Updated list of fighters you shouldn't bet on:
#1 Michael Grant
#2 Robert Davis
#3 Zab Judah
In the "through 7 rounds" thread GW and I
discussed why Judah should be on this list.
Don't get me wrong, Judah at his best is a
top 10 pound for pound fighter (imo). But
he is hardly ever at his best and it could end
up costing him. (see "through 7 rounds")
What these fighters have in common is a
lack of effort in the ring. For different reasons
they do not have the killer instinct it takes
to be the best. How great would Judah be
if he had the killer instinct of Mike Tyson,
or the heart and will of Vinny Pazienza.
I am rambling about this because I watched two
completely different fights Saturday night. Judah
was by far the better man but almost lost the fight
because he didn't put out the effort. Forrest is by
far the better boxer but he got beat by a guy that
would rather die than give less than 110%.
Both of these scenarios should be
remembered when capping boxing.
I read that Mayorga wants De La Hoya next.
That will be a tough fight for Mayorga if Oscar
fights the right way. Mayorga needs plenty of room
to throw his wide, looping punches. Forrest made
the mistake of trying to box on the outside and
moved straight back when Mayorga started
throwing hay-makers. I think the best way to beat
Mayorga is to fight close and stay on the inside.
De La Hoya should force Mayorga to fight going
backwards and when Ricardo swings Oscar should
move forward even more. While Ricardo is throwing
his long wild punches Oscar should counter with
straight right hands, short left hooks, and uppercuts.
I would love to see that fight!
And I'd like to here any opinions on these subjects.
