A few things on this.

First and foremost, it's staggering the numbers that are out there. In regards to small business marketing, or marketing in general, I find Social Media to be a crucial aspect to really position a business successfully. Replacing "What is your website?" is "Are you guys on Facebook?" Between promotions, ads, contests, announcements, etc, Social Media can reach potential customers in ways never thought possible.

That said, I had a few issues with the presentation.

It brought up how Generation Y was replacing Baby Boomers. That's a pretty blanket statement. That's like saying every day, you get closer to death. I understand the context, and it's certainly a common sense approach to what they are trying to say, but then later in the video they bring up how the fastest growing population on Facebook is 55-65 year old women. There is certainly a dichotomy of what they are trying to say...

The video also said that in 2009, "a Department of Education study revealed that online students outperformed those receiving face to face instruction." What were the qualifications for "outperformed?" In many cases, those taking online courses have the potential to receive higher marks, as there are no real checks or balances to the system. For example, if I took Calculus II online, who's to say that Jeremy Boudrot is taking the class, and not someone else who has already mastered the coursework? This is my first online class, and it is going to be my last. I don't consider myself to be "old fashioned," but this method of learning is not conducive to my study habits.

Also, "blogging" has become so specialized. Many are not reflections on products, or advertisements at all. I have a blog on LinkedIn about management (styles, techniques, methodologies, best practices). Do I consider myself a "Blogger?" Absolutely not. I just found it to be a forum I could open up, and have people discuss ideas that they can try in the workplace. I don't consider myself to be an expert, but I just try to give real life examples of what can be done to better improve business processes. I can't say I've ever pitched a book, although I have commented on certain styles (Buckingham's strength based movement, Maxwell). Even still, I don't think John Maxwell is crying in his oatmeal that I may have been critical of one of his books. (He's probably rich enough, that he has someone to cry in his oatmeal for him anyways...but the bigger point is that it takes a village...)

Furthermore, and this is more a social observation, than a comment on the video, are we not concerned that Social Media is going to hurt communication? There is a fine line here. Email has become the preferred method of communication in business. In my recent experience, I have found more is achieved with an email than a phone call. Also, gone are the days of cold calling. Many find the telephone to be a nuisance. That said, we need to hone our writing skills, and utilize a different skill set. If that can be achieved, then great. However, the concern is recognizing the difference between personal and professional writing. Sending an email to a friend is one thing, but if you throw in a "WTF?" in a business email, not a great idea. Web jargon and slang have almost become accepted forms of communication, and eventually it will erode away at our societal fabric. I understand this may sound very Ivory Tower in thought, but I also do not want my children growing up in a world where they can't laugh, but instead simply say "LOL" in lieu of...

We are in constant contact with everything around us, and that can be a very good thing. However, it can also be detrimental. It's as if we feel obligated to be stimulated 24/7 with the daily Groupon, or an email, or text message. As the Baby Boom takes a back seat, we're going to have to get ready for a wild ride into the future.

Anyone care to comment? Certainly would like to hear other people's opinions on this.

Just a word of advice. I would edit out your name. Google search will connect your name with a gambling site as well as all your posts no matter how tongue in cheek, they will be misunderstood by a potential employer.

Enjoy the anonymity while you still can. :popcorn2
