Struggling Mercury down to nine players for next two games
The Phoenix Mercury will not make a roster addition until July 29 and will have only nine players available for the next two games.
Guard Leilani Mitchell is out for games against Minnesota on Saturday and Chicago on Wednesday, returning to Australia for personal reasons.
That leaves the Mercury (15-9) with only four reserves going into the final 10 games of the regular season. Dallas and Los Angeles lost Friday night so Phoenix still is in sole possession of second in the WNBA going into Saturday.
The Mercury plan to add a player to replace forward Sancho Lyttle, who suffered a season-ending knee injury June 30. They cannot do so, though, until after the All-Star Game on July 28 because of salary-cap restrictions. The Mercury are expected to sign a power forward, but who and how much can be expected from that person is unknown.
Phoenix has lost four of its last five games, three of those by a combined 13 points. Now, the Mercury face defending-champion Minnesota (13-10) in a game that will decide the season series the tiebreaker edge between them in playoff seeding.
