I played it, which means I post it:

Friday 3 Balls:

PARLAY Cabrera(+150) over Fasth/Henry WITH Andrade(+175) over Calcavecchia/Azinger for 1* @ 5.87/1 @ Bet365

(Corrections to my prior post: Pettersson was 13/1 to place and -125 in his matchup.)

What stood out yesterday that I should have remembered but didn't was the absence of rough that gave shotmakers plenty of opportunities to make a score off a bad tee shot, which only promotes more confident driving in the first place. The undulating and tightly mown chipping areas and hard and fast greens are also of a piece with that style of play. Goosen will benefit from all that, I suspect.

2nd round update: 3-1-0; +1.85 units

Stankowski/Barber WON by 1
Cabrera/Donald WON by 1
Cabrera/Franco LOST by 7
Toledo/Pappas WON by 1

Mid-point update:

Flesch/Baird LOST by 7
Flesch/McCarron WON by 4
Flesch/Perez WON (Perez withdrew)
Huston/Calcavecchia Leads by 2
Tway/Calcavecchia Leads by 8
Parnevik/Daly WON by 2
Hart/Pavin LOST (Hart disqualified)
Rollins/Mayfair WON by 7
DiMarco/Franco Leads by 3

Weir mc
Cink 28th
Tway 1st
Harrington mc

Excellent situation at the cut. Have had some good breaks in the 18-hole plays and the matchups look good at the cut with only three remaining. Cink has a decent shot at a place finish and hopefully Tway can repeat his feat of the Ford Championship when he also the leader at the cut and hung on for 3rd place.

Fred Couples in his own words:

At Sawgrass:
?I didn?t play any golf before I got here. You know, I?m not in shock because something?s clicked in my swing where at least I feel like I?m doing what I need to be doing and I?m hitting the ball well . . . I think I have enough game to go out there. But, when you?re never there it?s never easy. But the way I?m hitting it, I need to overlook that and just play good golf and keep hitting it solid.?

On playing the weekend at Sugarloaf:
?A lot of the shots just don?t fit my eye and there?s some awfully, awfully tough shots. If I can go over one hole, it seems like every year I hit it in these bunkers on the third hole and then fat it out of there into the creek like I did today. I get very frustrated because it?s like in your mind you hit it there . . . I thought it was one of the harder rounds we played all year. You just couldn?t judge the wind and the greens were like concrete, so I feel good about 73.?

On making the cut for the first time at Sugarloaf:
?The last couple times I?ve played here I wasn?t playing that well and so it was just fine to miss the cut. Whereas this year I played very, very well yesterday, and I came out today and birdied the first hole and then shot 40 on the front nine, so my mindset was to get my swing back. I didn?t feel very good with my swing and so I wanted to start hitting the ball better. And to make the cut is a good deal because I can come out and work on my swing under the heat again tomorrow and Sunday.?

Couples at Augusta is still priced at 100/1 @ Bet365.
---------- ---------- ----------

Even if some rain takes some fire out of the greens, it seems like it will be very difficult for more than one or two players to take it deep on this course. My first instinct was to invest in someone that might come from way back (Toms, Magee), but the odds just weren?t there. Goosen?s swing looks sharp at the moment, but I think he will be relying on his talent much more than a grinding resolution from here on in. Janzen sustaining his superb chipping touch from yesterday over 36 holes in the crucible is what I will be keeping a close eye on. And I have expected good things from Tway since Thursday.

MATCHUPS and 3 BALLS for 1* each:

Baird(+138) over B. Pappas/Kuehne @ Bet365
Couples(+120) over Tanaka/McClean @ Bet365
Andrade(-123) over Sindelar @ 5dimes
Pernice(-115) over Stricker @ 5dimes
Cink(+162) over Huston/Franco @ Bet365
Magee(+150) over Mize/Carter @ Bet365
Toms(-150) over Calcavecchia (Tournament) @ Olympic

Outrights: 1-2; +6.00 units

Cink 6th
Tway 2nd

Great event! Surprised that Tway did not hold onto his lead - he was three shots ahead at the turn - but all credit to Crane who shot 64-63 over the weekend. At least it validated the place-only approach with Tway. Cink came up a shot short for a top-5 finish when he failed to birdie the final and third-easiest hole of the day, but at least the stake was covered with the Goosen/Cink hedge. Will be tough to top this result next week!
