Hi Guys,

Here goes for Round 6 of the AFL. The odds I have listed are the standard odds on offer with most books although as always there are variations if you shop around.

KANGAROOS $3.00 (+21.5) VS RICHMOND $1.35 (-21.5)
COLONIAL STADIUM FRI 7.40PM AEST

Richmond scored a nice away win against the West Coast last week while the Kangaroos lost to an improving Adelaide side. Richmond should take care of the Kangaroos who are missing Wayne Carey due to suspension. I favour Richmond to cover the spread but not enough to be confident.

ST KILDA $2.05 (+5.5) VS SYDNEY $1.75 (-5.5)
COLONIAL STADIUM SAT 2.10PM AEST

St Kilda have impressed me in patches this year and they pushed Carlton for most of last weeks game. I think coach Malcolm Blight nearly has his combinations right and St Kilda are not far off putting everything together. Sydney started the year 3-0 but only against Adelaide West Coast and Kangaroos. They were then hammered by Essendon and were brave in defeat against Melbourne. Sydney are again affected by injuries which makes it even harder for them to win away from home. Also interesting to note last year Sydney were 3-0 before losing 5 in a row.

Playing St Kilda +5.5

FREMANTLE $2.20 (+8.5) VS MELBOURNE $1.65 (-8.5)
SUBIACO SAT 7.40PM AEST

I have no doubt that Melbourne are the better side here and they will be confident following their defeat of Sydney. Fremantle looked good for 85% of last weeks game and had Brisbane in real trouble at the GABBA before that bizarre last 15 mins where Brisbane were kicking a goal nearly every minute. I don?t like betting against Fremantle at Subiaco unless I am really keen on the other side, and I don?t rate Melbourne a top side just yet. I think there are better games for betting this week.

PORT ADELAIDE $1.22 (-27.5) VS WSTN BULLDOGS $4.00 (+27.5)
FOOTBALL PARK SAT 7.40PM AEST

I like the look of Port Adelaide this year. They won the Ansett Cup impressively. They are 4-1 for the year. Their only loss was against Essendon where they showed some fight in the final quarter and last week they were way too good for Geelong. But I don?t think there is any value in backing them at $1.22 or ?27.5 against a solid Wstn Bulldogs outfit. I am not prepared to bet against Port Adelaide in this one either but I can understand if others see good value in backing Wstn Bulldogs at the spread.

BRISBANE $1.33 (-23.5) vs GEELONG $3.25 (+23.5)
GABBA SAT 7.40PM AEST

Brisbane have not exactly been on fire this year but they are a talented side. I think the final quarter blitz against Fremantle last week will give them plenty of momentum to carry into this game. Geelong have lost there last 3 matches and have looked fairly ordinary. Brisbane at home are capable of racking up big scores and I think they will easily account for Geelong who are making their first trip away from Melbourne for the year.

Playing Brisbane ?23.5

ESSENDON $1.10 (-42.5) VS WEST COAST $7.00 (+42.5)
COLONIAL STADIUM SUN 2.10PM AEST

The best side in the competition will hammer possibly the worst side. West Coast have lost Scott Cummings and in desperation will make some positional changes this week. Bottom line is they just can?t match up with Essendon who still have a point to prove after what has been considered a mixed start to the season. I was expecting around ?47.5 for Essendon so I am pleasantly surprised by the line of offer.

Playing Essendon -42.5

HAWTHORN $1.30 (-23.5) VS ADELAIDE $3.50 (+23.5)
YORK PARK SUN 2.10PM AEST

Every week I keep repeating how good I think Hawthorn are and every week they keep getting the cash for me. They are the only undefeated side remaining in the AFL and I do think they will beat Adelaide. I would not be at all surprised if Hawthorn cover the spread easily but I am not confident backing them at ?23.5 when Adelaide are starting to come into solid form. Adelaide have beaten Carlton and Kangaroos in the past fortnight.

COLLINGWOOD $2.10 (+5.5) VS CARLTON $1.70 (-5.5)
MCG SUN 2.15PM AEST

One of the biggest grudge matches in the AFL and can produce some unpredictable results. Bookies seem to have this one about right with Carlton slight favourites. If Carlton blow out to $1.80 or $1.85 I would consider backing them but no bets on this one at the moment. Will have another look on Sunday.

SUMMARY OF PLAYS

St Kilda +5.5
Brisbane -23.5
Essendon ?42.5

Good luck to everyone !!!!

All the best with those; I'll chime in tomorrow with my guesses - don't like much in the Super 12 so it may be my quietest weekend for a while. Fancy a few AFL dogs tho'

round 6 selections
Record so far 7-7

Richmond (-21.5) vs kangaroos
pick richmond -21.5
Although the kangaroos are improving they still rely on to few each week.I see in the ruck a key area were Richmond should dominate with Ottens,Gale & Hall all playing good football. For the kangaroos to win Mckernan and Burton will need to play at the their best to give stevens and co first use of the ball, but mckernan is way out of sorts and lynsay Smith from the reserves may get a run wich may force Spider Burton or even Mckernan to miss after he and Pagan had a long chat on Monday at training. With no Carey kangaroos usually struggle,Richmond to get the points and make a statement that they have arrived as a geniune force.

St.Kilda vs Sydney
No pick
I feel Sydney should win this one but still carrying to many injuries,Nicks a key player is rumored to miss and Stafford only a 50/50 again,Colonial holds no fears for sydney and St.kilda will miss harvey again but loewe plays game 300 so for this reason it is a no pick from me.

Fremantle vs Melborne
No pick
Melbourne should win and cover spread but don't like picking melbourne without farmer, will leave this alone

Port vs Bulldogs
No pick
Port will win but maybe spread is to big ,I will leave this one alone

Brisbane(-23.5) vs Geelong
Pick Geelong -23.5
With Geelong loosing Scarlett to suspension I expect Brisbane to cover this line especially if geelongs midfield continues to struggle.I feel Geelongs forward line is to tall and slow especially with Snell missing and Ronnie Burns not getting much of the ball at present, to one dimensional for my liking

Collingwood Vs Carlton
No pick
I like Collingwood in this one and may have a dabble at collingwood to win by under 24.5
which is paying $4.00 at centrebet

Essendon -43.5 vs West Coast
pick essendon -43.5
West Coast will struggle to win another game in Melbourne this year and matching a rested up Essendon it could and should get ugly

Hawthorn(-24.5) vs Adeliade
Pick Hawthorn -24.5
This would be my strongest pick of the week i feel the only area Adeliade can match Hawthorn is in the midfield but they will miss the injury prone duo of Johnson and Vardy and Holland back for Hawthorn spells trouble for Adeliade

Good luck to all for this round

Should have anticipated that one, but it still didn't thrill me much this game.

Any thoughts on the Richmond v Kang match up?

I see the Kangz getting rolled here. They have been pound in almost every game by teams equal or slightly below Richmond.

Looking hard at the ML -250 The spread -20 spread looks like a very good play, but the ML looks like a gift. Looks almost too good, but I have seen many of those go bad.

I just don't think the Kang have enough offense.

I personally can't see the Roo's get much closer than say 40 points !

Average game score Roo's = 63 pts
Average game score Richm = 102 pts

Roo's at Home 0-2 ATS
Richm Away 3-0 ATS

Home teams have not fared well ATS this season 14-26

well, think if anyone gets massacred, probably North, but still got this nagging feeling...

possibly this Richmond team has a little more steel to it than others, but still have not decided on this

not sure I can stomatch the handicap though, and might look for a small ML wager, think I might even go to the game, have a look

I feel the same way as Aussie Vamp.

Richmond should win and logically should cover the spread. But I also have a nagging doubt about backing Richmond giving away this many points.

Probably no bets for me on this one and will save my cash for the 3 plays I listed yesterday.

The Tigers win

final score Richmond 129 Kangaroos 78
Richmond held sway most of the night and i felt that the roos put up pretty good fight until the last quarter,Kangaroos were kept in the game for awhile because Richmond missed alot of easy chances.McKernan ithink went without a possesion for the hole game (I think the magoos are calling).Must be a worrying sign for Pagan that the kangaroos continue to get rolled in the last qtr it seems a finals chance is nearly all but over.Expect the roos to play more youngsters in the following weeks Petrie looked really good in the ruck in the first half and corey jones looks a prospect up forward.
Great calls zigzag and whale.Whale your call on Richmond to win by 40+ was spot on,look forward to reading your thoughts for the rest of the round

Yeah, the 'keeping it close' was what I was worried about, don't like betting footy handicaps when that might happen. Power rating too wasn't suggesting it.

Happened twice now (and did not bet Freo last week)

Did take Richmond small to win as suggested, so that is ok.

McKernan is dumber than the proverbial box of, part of his problem. When I was doing the hardcore stats thing even wrote an article in the paper about his atrocious hitout percentage, was the worst in the league, that was a couple of years ago.

Yeah, has to go with the nonames I guess.

Wonder what they will be in to for the wooden spoon now? It was 15/1 or so a couple of weeks ago.

In the end I Just went with the ML -250 on the Richmond game. Huge time zone difference so I didn't get to read the posts until after the match in the morning.

It all worked out as Richmond rolled and we got the win ML or spread.

Looking hard at the Hawthorne -24.5 Any thoughts on this one? Taking any help.
If not on the spread I Was thinking maybe a parlay Hawthorne - 350 ML with something else. Maybe a pass, still looking.

Adelaide has been pound a couple of times and was fairly close with the Kangz.

Another nice weekend on the AFL to date with St Kilda and Brisbane doing the job easily. Fingers crossed Essendon can make it a clean sweep.

One thing I have noticed this year (more than in previous seasons) is how one team often seems to really dominate the 4th quarter. What appears to be a close match can easily turn into a 40+ win.

Zig Zag,

In regards to Hawthorn today I think they are a very strong side and should beat Adelaide today. The concern I have is that now they are 5-0 for the season, the value on offer of Hawthorn is starting to disappear. I won't be betting on this one myself but good luck if you decide to get on.

Sundays results:

Collingwood 103 bt Carlton 95
Essendon 158 bt West Coast 70
smile.gif

Hawthorn 104 bt Adelaide 91

Essendon do the job easily to make it a 3-0 weekend. I have not been keeping track of all the AFL plays I have been posting in recent weeks but looking back on my bets I am currently 17-4 for the year. Just hope the good run can continue a bit longer.
