World Series of Poker Main event has started. Looks like 1116 entrants on Day 1 and also looks like Costanza got lucky and put a bad beat on his opponent :0corn

Fri, 03 Jul 2009 20:56:35 Jason Alexander Hits Runner-Runner A player raised from early position to 1,150 and Jason Alexander made it 3,200 to go from late position. Action folded around and the original raiser who called the three bet. The flop came Jd 5d Ad . After a check from early position, Alexander bet 6,000. His opponent then moved all in for 26,500. After tanking for several minutes, Alexander made the call. Early Position: 8d 6d Alexander: 10h 10d The board ran out Jd 5d Ad Jh Js giving Jason Alexander runner-runner full house to overtake his opponent's flopped flush. Alexander takes out his opponent and moves to 84,500.

Feel free to add updates...I'll do the same.

Day 1a is History
Amidst a sandstorm of pomp and ceremony, the Main Event of the 2009 WSOP has finally arrived, and Day 1a is already in the books. Play began at high noon with the first round of 1,116 players taking their seats to begin this long quest for glory. As expected, we had a homogenous mix of top-tier pros and hopeful amateurs, and there's about a one-in-four chance that our 2009 Main Event Champion was in the room somewhere today. Among those who chose the first starting day were former World Champions Johnny Chan and Jerry Yang, 2009 bracelet winners Jason Mercier, Vitaly Lunkin, Roland de Wolfe, Greg Mueller, Keven "Stammdog" Stammen, Jordan Smith and a whole grab bag of A-list pros. Also in the field were a slew of faces from the entertainment world: baseball pitcher Orel Hershiser, actors-turned-pro Jennifer Tilly and Gabe Kaplan, rapper Nelly, and funnymen Brad Garrett and Jason Alexander. Along the way, a number of notables found an early end to their Series. John Phan, Jan Von Halle, Davidi Kitai, Nick Frangos, Freddy Deeb, Matt Glantz, Mark Vos, Pieter de Korver, Isaac Haxton, David Grey, Steve Billirakis, Allen Cunningham, and Andy Bloch have all had their World Series cut short on Day 1 of this final event. At the end of the night, it looks like Redmond Lee has worked his way to the top of the leader board, stuffing his bag with 134,275 technicolor chips. Among the other big stacks are Jason Riesenberg (93,650), Jason Alexander (89,575), Lex Veldhuis (84,000), and Eli Elezra (83,375). The next group of Main Eventers will be here at noon tomorrow to try their luck at their own Day 1. If history is any indication, the number of runners should be a tad lower tomorrow as it's the Fourth of July. Thanks for joining us here today, and we hope you'll join us right back here tomorrow as we continue this epic. Until then, goodnight from the Rio!

Looks like a lot of players waited too long to enter the Main Event. Today is the last day of the Day 1's and the Rio ran out of space for all the players that wanted to play. Guess they were turning away players. This from CardPlayer about it:

The decision left hundreds of players shocked, confused, and angry. Several well-known players were reportedly unable to register on Day 1D, including Patrik Antonius, T.J. Cloutier, Layne Flack, Ted Forrest, Brandon Adams, Richard ?chufty? Ashby, and ?Hollywood? Dave Stann.

Huck Seed, the 1996 world champ, almost didn?t get to play the main event. Despite winning the NBC National Heads-Up Championship this year ? and thus automatically earning a seat in the 2009 main event ? Seed was left on the rail early on in Day 1D. But Jack Effel, WSOP tournament director, said that Seed was eventually seated because ?we had to honor that commitment,? mentioning that there was trouble with the wire transfer from Caesars.

Despite rumors floating around that Antonius eventually got a seat, Effel said at 4 p.m. that he ?didn?t make it in.? An official entry list for Day 1D will not be available until tonight."
