Women's British Open

Women's British Open

Outright plays (1.5pts):

Lorena Ochoa to win 16/1 e.w. @ SkyBet, William Hill and Ladbrokes
The move to an inland course should suit Ochoa as she will have had very little experience of links golf. She did, however, lie in 4th place after two rounds last year on her debut in this event, but she looks a more realistic prospect to win this year. She ranks 2nd only to Annika Sorenstam in scoring average on Tour this year and so warrants reasonably short odds. Sorenstam is far from dominant so 16/1 looks more than fair.

Mi-Hyun Kim to win 33/1 e.w. @ Stan James, Bet365 and Tote
Kim ranks 5th in scoring average on Tour this year, so on that basis alone she should be at shorter odds. She has yet to win this year, but with ten top-10 finishes this year - ranked 3rd behind Sorenstam and Ochoa - she has been in contention many times. The short-hitting Kim has struggled on the links courses used in the last two years, but is another selection who should favour the parkland Old course at Sunningdale. She did finish 2nd to Se Ri Pak there in 2001.

Karen Stupples to win 66/1 e.w. @ Victor Chandler and Tote
Stupples missed the cut at Sunningdale three years ago, but she was a different player then. She had missed as many cuts as she had made by the event in 2001, but this year she opened the season in great form, finishing 2nd in the Australian Ladies Masters and then winning the Welch's/Fry's Championship on the LPGA Tour and to prove that was not just a purple patch, she has finished 3rd in the Ladies English Open and 4th in the Evian Masters in her last two starts. This seems a very large price for someone who went head-to-head with Annika Sorenstam last week and virtually matched her shot-for-shot.

Going with one more speculative top 5 @ 5dimes.
I am glutton for punishment on Euro soil after dismal British Open--but just in case we get some good winds here vs 1st 3 days of relative calm in the mens I am going to give this one a shot
Gloria Park 16/1

a few more 72 holes
Jones -115 over Davies
MH Kim -102 over Inkster
Gloria Park -102 over Moodie

beware of latter as Moodie finished 3rd here in 2001.

Matchup plays (1.5pts unless stated):

Cristie Kerr to beat Laura Diaz -111 @ Paddy Power [4.5pts]
Just one statistic needed to justify this play: Kerr holds a 10-0-0 h2h lead over Diaz in 2004.
(also available at SkyBet)

Pat Hurst to beat Aree Song -145 @ Five Dimes
With just one top-10 finish since March, this has been a slightly disappointing rookie year so far for Song. She struggled to finish 45th last week on her debut in Europe and should struggle to do better around Sunningdale. The veteran has finished ahead in six of their last seven common events and so more than justifies these odds.

Becky Morgan to beat Aree Song -125 @ Stan James [3pts]
Better odds with Morgan who has a lot of experience of European golf. She finished in the top-20 on this course two years ago and is playing well enough to do so again. Shouldn't need such a high finish for this match though.

Meg Mallon to beat Juli Inkster -111 @ Centrebet
Following two wins and a 6th place finish in her last three events, Mallon is arguable the form player in this field. That should be enough to beat Inkster, but having finished ahead of her in each of the last four Women's British Opens, she certainly does appear to have the edge in this match.
(also available at Paddy Power, SkyBet and Expekt)

Meg Mallon to beat Se Ri Pak -108 @ Five Dimes
Mallon's record in this event is not as good as Pak's, but the Korean is struggling with her swing and hasn't recorded a top-10 finish in twelve weeks. No surprise that Mallon has finished ahead of her in every event in that period. It will take a dramatic reversal of form for this match to be settled in Pak's favour.
(also available at Stan James)

Suzann Pettersen to beat Seol-An Jeon -114 @ Expekt [4.5pts]
I don't understand this matchup. Pettersen had been in poor form in May/June, but has recorded two top-10 finishes in her last four starts and has experience in this event and on this course. Jeon has recorded just one top-10 finish in the last three months and has never played in Europe, let alone on this course. A tall ask for her to perform to her potential in British conditions.

Outrights - FINAL RESULT: 2-1; +62.63pts

Ochoa 4th
Kim mc
Stupples 1st

It might have difficult for Stupples to come back after leading for two rounds, but relinquishing the lead in the third, but not after the way she started in the final round: eagle, albatross! Teske and Bowie did get close, but Stupples pulled away on the back nine for a very impressive five-shot win. Ochoa would not have matched Stupples' 19-under-par score, so a place win with the Mexican is a good result.

Matchups - FINAL RESULT: 2-4-0; -6.17pts

Kerr/Diaz WON by 1
Hurst/Song WON by 3
Morgan/Song LOST by 6
Mallon/Inkster LOST by 4
Mallon/Pak LOST by 7
Pettersen/Jeon LOST by 9

Poor matchups and lucky not to suffer a bigger loss as the only wins were by narrow margins. Doesn't take the gloss off a great tournament though!
