CHARGERS/49ERS Over 35.5 ? The Chargers put 31 points on the board last week in St. Louis, and coach Shottenheimer has stated that he is playing this game to win and build a positive attitude going into next week?s season opener. Expect the starters to see action for at last the first half, and probably into the 3rd quarter, as San Diego gives Brees some more valuable experience with the starting unit. By contrast, Niners coach Mariucci says that he is more concerned with keeping his starters healthy for next week, and he intends to pull his starters after the 1st quarter. This means that Brees and the San Diego offense will be going up against the San Francisco reserves for all of the second quarter and probably part of the third quarter. Given this scenario, I wouldn?t be surprised if the Chargers approach 30 points again! The 49ers should put at least a touchdown on the board, and even their backups could have some offensive success vs. a vulnerable Chargers defense, so this seemingly low total seems very reachable to me.
