Woods, Mickelson ready for battle at U.S. Open
PGA Golf betting fans have two major events to get excited about this week ? the 108th U.S. Open and The Return of Tiger.
The 2008 U.S. Open, the second of golf?s four Majors, starts Thursday at the par-71 South Course at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
betED.com has odds and prop bets available for the U.S. Open, which many expect will come down to a battle between world No. 1 Tiger Woods, who?s playing in his first tournament since the Masters, and his nemesis, No. 2 Phil Mickelson, a San Diego native.
Woods is a +275 favorite to win the U.S. Open and Mickelson isn?t far back at +400.
Other top contenders include Sergio Garcia (+1000), Vijay Singh (+1800), and Padraig Harrington (+1800).
Last year?s winner, Angel Cabrera, is well back at +6000.
Props include whether the U.S. Open champion will be decided in a Playoff (Yes, +225; No, -325), and if there will be a Hole in One (Yes, +170; No, -210).
Woods, who had minor knee surgery after the Masters, is a two-time U.S. Open champion and has dominated Torrey Pines in his career, winning six Buick Invitationals on the city course, including the past four.
Mickelson, also known as Lefty, has won the Buick three times at Torrey Pines.
At 7,643 yards, the course will be the longest in U.S. Open history. And just as they are for all U.S. Opens, the fairways will be narrow, ranging in width from about 24 yards to 33 yards at their widest.
There will be eight past champions in the field this week and those eight players account for 12 titles. Among them are two-time champions Lee Janzen, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Woods.
The 2008 U.S. Open will be aired on ESPN Thursday and Friday and on NBC Saturday and Sunday.
