My thinking on Bird is that they not only had to get through tough series in the East....then had to play the West. I do realize they beat the Rockets twice..and how the Lakers let that happen is a mystery. Celtics went to finals 4 years in a row....84-87....they had to fight to get there. If Lakers had been in the West, they prob wouldn't have gone 8 out of 10 times....while if Celtics could have cruised through west they would have gone more times and probably won at least one more...if not more.

Not the best argument...but just feel like for Lakers it came down to the Finals, where for Celtics they had to play quality teams to get there. I mean, take away Pistons and Sixers and its pretty much Lakers/Celtics every year.....but Celtics didn't get there every year b/c only 2 real contenders in the 80's were in the East. Rockets and Mavericks were good but not of the same caliber as Lakers/Celtics/Sixers/Pistons. 3 out of the 4 best teams in East.

Kind of like...teams from the East had to win 2 series to win it all where teams from the West only had to win 1. Just like this year.....Heat really only have to win one...the East is terrible where there are a few good teams in West.

Not taking anything away from Magic and Lakers....just saying they were a great team in a terrible conference.

Today's basketball is all athletic and little substance. Post up and clear out one side or else just throw up the 3-pointer. Way more skill in the Bird-Magic-and then Jorday era. Labron is a better athlete than the others, bigger, faster, stronger, but he doesn't have the skill of any of those players.

Labron may someday go down as the greatest player, or maybe second to Michael, but who would you take to handle the ball with 10 seconds left and the NBA championship on the line. Labron wouldn't even be in my top 10. That says alot!!!

I'd rather have Larry Bird on my team than Lebron.......put Bird in the West back in the day and he probably ends up with 5+ titles...not to mention what would have happened if Len Bias doesn't OD on cocaine.

Bird is still the best in my book. Jordan probably the best ever.

Most tragic sports event in my lifetime was Len Bias OD

I still cant believe how that happened to him. I was so stoked to watch him play on that team.

life really sucks sometimes

It was mentioned in this thread already....but only once which suprises me with the knowledge spread throughout.....

Put MJ or Bird or anyone we wanna argue about in todays game, and you can add huge numbers to all of their stats.....defense was played and played very well and aggressive....fouls weren't called.....

That is THE BIGGEST reason this argument will never be fair.....that literally is so huge.

LBJ I think is the man, but let MJ get to the rim every posession with noone around and he probably hits 80 in a few games....

MJ best ever and its not even close.....

After that never will we know so I just enjoy watching whoever the phenom is at that time

Its definitely apples/oranges in trying to compare players from different eras. I'm also biased with Bird. Just loved everything about him. Loved Jordan too although by the end of his career, if you even looked at MJ wrong it was a foul.

A few things that may have hurt Bird's legacy...not that he isn't considered great....but to be considered the best ever...

Came into the league when he was 23. Guys like Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Lebron all have at least a couple years on him as far as longevity. Maybe that's trivial, don't know....but that combined with the way he played...after 10 years his body was done. And like we've said...Len Bias. I think Bird had just won 3 straight league MVP's and 2 titles, went to finals 4 straight years (if you count the following year)....Bird's prime. Bird and Bias together with the rest of that team. Who knows if the Pistons ever get past them. Who knows if Jordan and the Bulls win that many.

If Bias lived, we might very well be saying that Bird is hands down best player ever. Or Bias for that matter.

Lebron is great. I just don't think I'll ever get over the way he left Cleveland. Both in how he did it and the fact that he went to team that already had star players. I know Jordan got help but its just different to go to a team rather than having the team come to you....and maybe it was never going to happen in Cleveland so I get it.

If I could have one guy in their prime....it would be either Jordan or Bird. I'd probably take Jordan but I'd have to think about it :)

If I'm picking the best ever , I'm picking guys who they CHANGED rules for to make the competition closer not who they changed or overlooked rules for the players advantage. So give me WILT CHAMBERLAIN or JABBAR if I had to win one game.
I know athletes are far better today, but I'm also reminded of the story about TY COBB when he was asked at an old age, "How good would you hit if you were playing today?" TY answered ,"About .290." "Is that all ?", the interviewer said. Ty replied, "For god's sakes, I'm 72 years old." :0002
