Hi All,

Here we go with the first grand slam of the year.

I will begin with outright plays on the tournament.

Note: All odds will be in the European/Australian Format and are 1 unit unless specifed otherwise

Mens
Very tough to find a winner in the mens after the draw has so many of the chances in the top half of the draw. At the beginning of the year this would have been Hewitt all the way but after a bout of the chicken pox I don't see him having the fitness to go all the way. Agassi would have have beat both Sampras and Hewitt to make the final and therefore is not great value to win the tournament. The bottom half of the draw is lot more open with few major chances to make the final. The two players most likely players here are Grosjean and past winner Kafelnikov. Don't take too much notice of Grosjeans first round loss in the Syndey International as it was his first game of the year and he was playing Srichaphan who had just played in a tournamnet final. I have a leaning towards Grosjean and since he is the better value he is my play for the Australian Open.

Conclusion: Grosjean at $17 (Sportodds)

Womens
The womens winner seems to be a lot easier to pick with only V Williams, Capriati, Hingis, S Williams, Clistjers and Henin considered in contention with odds of 25/1 or greater for the rest. Immediately, you have to take out of the list Hingis as she hasn't be able to match with the Williams sisters yet and it now a full three years since a grand slam win. Next, I take out Clistjers and Henin. While both great players I can't see them featuring in the semi-finals. This leaves Capriati and the Williams Sisters. Capriati did nothing to inspire me in the lead up tournament. Now, the question which Williams sister do you pick. The better value is defintely in backing Serena at $7.50 but after she went over on her ankle Friday and has not been seen on court since you have to wonder if her ankle is more serious than thought. You could back Venus but at odds of $1.85 I'll sit back and watch.

Conclusion: No Bet

Day 1 Plays
Mens
Portas d Ilie 2.65
Its the 20th player in the world playing the 65th yet Ilie is a large favorite. While Ilie does love to play in fornt of his home crowd I do not htink the advantage is a great as the odds suggest.

Massu d Bjorkman 2.50
Massu took a set of Agassi in last year US Open and pushed a number of highly ranked players such as Grosjean late in the year and therefore I see him as good value to beat Bjorkman here

Other Plays:
Sargsian d Gonzales 1.95
Voltchkov d Mamiit 2.30

Womens
Dominikovic d Carlsson 1.72
Garbin d Irvin 1.80

Day 1 Results:
Mens 2-2 for 0.95 Units Gain
Womens 1-1 for 0.2 Unit Loss

Overall 3-3 for 0.75 Unit Gain

A small gain on day 1 with Portas defeating Ilie and Voltchkov winning. The withdrawal of Massu after one set against Bjorkman was a major disappointment.

Day 2 Plays
Mens
Costa d Mantilla 2.25
Ferreira d Gambill 2.10
Ulihrach d Ljubibic 2.00
Schalken d Kucera 1.90

Womens
There is one bet and it is a multiple. I am going against 4 Australians as hard as this to say being Australian we have no decent female tennis players at this point at time and all 4 should be easily accounted for as there is a 60-100 ranking places differences in each match.

Martinez d Watson
Njedely d Stewart
Sugiyama d McQuillan
Serna d Grahame
Odds: 4.83 for 2 Units

Good start Beastie Boy...

I thoroughly enjoyed day one :D

Wins to Boutter (from 2 sets down) and Blake along with the multi made for a fine day, only burgsmuller going down in 5 ruined a brilliant day.

Results: 6-4, +5.9 units.

More to come :drinky:

Ferreira +110 v Gambill

What an unlucky day, Anders (Although if you played Martin then you probably are only mildly annoyed at the other results). Apart from Ferreira winning easily all of your other individual games went 5 sets and you lost them all. Vacek and Labadze both led 2 sets to 0, Fukarek went down in 5 and Calleri left the court on a wheelchair due to a leg injury with scores at 2-2 in the fifth.

Ferreira was also an easy winner for me as was Costa who accounted for Mantilla. Would have been a OK day if either of the other two plays won but Schalken was soundly beaten and Ulihrach lost 9-7 in the fifth despite having a match point at 7-6 I think. I rather not say anything about the womens bet as 2 out of 4 of the aussies won and I lost the bet and in hindsight the bet was probably a stupid bet.

Day 2 Results
Mens: 2-2 for 0.35 Units Gain (+1.3 for Tournament)
Womens 0-1 for 2 Unit Loss (-2.2 for Tournament)

Overall: 2-3 for 1.65 Unit Loss (-0.9 for Tournament)

Day 3 plays
Mens
Portas d Hrbaty 2.60
Pless d Arazi 2.70
Philippoussis d Rusedski 1.60 (2 Units)

Multi: Blake/Dent/Grosjean 2.89

Womens
No Plays with all womens favorites at 1.50 or lower and no upsets that I can see.

:nooo: :(

Well, Beastie Boy's already explained my sob story so I won't drone on.... suffice to say what was looking like an exceptional day turned out to be very average...man

Played Martin for half a unit to cheer me up a little...

Results: 3-4, +1.37 units

Tournament to date: +7.27 units

Like all of Craig's plays today; be back in a while with what I've been told

Day 3 just didn't go my way with both Philippousis and Portas beaten in straight sets and Grosjean losing meaning a lost today on the multi and an loss an outright play on the tournament. I was relieved when Pless managed a victory.

Day 3 Results
Mens 1-3 for 2.3 unit loss (-1 unit for tournament)
Womens 0-0 (-2.2 units for tournament)

Overall: 1-3 for 2.3 Unit Loss (-4.2 Units for tournament including outright play)

Day 4 Plays
Mens
Ferreira d Nalbandian 1.67 (2 Units)
Ferreira displayed his skills with a three set victory over Gambill and should have the experience to account for Nalbandian here.

Schuttler d Moya 2.00
Moya made it through when Calleri retired with a leg injury in the fifth set while Schuttler won a tight five setter also. Wil be close but like Schuttler to account for Moya.

Multi: Costa/Escude/Roddick 2.27 (2 Units)

Womens
Muller d Pratt 2.60
Muller played well to defeat no. 27 seed Suarez in straight sets while Pratt needed 3 sets for her 1st round match.

Pisnik d Sugiyama 2.00
Pisnik won her 1st round match 9-7 in the third while Sugiyama struggled to defeat McQuillan, a player she should have beaten much easier.

Multi: Weingarter/Grande 2.10 (2 Units)

Anders, your sig is incredibly annoying. I have a 19" monitor and I still have to scroll nearly a full screen length to get past it. Have some compassion for those with smaller monitors and trim the size on it.

P.S.: You can put more than 3 words per line.

Day 4 was ruined with the withdrawal of Roddick and to top that a computer upgrade has left me without a computer as there is a problem with the motherboard I purchased and it is in to be looked until Monday or Tuesday. I reverted to the old computer and the keyboard failed to work making it impossible to do anything. The plays will return as soon as the computer is working again.
