Obama and Pelosi been promising bailout all along, question was always if Big 3 could hold out until late January.

Looks like now they got a compromise to get $15 billion now to tide them thru.

Congress been looking over big 3 plans---Congress being about the only folks who could run these companies worse than thier own management of late.. and Democrats just love tinkering with details of the plans, seem to wish to run companies themselves.

Hey Terry, could you please educate us all on the nationalizing of our banking system and the allocation of the 700 BILLION DOLLAR bailout and the 12 TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT that your boy ran up during his term?

You are a great American and TIA.

I seem to remember Bush on TV begging for the bailout. I rememner McCain had to suspend his campaign so he could help orchesrate it. I remember Obama voting for it. I see Barney Frank begging for it. This is not a Dem - Republican issue. They are all to blame. It only hurts the argument against it to blame one one side or the other.

in terms of crafting any kind of help to Big 3 during this lame-duck presidency, it is almost entirely a Repub-Demo issue.

Don't you recall the Senate vote last month on auto bailout the Dems cancelled 'cause it was guaranteed to fail due to Repub opposition?

If Repubs wanted bailout now, or Repubs in White house willing to use the money from other bailout plan, the big 3 woulda been bailed out weeks ago.

Bush is only willing to use money, already appropriated to big 3, from some silly auto energy efficiency allocation. Pelosi opposed this, as she truly believes Congress can and should help micro-manage the long range plans of these companies (very galling for these CEOs, even ones as bad as these, have to sit there and listen to folks talk of managing who never ran a business in thier lives). Also, diverting money from this fund means loss of power and face for Dems, blinking first in the showdown. Standard DC politics... But Pelosi just dropped her opposition to it, and that is why there is a breakthrough now, and Big 3 have good chance of getting aid this week.

all your other talk (Bush begging, McCain cancelling, etc) is about the other bailout, and I know it's easy to confuse the two. I opposed that $700 billion plan, and mentioned one I like. But they have changed the focus of that $700 billion more to my liking--glad they are finally listening to me, as all these undergrads with clipboard around me and hot coeds from the Department of Economics, University of the Punjab, having some effect at last.

All I know is that they will most likely get something and Bush will not veto it. Obama is also wrongly in favor of this. Who is supposed to buy these cars they make? The people who can't pay their mortgages?

Reid: Senate could vote on auto bailout tonight, Thurs 11th

David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid said late Thursday a deal could be reached soon on an auto bailout deal with a vote possible sometime this evening.

We're a lot further down the road than I thought we'd be... There's still a possibility and even maybe a probability that sometime this evening will be able to vote," Reid said. "We're doing our best to resolve this."

General Motors Corp. and Cerberus Capital Management LP were racing to a cut a last-minute deal to save a $14 billion auto bailout package from collapse after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he would oppose a compromise brokered by the White House and Democrats that the House passed Wednesday night.

Senate Republicans reject auto bailout compromise
David Shepardson / Detroit News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Senate Republicans rejected Democratic proposals on a compromise auto bailout Thursday night, leaving little hope that the Senate would approve a rescue package General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC say are vital to their survival.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., had been leading GOP negotiations on the $14 billion rescue. After hours of talks, the negotiators broke while Corker took what had been agreed to so far to his Republican colleagues, who apparently rejected the deal as failing to extract enough concessions from the United Auto Workers union.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky emerged from a meeting with fellow Republicans saying no agreement was reached.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., could still seek votes Friday on Democratic proposals. But with any legislation requiring 60 votes to pass, significant Republican support would be needed, and there was little optimism for passage.
