Was really hoping someone would do this; I was keen but believed I didn't have the time to truly dedicate myself to personally 'cap 3 sports while also doing some baseball work/coat-tailing,
I LOVE AFL; lived in North Carlton for a year in 1990 and became a die-hard Blues fan - Silvagni still playing too! We get good TV coverage over here.
Gloveski, all the best mate, really looking 4ward to your tips.

I'm not the world's greatest capper but if think there's a genuine value AFL play i'll chuck it in the ring too.

Carn the Roos!!!

btw Anders, I reckon North Carlton is a great part of a great city. I usually stay with friends at Park Street -- a short walk from the world's best ice cream 'The Gellatti Bar'? Lygon Street near Brunswick road i think it is.

WOW
eek.gif

Used to go there alright - 10 years ago now. How could you not go to Lygon St?? I lived in Drummond St, just 20 seconds around the corner - think there was a decent-sized murder there a few years back - wasn't me
biggrin.gif

Still have the 12 inch telly I bought in Brunswick, and the Juventus and AC Milan shirts I bought in Lygon St.
I used to work for Brashs in the big store in Collins St; still have rellys in Melbourne, wonderful city; probably the greatest sporting city in the world

Where u live Fred?

I live near the home of the 'green machine'.

I agree Melbourne is way cool, if it wasn't for friends and family i reckon i might live there (love FNQ and Perth too).

Was in NZ a short while back, didn't check out Hamilton but departed from the airport there.

I might move to NZ if John Howard and his band of church ladies ever have their way.

btw, do you know 'turtle', NZ 'capper extraordinaire?

well stay tuned most likely only a few selections each weekend, hopefully i will not give any one a bum steer. Not happy with the the roosters in the nrl had a multibet with detroit in the nhl. Some people were talking that they would not loose another game all year, thought it was a certainty.anyway Anders if you are a centrebet user i will list my picks for "matchwinners" for the afl if you are interested (goes on two players head to head for possesions)

Yep, C/bet has been a regular out, their odds they fax each Tues has just landed on my desk as I type.
I was going to post a hedge play on the Panthers/under 47pts but was too exhausted and didn't even play it myself - kicked myself all nite

Fred, checking out at Hamilton is probably the best thing to do
biggrin.gif
Not my choice of home, came with the job, but it ain't bad either. Don't know Turtle, being a relative MJs newcomer, but saw his name in the golf contest.

OK Fellas.

The time has come to have a dig at the AFL. Here is my thoughts on Round 2. I am always wary early in the season but there is some value this week in my opinion.

Essendon vs Port Adelaide FRI 7.40PM AEST

Essendon were the best side by a country mile last year and early signs are they are going to carry on where they left off. They have talent coming out their ears and can cover injuries where other sides can't. They can rack up points very quickly and won by some huge margins last year. Essendon should cover the spread (-40 pts).

Carlton vs Hawthorn SAT 2.10PM AEST

I'm going for an upset and backing Hawthorn to win paying $2.35 (or +11.5 pts) with Darwin All Sports. Carlton scraped home last week by one point but the long flight to Fremantle can often take its toll on sides the following week. Hawthorn didn't look great in beating Collingwood last week but they have a team that could make the Top 4 this year in my opinion. The gap left by Paul Salmon has been well filled by Shaun Rehn who is looking solid so far.

Richmond vs Wstn Bulldogs SAT 2.10PM AEST

I think this game is fairly evenly poised which makes the Wstn Bulldogs good value at $2.35 (or +11.5 pts). They are a side usually known for their toughness and agression which let them down last week in a close loss. They are pumped up for a big showing and Scotty West never plays badly 2 weeks in a row. Richmond do look ok at the moment as well and it should be an interesting game.

Collingwood vs Fremantle SAT 7.00PM AEST

Two fairly average sides in what looks like a fairly average match. Favour Collingwood but they are no value at $1.45 so I will leave this game alone.

Adelaide vs Melbourne SAT 7.40PM AEST

Adelaide won a couple of premierships in the late 90's but have not done much since then. I expect them to finish down in the bottom few at the end of the season. Melbourne surprisingly made last years Grand Final and probably deserve to start slight favourites here in my opinion. The bookies can't split this one and I won't be betting on this game.

Brisbane vs Kangaroos SUN 2.10PM AEST

Brisbane are a side that looks ready to make a Grand Final but never seems to deliver. But at home they will beat the Kangaroos. Only paying $1.25 (or -28 pts) and can't see any great value.

St Kilda vs Geelong SUN 2.10PM AEST

This game is an even matchup. St Kilda look like a different side with Blight taking over as coach. He has the ability to get something out of players that other coaches can't. Geelong looked good winning by a big margin last week and traditionally are a strong early season team. I favour St Kilda to win but at $1.80 they are only an average bet.

West Coast vs Sydney SUN 4.30PM AEST

West Coast are woeful at the moment but always are some hope at home. Sydney should win but can't back the $1.60 on offer.

SUMMARY OF PLAYS:

Essendon (-40) vs Port Adelaide
Hawthorn (+11.5 or $2.35) vs Carlton
Wstn Bulldogs (+11.5 or $2.35) vs Richmond

I am a Kiwi living in Aussie now and have followed the AFL closely for a few years. Look forward to everyone making some cash this year.

P.S. Know Turtle well (related to him).

Hey Cartman88

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I think the Bulldogs are the best value this week.

Was leaning to Port +40.5 but ya talked me out of it.

I'm playing the Bulldogs moneyline.

Good luck!

4 plays for me:

Essendon -40 in a laugher (1 unit)
Bulldogs +11.5 (2 units) and ML (1 unit)
Hawthorn +11.5 v my uncle's beloved Magpies

GLTA; hope I can get some NRL and Super 12 winners (see post)

3 picks this week
Carlton -8.5
Hard to beat at optus oval are the blue baggers only lost one game there last year if Carlton are going to have any say in the finals they will need to win games like this against quality opposition.Kouta and Silvagni should be good for the run & Carlton won this game last year by 50 plus points and have one somthing like 12 out of the last 13 games between the two sides.

Western Bulldogs +9.5
Every one is writing the Bulldogs of this year. They thumped richmond pre-season(don't read to much into this) & Scott West had a shocker last week and Chris Grant was only serviceable but still nearly beat the saints last week. These two players hold the key for the bullies. One area were they may struggle is to contain Richmonds height in the forward line so expect plenty of flooding.Having said that Richmond struggled to win back to back games last year and lost alot of games they were expected to win. Bulldogs should hold the line and at he M/L are good value.

Melbourne No Line
Melbourne have also been written off carrying a few injuries but no were near as many as Adeliade.Adeliade were ordinary last week and had no system whatsoever so expect melbourne to get the points in a skill ridden game. Also expecting farmer to play even though he was not named supposedly been seen doing extra runs around Melbourne.

G/L to all only small wagers this time of year.

Nasty backdoor on the Bombers - Bulldogs I think are a go against until proven otherwise, got some problems.

If Richmond coach is not a mirage - and it would seem not, they can take this one.

Easy wins by Hawthorn and Western Bulldogs both paying around 11/8 outright. Essendon just cost me a clean sweep. Had the spread fairly well covered but lost that killer instinct in the closing minutes.

Thanks for your picks gloveski.

I played Hawthorn as both a spread and money line bet. Won both ways.

Not a bad first attempt at placing bets on a sport I know absolutely nothing about!

Can you please tell me how Australian football differs from American football?

Thanks for letting me tag along for some money.

went to Carlton Hawthorn (and backed the Hawks +9.5 before I left)

Carlton have big structural problems without Hamill, not good - and older and slower than last year - also, nowhere near the intensity and tackling brilliance of last year.

Kouta not fully fit - whether he will return to his form, not sure.

Rawlings/Hay and company too good for Whitnall and anybody else (i.e. no-one) today.

However, Hawthorn still struggling to mount attacks due to lackadaisacal flanker types a lot, so unfortunately, although they have the big guys, still can't annoy Essendon I think.

Speaking of Essendon, Port took hellacious advantage of the absence of Hardwick, too, very clever - but still lost by what was 9 goals before that backdoor. Annoying stuff like that is why often just like picking favorites to win in footy, seeing deliberate conceding of scores can be a legitimate tactic.

Richmond still Richmond, the ferals would have been out there.

Melbourne freaky, too, thought that was a good thing, forgot to back it until I got back late and very short price on live betting, and they won pretty much on the siren after giving up a 9 goal lead? Daniher won't be happy.

As to the difference in the sports - footy is a disposal sport, gridiron a possession one derived from rugby.

AussieVamp,

I totally agree with your comments on Carlton. Not the same side as last year for all the reasons you mentioned.

They may have scraped home against Fremantle last week but Hawthorn really showed them up today. I think they will be a good team to bet against early in the season (or until they show some convincing form).

I think that Essendon are just too good again this year. I really rate Hawthorn though and think they are a team ready to make the Top 4 this year.

Season to date: 3-1; +2.90 units

Hell, better than my NRL picks
