Akron Zips -7 over Iona
Zips lyr beat Iona by 3 in New Rochelle. They have lost a few in a row.And it's becuse of defense. They have Tarver who led the nation in Juco's lyr in scoring. He had 31 the other nite and avg's 21 pts a game.Throw in another juco transfer in Hollingworth. He is a solid pt gd that can score[18 avg]and pass.Lyr frosh star Peterson is avg.13 pts a game.Hipsher is a 6'8 gd-fd that can score and play defense. In fact he might be the only player who really plays defense.
Iona got "hosed" the other nite vs Fairfield.Leading by 1 with .08 on the clock the Stag timekeeper fell asleep. On an inbounds under the basket they let a Stag player catch it,pump fake, pivot and shoot. On the shot he was fouled. They allowed it and he hit one to send the game into OT.
But 15 minits into that game Jenkins hurt his shoulder. So Iona was w/o its top rebounder and 2nd leading scorer most of the game.Jenkins is there only real post player. And he will miss the next 3 or 4 games. That is a big loss.He is there only inside presence. They are loaded at gd with Smith,Burtt,Woffard,McCullough, and Fields.Fields is a 6'8 2 or 3.He will moved to the 4 or 5 tonite.
But Iona is not a good defensive team either. So both teams are suspect in that.Iona turns it over a lot more and on the road I see them having trouble with that.
This is a small play because the Zips shouldn't be giving 7 pts to many teams.Esp. one that could be undefeated if it weren't for a timekeeper.
Akron should control the bds tonite since Iona could be playing with 4 gds and 1 foward.
Niagara +4 over Buffalo- Purple can't shoot. But Witherspoon loves that uptempo style. He misses Darcel Williams big time. When he coached at Erie CC they were the UNLV of juco's.I swear those teams he had are better then his team now.I would take the +4 and the Purple.Darden and Mendez can play and could win this outright. In there last 3 games the margin of pts have been under 4.Purple won lyr 63-62,and 80-76 and 105-103 the yrs before.Mihalich is nuts.He will have them doing suicide drills in the snow until they can make a jumper.
Lost on Nova last nite.Penn defense just overwhelmed them.Lost on Conn too.I still cannot believe 9 pts in the 1st half.
Cuse won big and Fairfield won outright over Marist.I could see that coming. No depth for the Red Foxes. They were physically tired from Ga Tech. And last nite Ellerbee hurt his ankle and didn't play in the strecth run as the Stags stormed back in the last 8 minuts.
Cen Mich comes to Marist on Sat.Magarity has 6 scholarship players suited up for that game.Rumor has it Dave is going to watch intramurals this afternoon and see if anyone wants to dress up for the layup line on Sat
And finally I was right on TCU yest.I hated going against my North Texas but my numbers had TCU winning.I had already blown the Weber St last week. But feel somewhat vindicated. If I had lost again going against the Mean green I would of scrapped off my "mean green" sticker off my car window.
Not a big nite.
