I was having a conversation with my mother in a law a while back. I wouldn't say she's a feminist but she's damn close. Basically women are always being put down and not respected enough. She told me a story about her first sales job.(She was an NP before and moved in to medical sales) She had a really good quarter her first quarter and was in line to make a pretty good bonus. But her sales manager ended up giving his lead rep all of the credit for the sales. She told him they were hers and showed proof but he didn't change it. She ended up having to really fight and claw to get it switched. She told me that she was always angry with her boss after that because he didn't respect women and was a male chauvinist.
I then told her about my job out of college. I was an outside sales rep for a company and a similar situation happened to me. The difference was that I never once thought it was because I was a white male. I knew why it happened. I was a rookie and a high % of the times rookies didn't make it. One of the ways the sales manager kept his top sales rep happy was to give him extra sales here and there. Knowing it wouldn't matter to the rookie because they would be gone but it helped him keep his top guy. She got angry and said that wasn't the case with her and it couldn't have happened just because it was the first sales job she had every had after 20+ years in nursing.
I tell this story because it reminds me of situations where a cop kills someone. In the Brown case people say he didn't get indicted because the slain man was black. IMO it was because he was fighting a cop, f'd up but I also think it's because cops RARELY get indicted for killing someone. Whether they be white, black or any color.
I do think there is racism in our country. I also think there are cops that probably have killed because of someone's skin color. But I honestly believe that if this would have been a white kid doing the same thing, the same results would have occurred. The difference is we wouldn't know about it.
