Yes, they made a malt liquor, but there was also just a regular lager called Schlitz. Nasty shit.

Grain belt would make you puke from the smell of it.

How about Red, White and Welfare, er, I mean, Red, White and Blue.

Rheinlander and Olympia are another couple of old nasty, cheap beers you don't see around any more.

Black Label.....Buckhorn.......

Rhinelander beer is actually still around. I sell the 7oz shorties at my bar. Not that bad for a cheaper beer. Has a little higher alcohol content than regular beers.

That's cool. What I remember about Reinhlander in my undergrad days in the mid 80s was that it sold for 4.49 a case :scared:
Was sold in long necked bar bottles and there were floaties in the bottom of every bottle.

We bought it in returnable bottles back in the mid '70's. If I remember right, it was 3 cases for $10 plus deposit :mj07:

Hold on redsfann! My Dad was a wholesale Schlitz distributor in the prime days when it was 'the beer that made Milwaukee famous'. The brew did go down hill after the death of the president in the hey day, his replacement from accounting killed it, early 70's. PBR has the old recipe and is bottling, I had one, good stuff.

how right you are..

as a Schlitz salesman I can tell you first hand how the change in the brewing destroyed the taste of this once great product..

at one time Schlitz was a comparable seller to Bud in just about every market where they shared space ..

one must keep in mind that these are pre Miller Lite days..and....

The Champagne Of Bottle Beer...Miller High Life had suffered a major set back in sales when the perception of it being a "Ladies Beer" ..

Miller would rebound with the "Pony * pack in glass ...and the Miller Lite Ads with "Taste Great ...Less Filling" captured those who were caught up in the get healthy craze sweeping the nations as everybody and their mother joined Jim Fixx running around in tight shorts and long socks..

Miller would die again but reemerge as it was positioned as a "popular priced beer instead of a "Premium Brand.

The Schlitz brand was postioned the same way but failed miserable..

Schlits Malt Liquor ruled the malt liquor brand for many years but with the Schlitz brewery mismanaged to the very end it fell victim to mamy malt liquors who came and went..

Including St.Ides and so others..

lotta good times in the biz for 17 years..

but it did in fact almost killed me..

want to drink a quality beer..

try this..

Now that is one fine beer there, old school. :toast:
And dirt cheap in the Czech Republic.
In Prague the bars have a sign outside telling you what beer they serve. You see the pilsner Urquell sign or a budvar sign and that's what served there.
20 oz draws for 2.5 euros, or about 3 dollars last time I was in Prague.
Enjoyed a couple of these on Saturday while tailgating...

And I know all about Schiltz and it's history, I personally never cared for it.
Old style when it was still brewed in LaCrosse, Wisconsin?
Now you're talking!!
