stocco, who injured his right (throwing) shoulder against Penn State last week.

"As we've seen all along, John's a really tough kid," Bielema said. "He's looked great all week, just going about and doing the things he does. He's been able to handle the situation and everything that comes with it day by day."

Bielema said Stocco's injury was to the A/C joint and is similar to one suffered by former UW quarterback Jim Sorgi, who was knocked out of a game but returned to play the following week.

A direct blow to the shoulder, like the one Stocco took when his right shoulder was driven into the turf on a hit by Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny, can separate the A/C joint and is commonly called a shoulder separation.

Doctors have a system for categorizing separations. In type I injuries, the low end of the scale, the capsule and ligaments of the A/C joint have been sprained but not completely torn.

Bielema said Stocco, who has started 35 straight games, did not injure his ribs.

Stocco started the opener against Bowling Green, despite missing more than two weeks of practice following arthroscopic knee surgery.

"It'll be a gameday decision, but the thing John has been able to be since he's been here, has been through so many things in his career already," Bielema said. "At the beginning of this season, being injured and out basically for about 2 weeks, really didn't practice until the Wednesday going into the Bowling Green game and didn't miss a beat, because of what he's been able to do so many times before. That's the benefit of having a fifth-year quarterback that's won as many games as he has."

Bielema said he expects most of the rest of the team to be healthy, except junior backup defensive end Brandon Kelly, who is out with an ankle injury. Freshman backup cornerback Kim Royston, who missed the last game with an undisclosed injury, is expected to play.

Freshman Josh Nettles, who plays on all the special teams, will miss the game to attend his grandfather's funeral in Florida.

Thank you so much! It's indeed a very good piece of info. If Stocco is starting on Sat, my money is on Wisconsin for sure

THIS WEEK'S GAME: Wisconsin at Iowa, Nov. 11 ? Border War Extraordinaire. Just in case people don't understand the geography, Wisconsin and Iowa are unfriendly rivals who always fight tooth-and-nail. More to the point for the Badgers, Iowa has won each of the past four years by an average of 14 points per game. That doesn't sit well with them. One other factor? This marks first-year coach Bret Bielema's opportunity to coach against his alma mater.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Tyler Donovan ? Prior to last week's final two drives against Penn State, Donovan's most extensive action came against Western Illinois on Sept. 9 ? and his lone completion was an interception returned for a touchdown. But that came while working with the second unit. Bret Bielema expects Donovan, if he's the starter, to perform better when playing with starters.

TB P.J. Hill ? The nation's No. 5 rusher showed no ill effects last week from the neck injury that limited his time against Illinois. That's bad news for an Iowa defense that couldn't slow down Northwestern's Tyrell Sutton (168 yards) last week.

DE Matt Shaughnessy ? Northwestern enjoyed success when it pressured Iowa QB Drew Tate from his blind side, which is exactly where Shaughnessy comes from. Look for him to spend his share of time in the Iowa backfield.

ROSTER REPORT: Starting QB John Stocco suffered a separated shoulder and two broken ribs in last week's Penn State game, according to an anonymous source cited by the Wisconsin State Journal. However, that's not a guarantee Stocco won't play Saturday against Iowa. Head coach Bret Bielema termed him day-to-day.

The rest of Wisconsin's roster remains healthy. Freshman TB P.J. Hill is fine after missing half of the Oct. 28 game against Illinois with a neck stinger.

Thanks to their good fortune with health, the Badgers' starting lineup has been remarkably static this season. Aside from Kurt Ware starting at defensive end for Joe Monty in the season opener ? for disciplinary reasons ? the starting defense has been the same every day.

The offense hasn't been much different. The quarterback, tailback and offensive line have been the same every game. Other than that, it's just been a matter of whether the Badgers' first play needs two tight ends, a fullback or a conventional alignment.
