As far as that goes, I agree. I guess I thought (apparently mistakenly) that there were laws that said otherwise.

Ali could have gone in the service and had it very easy there. But he stood up for what was right at the time.
And he paid the price for it.

I guess I'm in the minority on this one and don't understand what was so great about this guy. I'm probably just ignorant to the circumstances so I understand if this pisses people off, but I'm being genuine here when I say I don't know what all the wall to wall coverage is about on TV on Ali.

I'm not a big boxing fan, but I understand he was considered the greatest boxer of all time, but I don't see coverage like this for other sports icons when they pass.

I keep hearing how great he was for the civil rights movement, but I honestly don't know what he did to further that cause other than being a successful black man, what am I missing? Didn't he dodge going to Vietnam? Is that ok?

I'm not a hater, honestly, I'd just like to understand why this is such big news and he's considered such a great human being.

That's a great story. Again, I have nothing against him, I'd just like to know more.

He was one of the biggest sports heroes of all time. He probably had more fans than any one individual ever and at one time was the most recognized name in the world. He had a lot of haters too. What are you looking for? He was bigger than Babe Ruth. What did Babe Ruth do?

I keep seeing the talking heads on TV refer to him as a great humanitarian and how impactful he was for the Civil Rights movement. I don't see them giving any examples. Maybe those examples are so obvious I'm the only one in the dark and should know about them, but I honestly don't.

When you bring up MLK Jr or Rosa Parks and talk about Civil Rights I certainly know what you are talking about, but with Ali, I don't and would like to know what all the fuss is about.

I never saw him box, before my time, but I understand why he is recognized at the greatest ever at his craft, it's the other stuff I don't know much about.

I did get very close to him at the Joe Louis Arena in 09 as he was there for the Stanley Cup Final game and was almost as big of an attraction as the game itself.

People who risk everything for what they believe tend to get some credit, crazy huh.

No he was not a draft dodger unlike some who manipulated there way out of it like chickenhawk politicians and those who ran off to Canada he stood in that ring and took that shot. More like a draft denier. He risked jail and probably received 100s of death threats. I respect that.
