Terrible tragedy.
My brother lives in Sendai, Japan... the closest city to the epicenter of the earthquake. His place is about 6-7 miles from that airport surrounded and flooded by water they kept showing on CNN.
Was rough watching it all unfold the first several hours without knowing if he was ok. With no way of contacting him it was just a matter of waiting and not freaking out too much. I wasn't quite sure exactly what part of Sendai he lived in so I was staring at a map trying to figure out how far into the city the tsunami had penetrated.
Anyhow, he finally was able to borrow his neighbors cell phone and get through to my mom about 7am Pacific Time. Safe and sound, high and dry. Water didn't reach as far inland as his neighborhood, and the earthquake wrecked everything inside his place, but so far seems like superficial structural damage.
He indicated the San Francisco 7.1 in 1989 doesn't hold a candle to this quake, but the thing that is most terrifying to me is the quake in '89 lasted 15 seconds... this one laste 2+ minutes.
Obviously still a bit worried about his situation, not sure how accessible food and water will be the coming week, but the immediate danger is over, so that is good news.
g.l. to your brother,imf......let us know how things go....:mj09:
