if you like boxing, that was pretty damn good. if you like slugging and knockouts, it's was pretty boring. i admired mayweather, but it's up to the challenger to up the stakes by going for the knockout, for the win, rather than hanging back and staying in the safe zone where the other guy is pretty much unbeatable because of his superior quickness.

come on, man, you outweigh the guy by 20 pounds, get him into the ropes, lean on him, keep him close so you negate his superior quickness.

OF COURSE THAT'S EASIER SAID THAN DONE. It's the difference between a small chance and no chance.

But you could see after a couple rounds there was no way in hell Alvarez was gonig to beat that guy by playing his (Mayweather's) game.

We bought the last Mayweather fight, hes so damn quick that the challenger is just happy to lay back and collect the check. You gotta risk getting knocked out to win but they will not risk it and I'm not paying $75 for that especially with good college games on.

Let me guess, they sparred around the entire fight with Mayweather being a bit quicker landing more punches and he wins in a unanimous decision. No knockout or knockdowns and both fighter make millions without taking much of a hit.

Exactly. And SOOO many fights are like this now. It's like baseball - they're paid too much to get their nuts in front of a sharp grounder, so they backhand at it.

There's something wrong with a challenger talking about what a great experience this was.

Glad you enjoyed your boxing night out, Alvarez. You had the ultimate ringside seat. Ring-inside seat, even. Too bad your undefeated record is now gone with the wind, and you don't have the champion's belt.

Three letters.....

MMA

Yes, it is better on average. But I have seen a number of MMA fights that follow the pattern we saw tonight, where they never really come to terms with each other.

They should make a rule that the purse is cut in half if you don't win by knockout. I dont know, that's off the top of my head. There has to be some incentive to get some actual fighting, rather than just outpointing. But again, this is the challenger's fault, not the champion's.

Seriously - if you had a chance to fight Floyd Mayweather, I mean, fuck the money, the chance to ruin his perfect record, and knock him on his ass and laugh at him - how do you not go all-out to get that?

What's killing boxing, imo, is the challengers don't really care about winning. Which is a symptom of too much money in all corners.

Well that and all the fixed fights and the massive amounts of corruption.

MMA....watch 12 fights on a card.

Boxing......watch way less then 12 fights on a card.

What I'm saying is, Alvarez didn't try hard enough. You can say he used wrong tactics or strategy, which is true enough, but I think it's deeper than that. Where's the maniacal desire to come out on top, and do whatever it takes to achieve the result. It simply isn't there.

Have the nuts to risk getting knocked tf out in round one or two or three - if that's the way that gives you a chance to win. This was like something set up to allow Mayweather to demonstrate his superior speed. Mayweather said after the fight his actual weight was 146, so he dropped four pounds from weigh-in. Did Alvarez try to tie him up or lean on him? Not at all. He was content to mirror Mayweather at about 80% speed.

No doubt MMA is better. Often you get several good fights on a card. Nothing inherently wrong with boxing, though, it's just there aren't that many good fights. MMA seems much better managed. Like someone is taking the fan's interests into account, not just trying to maximize money.

I like the three rounds better too. Or five. More condensed. C'mon, if you're going to fight, fight. Don't need 12 rounds to prove who's better. Too many boxing matches are like fencing these days. What was that match with that Marine Frank Stap or something vs Nogueira - I'm getting the names wrong, but I have never seen two people punch each other that hard repeatedly in a short bit of time. You just don't see that in boxing much these days.

Cornholio should have come out of the ring a lot uglier after that fight. He had a chance to mess up Mayweather's uncut face, but he stayed back the whole twelve rounds. His strategy was the equivalent of challenging Usain Bolt to 12 100-yard dashes in a row. He's quicker than you! Find another way to beat him.

Alll right, I'm done now. Just feel like we had something here if Alvarez tried to mess him up a little using his weight advantage.

The Marine you are talking about was Brian Stann, and the fight you are referencing was against Wanderlei Silva.

(Stann is now retired, that was his last fight)

That's right, thanks Kick.

That was the best punching I've ever seen, boxing, MMA or anywhere else.

Just one fight before you could have seen great boxing.

True, that was a better fight.

I didn't even mind the Mayweather, I like watching him work. Just get irritated at Alvarez tactics. Well, they call it tactics, it seems like strategy to me.

What I like about boxing is there's no kicking involved.
