suarez is now favored over webb at 5 dimes.......
b.l....in retrospect,i don`t think the gloves have gotten "bigger".....
maybe the color or style gives that impression....and the reyes gloves,i believe, are known as puncher`s gloves....and do tend to cause cuts.....maybe a coincidence...but,that`s the general consensus....
panama lewis had his own way of dealing with the glove issue.....
he removed the padding.....how scary is that?...
an interesting little tidbit...
"""Three-time world champion Erik 'El Terrible' Morales has been wearing a puncher's glove, Reyes, while training to take on Manny Pacquiao in Top Rank's big "The Battle" Pay-Per-View on Jan. 21 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. Morales, who usually wears Winning gloves, has made the switch while working out with his new trainer, Jose Luis 'Maestro' Sr., while training in Mexico. Gloves were a big issue in the first Morales vs. Pacquiao fight. By contract, both fighters wore Winning. After the fight Freddie Roach, chief trainer for Pacquiao, said "those were the wrong kind of gloves for Manny." For this fight, each fighter has a choice of gloves.""
Based on what I've seen, I always assumed that each weight class (or groups of weight classes) would have their own weight (size) of gloves. It only makes sence that the weight of the glove be proportionate to the weight of the fighter. Why would Ivan Calderon and Miguel Cotto wear the same size gloves?
Anyway
The information given by the governing bodies is clear and consistant, welters and below all wear 8 ounce gloves. So why is it that the gloves look bigger as these guys move up in weight? You would think that if the fighter is bigger and the gloves are the same, that the gloves would look smaller...not bigger.
You must be right, the style and color must have a huge effect on our perception of the gloves size. Come to think of it, the gloves in Morales-Barrera #3 were yellow, and the gloves in #1 were black. My wife taught me that wearing light colors makes you look bigger and dark colors make you look smaller.
I believe they used Reyes gloves in the 1st fight and they used Winning gloves in the 3rd. Reyes gloves are very skinny, Winning gloves are wide and round. Maybe that combined with the colors is enough to influence our perception of size.
Either way you're right, Reyes gloves are considered punchers gloves and Winning gloves (amoung others) are defensive gloves giving you a wider block.
I recall Pac saying that if he had Reyes gloves on he would've ko'ed Morales, and now he's saying that he's gonna take Erics head off this time.
When told about these comments, Eric just smiled and said "lets see if he can do it"
Should be an excellent fight, and I expect fireworks early from Pac, but I think Morales can take his punch and weather the early storm.
