Eddie Murphy May Have Ruined Chances for Oscar: Arkin, Haley Great Odds

In the world of Oscar betting, "Best Supporting Actor" is certainly up for grabs this year.

MediaNews movie critics Barry Caine of ANG Newspapers and Mary F. Pols of the Contra Costa Times Sunday commented on how Showgirls star, Eddie Murphy, may have spoiled his chances for an Oscar with his offensive follow up role in Norbit.

"There's a lot of buzz out there about Eddie Murphy spoiling his own chances of winning the best supporting actor award for Dreamgirls," commented Mary F. Pols. "People are saying that "Norbit," with all its mean fat jokes, is so offensive, it might turn off some Academy voters. I thought Eddie was merely fine in "Dreamgirls" anyway, but still, talk about terrible timing. Here's Eddie, reveling in this old-fashioned prejudice just as the rest of the world is embracing full-figured women. His size 14 "Dreamgirls" co-star, Jennifer Hudson, is going to be on the cover of the March Vogue!"

"I think Murphy does what Murphy wants," said Caine. "His taste -- remember "The Klumps" -- is generally south of sensitive. But if he makes them, people will come. He was one of the favorites for supporting actor, but I also think "Norbit" takes its toll on undecided minds, lowering his chances and lifting Alan Arkin's. Jackie Earle Haley deserves it; how could anyone who saw "Little Children" think otherwise? But his playing an accused sex offender will turn off many voters; great performance, difficult to watch. Like Martin Scorsese, Arkin's been around, been nominated twice before, is the rock that carries "Little Miss Sunshine," the crowd favorite, and this could be his last hurrah."

Murphy played soul singer James "Thunder" Early in Showgirls, winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award in that category.

Several reviews for the film highlighted Murphy's performance while he received some pre-release Academy Awards buzz.

Murphy may be forgiven however due to his long standing as a sometimes "offensive" adult comedian while at the same time having the ability to appeal to our youthful side with child-friendly portrayals of a donkey in Trek and Dr. Dolittle. His comeback in recent years can't hurt his Oscar chances either.

Bookmakers originally had Murphy as a -300 favorite to win for "Best Supporting Actor". betED.com (see website here) later revised his odds to -700 (meaning you would have to bet US$7 to win US$1 plus your initial US$7 or a US$1 profit for every US$7 wagered).

Alan Arkin was listed with even odds at betED.com (bet $1, win $1). Jackie Earle Haley had +600 odds. Djimon Hounsou +700. Mark Wahlberg had odds of +2500
