Yes, I lost my bet. WHY foul with 3 seconds left, down 6 points. I can’t even say I’m asking for a friend! Ha. I’m genuinely curious. Could someone with coaching knowledge explain what good can possibly come from that? Of course I lost my bet by .5……but above that I’m curious. Do they get coached to do that? Wyoming is 12-12 in the season so it wouldn’t surprise me. I don’t see successful programs doing that, with more time left and a closer game! Why?

Let me let you in on a dirty little secret. On rare occasion, these guys actually don't do what they are taught to do. I know that's hard to understand, given the superior mental capacity of these scholar athletes, but from time to time it actually happens.

Did they follow with a time out? Yep, drives me insane.

This has happen to me on a couple of occasions this season. Just happened, I believe, twice last week that cost me the cover. Not sure if they get caught up in the end of the game mindset, if it’s Vegas, but I have seen a decent amount of fouling in the final seconds of games that teams have no chance to win.

I think many coaches ask their asst coach who is in charge of time out counts Will ask the asst " how many time outs do I have"? And when the head coach hears 1 or more might just call a time out. When your down a 4-5 pts and really a time out isn't going to get you a 5 pt play. What is a no-no is when your up 5 and a few seconds left and you have the ball and call a time out. Many coaches feel your rubbing it in. But a coach can tell the official I want a time out to sub only Now that is HS rules. Not sure about NCAA rules But think its the same. In all my years in coaching I never emptied a bench with a few seconds left so every body can say they played and are in the book At my school which had all minority players it would be considered a " diss" . And the next day in school someone would remark " hey Leroy heard you got to play 4 seconds" It was better not to play at all then a few seconds . I had one kid in my career who was 5'1 and built like a bowling ball He was a sp ed player and could do one thing Hit a 25 ft set shots lefty. Many times my home crowd would start the chant at the end of the game " we want Tarrots " I had to put him in with enough time on the clock so he could shoot his set shot. There were many times in a tied game vs a really good team with 20 seconds left ' the Student body would start the chant " we want tarrots " They did it so they could see my reaction to the crowd . I had to talk to our student council about that because it made Tarrots have a false sense that he might go in But he could hit a set shot from 25 feet out He couldn't dribble or pass but that kid could shoot and hit swishes. We played a team in our conference that packed a zone in. I put Tony T in and he hit 3 shots . He scored his season high 8 pts. And this was before the 3 pt line was in.
I had his twin brothers in class and a few years ago on facebook they contacted me. Tony T is now a friend on facebook with me. I asked him if he can shoot and he said yes.. Crazy story

Sometimes I think players, especially subs, foul when it doesn’t matter just to get another opportunity to handle the ball and maybe score a basket.
