I have often wondered the same thing about Morgan Freeman. He's way too good to take some of the crap roles he has.

It's easy to explain. The budget of the movie may be 15 million. They give 10 of it to Freeman or Deniro. They also alter the film schedule so that Freeman or Deniro only work for a week or two.
