Mendy has a promoter based in the South; he has boxed in South and North Carolina. I am not entirely sure of the setup. I think the guy putting up the money is a French businessman who lives most of the year in the U.S.

Do you get the feeling that Fury has improved from their first meeting? McDermott is nothing special, that's for sure. Fury definitely seems to have that 'golden boy' edge, in that all of the close rounds will most likely sway his way. For the first fight to be scored 98-92 Fury was a crime. There has been some confusion over the rounds in this one, but from what I understand it is a 12 round fight, not 10 as has been reported in some places. Can anyone confirm?

I hope they've got more than the referee judging this one. That is one ridiculous rule they've got in the UK, for the ref to be the sole judge. Talk about leaving the door open for corruption. What do you think of this, Graham or any of you UK guys?

Don't quote me on this but I believe Britain has now changed this rule due to their first fight.
Graham would know for sure.

Fury vs McDermott is a 12-rounder. I confirmed this with the promoter. There will be three judges. The English title (as distinct from "British" title) is at stake. The bout is also a British championship final eliminator, and this is why it is 12 rounds. English title bouts are 10-rounders. It is my understanding that all English (as well as British) title bouts now have the three judges system, with the referee just doing the refereeing and not scoring.

There is widespread confusion in the U.S. (but probably not among the MadJack guys) about "England" and "Britain" (or to be more accurate "Great Britain"). England is part of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). It really pissed off Ken Buchanan, a proud Scot, to be referred to as "English" by American reporters.

Referees as sole arbiter

Referees as sole arbiter

Hello Quanah

I don't think that having a referee as sole arbiter in Britain opens the door to corruption, but if the ref scores the fight "wrong" then that's it; with three judges, at least if one judge gets it wrong there is a good chance that the other two will get it right.

I keep hearing about "corruption" in the British fights. I simply think it is a matter of a judge seeing a fight the wrong way. Often a judge can start off by seeing a fight a certain way and then stay with this perception, which might not be the right one. (The late Jack Fiske called it "getting stuck in a wrong scoring groove".)

Years ago in Britain, believe it or not many decisions handed down by the referee (when the ref was the sole judge) favoured the visiting fighter. When the American featherweight Don Johnson got the verdict over Howard Winstone there was outrage, to a lesser extent when U.S. heavyweight Mike De John got the verdict over Dick Richardson and Willie Pastrano over Brian London. When the French lightweight Guy Gracia got the verdict over Dave Charnley it was considered a mind-boggling decision. British referees in many cases, seemed, years ago, to lean over backwards to favour the visiting guy. It was widely said in the British fight trade, despairingly: "This is the only country in the world where this would happen."

Times change, but I do believe that a judge doesn't at all like to be considered a "bad judge" -- that is, someone whose judgement cannot be trusted. There have been so-called bad decisions all over the world and throughout boxing history and the U.S. hasn't been exempt: Louis-Walcott I, Schmeling-Braddock II might have been two of the most controversial decisions in ring history.

Scoring fights is often a matter of opinion, what an individual is seeing (or "thinks" he/she is seeing).

Of course, if rounds are closely contested then there is every likelihood that a local judge will give these rounds to the home fighter (Hekkie Budler vs Juanito Rubillar I in S. Africa may be a recent case in point).

Just my opinion.

You said it exactly like it is. I have a feeling that Fury has improved. Obviously it is not the kind of fight when I am very sure with outcome, but good enough to bet.

Thanks Graham, Andrey, and Weepaul for your responses.

I think you're right Graham. The bottom line is that judging fights is subjective. There will always be disagreement in close fights. It's just that when we see overtly ridiculous decisions that we start to think that something is shady. SKY friday fights have recently earned this reputation.

I for one am happy to hear that the ref as the sole judge thing is on the outs. The ref has enough to deal with in there.

Personally, I wouldn't wager the over. It may very well go the dst but Duddy has been buzzed in a few fights by guys that can't really crack. JR can punch a little bit. I think if Jr hurts Duddy, he can get the job done and get him out. I would be pretty nervous betting -200 on the over with Duddy's chin or lack of. Also, Jr isn't exactly Willie Pep.

BTW, to answer Quanahs question on who sucks more...I think Duddy does and bet accordingly. I was looking forward to wagering nice odds on his first step up fight. I knew he was a hype job. Little did I know that Lyle would be good enough to get the job done...Odds had to have been at least +1200. I think Jr is a hype job as well but he's shown me more. I didn't wager a bundle but I think Jr gets the job done.

"the bunker"
jr has nice fundamentals.....he looks good...throws punches the way they`re supposed to be thrown...first time i saw him i was seriously impressed...

but he`s not all that...

how do guys become 41-1 and 29-1 without fighting top 10 fighters?....

both struggle occasionally vs the garbage they feed them ...theres a reason they feed both guys mediocre competion at this point in their careers...

could be fun to watch,though...competitively,looks good on paper...but make no mistake...this is set up as a win for chavez....the venue favors him....

just not 100% certain about jr`s strength/toughness...

Fury came in at 270 but doesn't look too bad. Corpulent John McDermott may have the worst physique in modern day history. He could fast for 6 months, run 10 miles a day and he'd still weigh between 250-255 with a spare tire suitable for a big rig. Dude simply can't lose an ounce of fat and muscle mass is like poison to his frame. The lummox could win, though. He's got more mettle than most, which belies his John Candy physique.

Another question I have is where the hell is McDermott's pecker. Seems to be missing.
