What the hell is this shit Iam learning. If capping was a major I would be the mutha fuqin Dean.....but The Chaos Thoery?!?! I dont even knwo what Iam learning...hell all of students in that class had a meeting today and we are lost as fawk!!! We badly need some help with this....BADLY

Heres the Question

A car milometre reads 595 miles. This number is an example of a palinfrome - it reads the same backwards as forwards. After two hours driving (within the speed limit) the milometer showed the next palindrome. What was the average speed of the car?
Sometime later, the number on the milometer read the same when viewed upside down. How long (to the nearest minute) did it take for the first 'upside down' to appear? (the car continued to travel at the same average speed).
Explain clearly how you arrive at your solution please.

the next palinfrome would be 606, so the car is going 5.5 miles per hour (606-595= 11 / 2 hrs= 5.5)

the first number that would look the same upside down would be 888

so the time would be 888-606 = 282 / 5.5 mph = 51.27 hrs

to calculate minutes (.27 / 100) x 60 = 16 minutes

total elapsed time 51 hrs 16 minutes

just a guess...

No offense to Hellah, but you shouldn't do his homework, and that's not chaos theory.

To boot, there's a mistake in S-Love's reply, but I won't say what it is. Maybe it was intentional?

After 606 the first number that can be read upside down the same would be 609.

Assuming you are traveling at the same speed 5.5 mph = .0917 miles per minute. Three miles to the next "upside down" - 3/.0917 - 32.7 or 33 minutes.

sounds to me like the only "chaos theory" that is going on in that class is in the professor's brain.

Give him a slap on the ass and tell him to start teaching you real college material instead of the 7th grade story problem he just gave you. You're paying hard earned money for this class.

your good at pointing out mistakes there Shrimp. I think that you should state what the mistake is. S-Love's calculations appear correct to me and my friend the quantum physisist.

So Cal
"Chaos Theory", I thought dealt primarliy with non-linear functions, supposedly incomprehensible to many of us because we can only understand linear functions. Don't really see how this applies to assignment, but not a math teacher and this must definitely be "new" math.

The mistake was pointed out in ace's post. I thought it might be more helpful to Hellah than just stating it. In the name of full disclosure, I realized that 888 was not the NEXT number that read the same upside down, but I kind of skipped over 609 myself. So I'm glad I didn't call him out and then post my answer.

Hellah -- didn't mean to imply he was "doing your homework". Well, maybe I did, but I know it was just one problem. Good luck with your class.
