Yeah, I'm a bowler. Thursday night mens league, my current avg is 201. Any of you guys heading to Billings, Montana for the 2002 National Tournament? We will be there May 10th- 13th. Was going to start a thread about going in late April to see if by some slim chance anyone else here at Jacks was going to be out there the same week-end. How about it? anyone, Bueller........;)

Redsfan, yeah I'm going last weekend of March, hopefully wont be a lot of snow or 30 below. I would like to have a repeat of Albuquerque 2 years ago,my doubles partner and I ended up 9th with 1438 and only shot 387 first game, boy would I like to have that one back. After I get back from Billings I can give you a little heads up on what the shot is like.

Tboyrent-

That would be great as far as an update on the conditions. I'm left-handed, but the shot shouldn't be that big of a difference. Its Nationals, though, so I expect it to be tough. 9th overall must have been a really nice check--:D

Last year in Reno, I won 5 brackets during team bowling and just killed 'em at the blackjack and craps tables. Should have seen the look on the wife's face when I handed her a bunch of C-notes when she picked me up at the airport.....

Redsfann, I am also left handed, some of the guys around here say I remind them of a guy named Steve Cook in appearance and game, I wish I had his game I'd be on tour now.

BTW, Do they have any casinos close to "Tumbleweedville" ?
That year in N Mex. my buddy got in the super brackets and he got beat by 2 pins the first game and those 2 cost him 20,000 because he would have won both brackets if he gets through the first, that would make me very ill and

This is me when I leave a 7 pin -:thefinger

TBoyrent, what is the typical average of a person on the tour? My friend is big into bowling and i didn't realize the amount of money you can win.

in2fitness, there used to be a min. avg of 200 for 2 years and pay a mem. fee 150.00 to become a regional player , you being from GA,would be in the South region, they hold tourn. on weekends.I believe you have to cash in 4 regionals before you can bowl any national events. the money is getting better than it was 2 years ago, hopefully they will get a corp. sponsor and really make it worth the time, like the PGA.

PS, I think you can still bowl in a regional as a non-member you just pay a little more.

TBoyrent, thank you. I used to bowl all the time when I was younger and was pretty decent. I miss it and want to start up again. My friend has spent a shitload on equipment but I guess it pays in tournaments to have the best stuff.

On the course!
I am a 192 ave this season, bowling only one night a week. I was at Reno last year, and Albq the year before. These weer my only two visits to Nationals. I will only go for the Reno or Vegas venues from here on out......it is a waste of a vacation for me to go bowl a 450 series on those lanes!

I love to watch these guys with all their "local" 230 avgs go get 520's on those bastardly lane conditions! To me? Not worth the heartache!

Had fun in Reno, though.......love to gamble, and we went during March Madness, so it was nice to hang out in the books.

I remember Steve Cook...Big dude...he was like 6'7" and had a very high back swing...memories of the pba in the 80s...anyhow...I used to bowl 2 nights a week and averaged in the low 200s for a few years...gave it up about 2 years ago but still sub in friday night leagues from time to time. This year I'm averaging in the high 190s as a sub. F@#in 10 pins :thefinger

Glad to see fellow bowlers on the board :D

Tboyrent--

Yeah, there is a casino out in "tumbleweedland"--
and thats where we are staying for the Tournament. Which is why I told the others that I'm going with that I am only staying 3 nights.
4 years ago in Reno we were there for 5 nights, and I probably slept a total of 10 hours in the time we were there. If I wasn't in the Sportsbooks until the last game or horse race went off, I was in the middle of another 15 hour craps game. One of the guys that went with us that year sat down at a Caribeeian (??) Stud table and other than going to the john, played for 26 hours straight. How I even found the time to bowl is beyond me...
The thing that pisses me off the most about leaving 7 pins is missing them........

Another bowler on board...

Another bowler on board...

and there are more!! Blazerman, and a couple of others from my hometown in MICHIGAN come here also. Couple of more WRONG siders to join TBOY! :D

Having grown up in an "alley", both my parents worked there when I was young, I used to keep my tricycle there. Been bowling since I got bigger than the ball, so it's been about 35 years for me now, and I'm not 40 yet!

Haven't done much bowling lately, mainly just the HIGH ROLLER events in VEGAS in JAN and JULY. Haven't gone to NAT'L's since RENO, so have a good time in BILLINGS. Since getting married, I've cut back on my bowling big time, down to one nite a week, a big time scratch league on MON NITES. Highest paying league in the Country from what I hear, with $32,000 for 1st place four man team, and over $100,000 in total prize fund. Some top guys bowl in it when not on tour, Robert Smith for one, and a TEAM USA guy, Scott Norton, and girl, Missy Belinder. It's a great league, shot changes every round from tons of oil to nearly none, so it gives no one team the advantage. Averaged 207 in that league two years ago, which was 12th high and only 4 pins behind Robert Smith. 2nd round shot is short flat oil... only 6 guys managed to average over 190, top average was 201.

May be bowling in VEGAS over the SUPER BOWL, still not sure... we'll see!! Good luck all!!

REMEMBER: Keep your mind in the gutter not your balls !!

Would not recommend professional bowling as a way to make a living. Despite the higher payoffs these days, your expenses are just too big a hump to get over. If you can be one of the top 20-25 guys on the tour, you can make a few bucks or break even. Otherwise, it is a losing proposition. As Randercity will probably verify, some of the best bowlers in the world don't bowl on the tour. These guys go around and bowl all the big money events like High Roller, etc. They can make enough money in the brackets and sweepers in these kind of events to more than survive;anything they make in the tournaments is frosting. Eventually, some will wind up on tour, but I think most of those guys made more money in the so-called "amateur" events. For those of you who followed or participated in the High Roller like events, it is surprising me that the "legendary' Rudy "Revs" is evidently doing ok on tour.

Have not bowled in league play for about 3 years. still go about once a week and rent the lane for a few hours. averaged 199 and 206 for the 2 leagues i was in. i used to work in a bowling alley so i practiced for many (free) hours. when i was 16, averaged 206 in a friday league and all i wanted was to turn pro. i ended up with arthritis in my ankle and a "felon" (sp) in my big toe. after surgery and rehab, was never nearly the same. averge dropped to something like 175 and i quit for a while. just my 2 cents guys! Ferdville, You are right its tough to make a living at bowling. I cannot believe Brian Kretzer went to the PBA, I think STORM might have had a hand in that decision because I have watched this guy for the last 8 years just hammer Hoinke Super Classic sweeper events and other tournaments around the region, hell 2 years back the guy spent 4000 in brackets and made back 19,000 and only shot 657 in the sweeper 15,000 profit for 2 hours is not to shabby. I know a few guys that have been on tour for a period of time and it can really wear you down mentally if you cant make a check,a couple of these guys went off tour and almost gave up completely they were that burned out. Myself I'm planning on shooting some regionals later this year ,haven't bowled any for about 5 years and just want to see if I can hang.

That sounds like a good plan - I wish you luck. The tour is a real grind. I knew a kid that grew up in a bowling alley - dad was always managing; mom league coordinator. Did real well in all locals; went on tour and was Rookie of the Year. Came back following year for a few events and that was it. He is probably bowling in same league as Randercity. Name is Billy Myers, Jr. Tour is a mental challenge as much as bowling.
