World Series props update

by Mark Rothstein

How are your baseball prop bets looking two games into the 2006 World Series? Here?s a listing of the odds posted for each World Series prop bet on Saturday afternoon (prior to the start of Game 1 in Detroit), and a rundown of how each of the categories look.

League to win World Series will be . . .

American League --- -220

National League --- +180

There?s no clear leader for this one yet. The Cardinals stole home-field advantage in the Series by beating the Tigers on the road in Game 1, but Detroit grabbed some momentum by bouncing back with a chilly Game 2 win over St. Louis on Sunday night.

Total games for World Series will be . . .

4 games --- +500

5 games --- +260

6 games --- +180

7 games --- +300

Well, the four games option is now a definite loser. And with Cards ace Chris Carpenter and red-hot Kenny Rogers both hitting the mound in (separate) games ahead, five games isn?t looking great either. Six games was the favorite for this prop bet before the series began, and six games is still looking like the best place to have put your money.

Will World Series winner clinch at home . . .

Yes --- EVEN

No --- -130

If St. Louis is going to win the series AND clinch at home, they?re going to have to sweep the next three games in their own stadium. The Tigers, meanwhile, could take one or two games on the road, and then come back home to close out the series. If you think Detroit are going to be the champs, the Yes option is the better bet here right now.

World Series MVP will be . . .

Albert Pujols --- +450

Magglio Ordonez --- +650

Jim Edmonds --- +800

Curtis Granderson --- +1000

Carlos Guillen --- +1000

Placido Polanco --- +1000

Ivan Rodriguez --- +1000

Brandon Inge --- +1200

Todd Jones --- +1200

Kenny Rogers --- +1200

Scott Rolen --- +1200

David Eckstein --- +1300

Chris Carpenter --- +1500

Juan Encarnacion --- +1500

Craig Monroe --- +1500

Justin Verlander --- +1500

Adam Wainwright --- +1500

Scott Spiezio --- +1800

Field --- +800

Kenny Rogers? efforts on Sunday night (eight innings pitched, two hits, zero runs allowed, five strikeouts) make him the frontrunner for World Series MVP right now. Not only was Rogers effective in Game 2, but he prevented Detroit from going down a deadly 0-2 at home, and his scoreless innings streak has been getting a ton of press. Another win for Rogers later in the set, and a title for Detroit, and he?ll be tough to beat.

Craig Monroe has two home runs for the Tigers over the first two games, while Carlos Guillen has a couple of multi-hit games and a pair of RBI. No one else in Detroit?s lineup has done much yet. Game 1 starter Justin Verlander was roughed up and took a loss, while closer Todd Jones almost blew Game 2 for Detroit with a very shaky ninth inning.

For the Cardinals, Game 1 winner Anthony Reyes went eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four batters, and that performance will earn him another start in the series. Reyes would be considered part of the FIELD for this bet, as would Game 2 loser Jeff Weaver, who surrendered three runs on nine hits in just five innings.

Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols both homered for the Cardinals in Game 1, while Jim Edmonds has two RBI in two games for St. Louis. However, it was Reyes who got them that win in Game 1; no other Cardinals player would be ahead of him here right now.

Will there be a series sweep . . .

Yes --- +500

No --- -800

Did you bet Yes on this one? If so, that shaky ninth by Jones on Sunday gave you some hope. Unfortunately, though, the Tigers held on for the win, and there will be no sweep.

Position of World Series MVP will be . . .

Position Player --- -220

Pitcher --- +180

Rogers and Reyes are trying to make ?Pitcher? the winning bet here, but offensive stars are likely to still come forward over the next three, four, or five games of the ?06 Series.

Exact series result will be . . .

Cardinals win 4 - 0 --- +2000

Cardinals win 4 - 1 --- +1000

Cardinals win 4 - 2 --- +600

Cardinals win 4 - 3 --- +575

Tigers win 4 - 0 --- +475

Tigers win 4 - 1 --- +300

Tigers win 4 - 2 --- +300

Tigers win 4 - 3 --- +500

So no sweeps, but the Cardinals can still win the next three games at home and pay off at a big +1000. In fact, the Cards winning the World Series at all would be lucrative for their supporters, with six-game (+600) and seven-game (+575) victories both high on the odds chart. A Tigers win pays less, but if you took them to roll to the title in five games you will have to hope that they?re able to sweep the next three down in St. Louis.
