E. Steward's viewpoint

E. Steward's viewpoint

from a column by Thomas Hauser....

(Lewis) ?Bite on the leg; bite on the leg. That changed everything. Up until that, Mike Tyson was just another guy I was going to fight. Now I feel like anyone beating him would be a victory for decency in boxing. Tyson talks about being a victim, but anyone could say that. I could say that. I never grew up in a nice place, a nice world, but look how I turned out. Tyson can choose how he turns out. He's got to stop using his background as an excuse. It's such a silly excuse because, when you look at it, it doesn't mean anything; especially to me. I'm tired of Tyson's talk, of the attention he gets for simply being someone who can't take any control of his life. I'll be glad to see him coming into the ring because that's where it gets hard, where whatever you say doesn't mean a thing and you have to be honest and just fight.?

The architect of Lewis's fight plan will be trainer Emanuel Steward, who has been with the champion for sixteen fights. Steward projects an aura of confidence when talking about Lewis-Tyson.

?When you fight Tyson,? says Steward, ?you have to be assertive. You cannot fight a cautious fight. Tyson is used to fighting people who run from him. This time, he'll be fighting someone who wants to knock him out; who is going to be aggressive in a certain way. It could be a very exciting fight early because, even though Lennox has a great advantage technically and physically, he's liable to get excited and end up going toe-to-toe to try to knock Tyson out. It could end up being a slugfest. Tyson might land a few blows, but it won't be enough to hold Lennox off.?

?Lennox isn't afraid of Mike, and Mike knows it,? Steward continues. ?I've watched Tyson. He's always had this thing about Lennox where Lennox intimidates him a lot. Mike has admitted that. In fact, he's continually making comments about Lennox intimidating him and picking on him. That's a role that Mike isn't used to. That, plus the fact that Mike doesn't want to fight Lennox, has him in a terrible state of mind. Tyson doesn't want to be at this fight. You can see that in the man?s face when he speaks. And Lennox has no fear of Tyson. Lennox almost laughs at Mike Tyson. He's going to knock Tyson out. I don't think the fight will go four rounds. It will be a total mismatch after the first 45 seconds or so.?

emanuel steward is smart

emanuel steward is smart

but, remeber,he`s not objective...he is lewis` trainer.....the same argument could be made about tua.most who fight cautiously against him get k.o.`ed...but,lewis,who is 6`5" and can box and punch doesn`t have to exchange unless he wants to...he`d be foolish to be to macho.....he outboxed tua for 12 rounds in a boring but lopsided decision...tyson can`t stand being humiliated and will leave himself wide open in desperate attempts to k.o. lewis... ...tyson can`t outbox lewis...lewis should be assertive, but also be patient....mike doesn`t understand the concept of wearing a guy down in the ring anymore...if lennox exchanges to much,he may k.o. mike,or get k.o`ed himself...not the greatest set of whiskers.

Tyson-Lewis fight props released
June 6, 2002

Lennox Lewis is a $2.20 favorite for Saturday's fight.(AP)

By Barry Daniels
VegasInsider.com Managing Editor

Most of the general public money is appearing on Mike Tyson, while a majority of professional bettors are wagering on Lennox Lewis.

At least that's how Las Vegas Sports Consultants oddsmaker Tony Sinisi sees the betting going for this Saturday's heavyweight showdown in Memphis, Tenn.

"We are definitely seeing the 'square' money on Tyson at plus $1.80, while most of the 'wise' guys are laying $2.20 with Lewis," reported Sinisi. "We opened Lewis at minus $2.40, and I expect the price to settle in at about $2.00.

"The sports books are telling us that for every one bet on Lewis, there are 10 bets being placed on Tyson. But keep in mind that the majority of those 10 bets are of the small variety (under $100), while the big bets are more than $1,000."

LVSC also opened the round 'prop' with the 'doesn't-go' past the 1 1/2-minute mark of the seventh round being the $1.30 favorite and the 'does-go' a $1.15 underdog.

The 'doesn't-go' has since moved to minus $1.35.

"If Tyson has any chance to win this fight, it will have to be in the early rounds," offered Sinisi. "I don't see him winning a 12-round decision.

"The first few rounds will be critical to Lewis. If he can withstand the storm early, he could win easily. It would be hard to imagine Lewis being able to take too much punishment because he just doesn't take a punch well.

"We made Lewis the favorite because he is close to the peak of his career and is fighting a man whose best days were spent in jail."

Those who disagree with Sinisi can get 6/1 that Tyson will win by decision and 20/1 that the fight will end in a 12-round draw. The former champ is 2/1 to win by a knockout (including a TKO).

Lennox Lewis is 9/5 to win by decision and 7/5 to win by a knockout.

Some other interesting proposition bets being offered on this bout appear below.

Will the fight go 3 full rounds?
Yes - Minus $1.80
No - Plus $1.50

Will the fight go 5 full rounds?
Yes - Minus $1.10
No - Minus $1.20

Will the fight go 11 full rounds?
Yes - Plus $1.60
No - Minus $2.00

Lewis to be knocked down 1 1/2 times
Over - Plus $1.65
Under - Minus $1.85

Tyson to be knocked down 1 ? times
Over - Plus $1.45
Under- Minus $1.65

Finally made a play

Finally made a play

Tyson by KO : 1 unit to win 2.

I don't love it, but I wanted to get something down on this fight, and that's probably the best value I found.

My prediction is Lewis by KO but the price is not right on that. I think there's a good enough chance, though, that Tyson gets one to make the 2-1 wager.

Nothing to add about the fight. I've said enough about here at jacks. Here's to hoping its a good fight.

olympic has a nice prop up.......lewis-no points deducted at even money....can`t remember seeing lewis have points deducted in a fight...only scenario`s would be an additional punch after a knock down or if the bout gets out of hand and simultaneous fouls are assessed...6`5" eddie cotton has been instructed to keep things under control....i think lennox would have a hard time hitting mike low......i like this prop a lot at even money.

I'm hoping for a little beginner's luck here by posting my first pick. I am looking for this fight to be long & boring. I am looking for Lewis to pick his spots and stand back and jab all night long. I think this fight will be reminiscent of the Lewis/Tua fight . I think it goes the distance w/ Lewis keeping the belts. I'll take....

Lewis -200 for 1unit

and a prop bet that the fight goes a full 11 rounds +300 for 1unit

GLTA :p

Lewis unless FIXED!

Lewis unless FIXED!

I layed 5 units on Lewis like I said I would but the more I think about it ... the more I am worried that this fight could be fixed for Tyson to win in an upset. Here are my reasons:

#1 Most reasonable people including the experts think Lewis will win so I assume much more money will be coming in on Lewis in the end.

#2 If Tyson loses and looks bad, his career is OVER and there are not many marketable fighters these days especially heavyweights.

#3 Therefore, if Tyson loses, there are no big fights that people will pay to see. This fight did not sell well and PPV sales are also far below what promoters, etc... were hoping for. So, for $$$ reason... if Tyson wins impressively or it is at least a decent fight to watch... they hype for a rematch would be huge and likely sell a lot of tickets and PPV.

#4 Although I doubt Lewis would take a fall, he is making I believe about $20 million for this fight and would make at least that for a big time hyped up highly anticipated rematch. He is 37 and could lose this fight and then win the rematch for huge money and retire rich as hell and with the titles and revenge for a 3rd time after losing initially.

I will be watching closely to see if anything looks fishy if Tyson wins. I know Lewis does not have the best jaw, so a good shot could put him away much like his other 2 losses but if that happens, it better be a legitimate looking shot that gets him or I'll be F**KIN' PISSED!

Anyway, I am ny no means no boxing expert but this is my rambling opinion.

I like Tyson in this match to win. He will come out aggressive, and take the early rounds. I also think if the match goes over 6 rounds, Lewis would win though, but my money is on Tyson

Tyson +180 500/900

Tyson by KO +200 100/200

The arguement that I have regarding the prospect of Lewis taking a dive in this fight is...........why? Lewis has more loot than he knows what to do with. Lewis is the epitome of pride and quite frankly I don't think he could have been bought for ANY amount of money.

an old fashioned ass-whipping

an old fashioned ass-whipping

as i said in a thread last week, mike no longer knows how to break down a fighter...he doesn`t usually throw more than one punch and doesn`t bob and weave at all...not the same mike tyson...he needs structure and instruction and hasn`t had that since cus d`amato and kevin rooney....i will say that mike took it like a man.....but,his days as a dominant heavyweight are long gone.....lewis should retire here and they should set-up a nice little hvywt tourney.
