New coach for Hawks, will stress defense as Hawks problems have been all on that side of the ball. He will sit guys if they do not play D (although it's hard to bench the Big Dog). Cutting down turnovers becomes a huge priority. Last night in his first game as head coach Hawks gave up 79, a huge improvement. Wiz cannot score the ball as they would like and are best suited to a slow down half court game. Jordan will want to make up for his horrible performance on Thursday and could score a bunch, but that will prevent others from "filling it up", (namely Stackhouse). I look for an under here. The number started at 187 and is now at 186(Canbet) and 185.5 (Olympic and others)

Call it in the 175-180 range.

Luck to all.

under was never in doubt

you might want to check the team total for the Lakers on Sunday when they go up against the Raptors. Just as I posted last Sunday, the Lakers can name their number as the Raptors have no one to stop them.

team total of 102' just gets there, but a win is a win. Lakers decided to only give Shaq the ball once in the 3rd quarter to make me sweat this one.

Tomorrow take a look at the Utah team total. The Raptors defense will play the pick and roll as well as Memphis has in their two games against the Jazz this season. Game could get really ugly.

I like your thinking jay...do you keep track of team's offense/defense schemes on a nightly basis? I'd like to see more feedback/input from you...I think you have some really great ideas to offer...

Thanks Roger. In answer to your question, I put a lot of value in watching teams; call it visual inspection. And yes I do look at offensive/defensive patterns. I don't throw out stats and trends by any means, nor do I discount line moves. However, I figure most of what is out there is also available to the linemaker, so when looking for my edge, I find staying with a team on a 3 or 4 game run gives me a chance to probe deeper. A couple of examples are this recent road trip of the Raptors and the Hawks since the new coach took over.

When trying to put your stamp on a team a coach in the middle of the season, with less practice time, has to do litle things. Stotts has concentrated on the Hawks defense because it was so glaringly terrible and therefore easy to change in a hurry.

Hubie Brown in Memphis was a textbook example, when he took over. He even told the press his first 5 games were going to be evaluations.

The Raptors cannot play defense. Whether they are uncoachable or simply outmanned, I think its the former, they make the same mistakes over and over again. This sets up tonight's play for me.

Jazz- best coached team in the league, most disciplined, at home against the Raptors-undermanned, back to back, in altitude, playing defense poorly.

I cannot factor whether the Raptors jump shooters will hit or not, so I don't play the game total. I do factor that the Raptors will not stop the pick and roll, so I wait for the team total for the Jazz to come out and play it.

I don't know if the folks here in this forum simply want picks, or detailed explanations for the plays. If I have time, I will post my analysis of why I'm making a play. I do not play every night. Sometimes there are no plays worth the risk vs the reward. I think tonight the Jazz team total in the first half and in the game are worth it.

Knicks +6 is an interesting look. How many times have the Spurs covered that number on the road? But I'm not playing it. Spurs size down low vs the smallish Knicks makes this a crapshoot to me. I do not wish to gamble. I'm looking for more evidence, call it my due diligence, before I invest.

Hope this long-winded response answered your question.

Best of luck to you and Happy New Year!

jay - thanks for the response...as for your question on what the people on this form want...it's hard to say or speak for everyone...but I think it's safe to say that there are those who like a little reasoning behind a pick and those that just like a good track record and winners...as for your visual inspection theory/system...I agree 100% that you have to watch the nba to bet the nba...and that goes for any sport/team that you gamble on...stats and trends are cool and are a valuable source/tool in cappin' games...but if you're not watching a sport night in and night out you really shouldn't be puttin' money on the line...in cappin' the nba, and totals specifically, teams's offense/defense schemes play a major role in the outcome...if we had some way of getting a coach's game plan before each game we would be all rich...LOL...but seriously the tendacies of a team/coach to run a specific scheme against other teams is valuable stuff to know...if you have any info on that I would love to see it...
