Wednesday's Tip Sheet

Game of the Night: Pistons at Lakers ? 10:35 PM EST

Although both these teams have struggled of late, each squad is seeking its second win in January. The Pistons (17-21 SU, 17-20-1 ATS) embark on a four-game Western Conference road swing following back-to-back home losses to Utah and San Antonio. Detroit jumped out to huge leads early in each of those games, but melted down each time as an underdog to fall to 2-7 the last nine games. The Pistons are riding a 5-1 OVER stretch the past six contests, while allowing at least 109 points in each of their last five defeats.

The Lakers (22-19 SU, 17-23-1 ATS) have played the last seven games without LeBron James, winning only twice. James remains sidelined with a groin injury and isn?t rushing to return to the court, as the Lakers snapped a three-game skid in Sunday?s 107-97 triumph at Dallas as 7 ?-point underdogs. Los Angeles ended a 14-game stretch in which it allowed at least 100 points as the Lakers yielded 30 second half points after trailing at halftime, 67-54. Brandon Ingram led the Lakers with 29 points, while L.A. overcame a 4-of-20 shooting performance from Kyle Kuzma.

Detroit has captured four of the past five meetings with Los Angeles, but the Lakers knocked off the Pistons at Staples Center last season, 113-93 as three-point underdogs. Since starting the season with a 12-4 home mark, the Lakers have dropped four of the past five at Staples Center, including losses as a favorite against the Grizzlies and Knicks.

But, First

A battle of first place teams hook up at the Toyota Center as the Rockets look to stay hot at home against the Bucks. Houston (23-16 SU, 20-18-1 ATS) is riding a 10-game home winning streak and hasn?t lost at the Toyota Center since late November. The Rockets have won 12 of the past 14 games overall, including Monday?s 125-113 triumph over the Nuggets as one-point favorites. James Harden led the Rockets with 32 points and 14 assists as Houston enters tonight?s contest listed as a home underdog for the third time since Christmas.

Milwaukee (28-11 SU, 22-15-2 ATS) remains undefeated off a loss this season after rallying past Utah on Monday, 114-102 to cash as 5 ?-point favorites. The Bucks outscored the Jazz, 31-16 in the fourth quarter, while Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds before fouling out. Milwaukee owns a 5-2 road record in the last seven games since losing in overtime at New York on December 1. The Rockets swept the Bucks last season, while Houston has captured eight of the past 10 meetings since 2014.

Seeing Green

The Celtics (24-15 SU, 21-18 ATS) have picked things up at home since dropping back-to-back games at TD Garden to the Suns and Bucks in late December. Boston is in the midst of a five-game home winning streak, while trying to pull off a perfect 4-0 homestand. The latest victory for Brad Stevens? squad came in Monday?s 116-95 blowout of the unrested Nets as 10 ?-point favorites, as Boston has now covered the spread in 13 of 14 home wins this season.

Boston welcomes in Indiana to Beantown as the Pacers (27-13 SU, 21-19 ATS) continue their five-game road trip. Indiana has won seven of its past eight games overall, including last night?s 123-115 win at Cleveland. Unfortunately, the Pacers couldn?t hold onto a 22-point lead after the first quarter as the Cavaliers picked up the cover as 9 ?-point underdogs. Indiana has failed to cash in four consecutive games, while hitting the OVER in six straight contests. The Pacers seek their second win over the Celtics this season after edging Boston, 102-101 as 3 ?-point home underdogs in early November.

Tighten the Bootstraps

Following a shaky start, the Spurs (24-17 SU, 25-15-1 ATS) have caught fire and ascending towards the top of the Southwest division. San Antonio has covered seven consecutive games overall, while picking up wins in each of the past five trips to the court. The Spurs erased an early double-digit deficit in Monday?s 119-107 victory at Detroit as 2 ?-point favorites, led by a combined 51-point effort from DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge on 21-of-33 shooting from the floor.

The Spurs remain on the highway with a visit to Memphis as the two division rivals have split a pair of matchups in San Antonio. The Grizzlies (18-22 SU, 17-23 ATS) are going the wrong way at the moment by dropping six straight games, while riding a dreadful 1-9 ATS record in the past 10 contests. Memphis began the season with a 7-1 record at FedEx Forum, but the Grizzlies have slipped to 3-8 in the past 11 home contests.

Good to See You Again

The 76ers (27-14 SU, 20-21 ATS) overcame a slow start on Tuesday to rout the Wizards (16-25 SU, 16-25 ATS) as eight-point favorites, 132-115. Former Wichita State standout Landry Shamet knocked down eight three-pointers and scored 29 points off the bench for Philadelphia, who improved to 18-3 at home and 6-3 in the last nine matchups with Washington. However, the three losses have come at Capital One Arena since 2017 as the Sixers make the short trip to D.C. tonight for the back end of a home-and-home set.

Washington had covered four straight games prior to last night?s beatdown as the Wizards begin a tough six-game homestand that includes visits from Milwaukee, Toronto, and Golden State in the next two weeks. The Wizards have caught fire at home of late by winning eight of the past 10 games in the Nation?s Capital, including victories over the Clippers, Rockets, and Lakers. Washington has cashed in three of the past four opportunities as a home underdog with the only loss coming in overtime to Boston last month.

One of the league's best offenses

The Bucks and Rockets are both holding opponents under 110 points a game, but there has been a noticeable difference in terms of opponent shooting percentage. The Bucks rank first in this category holding opponents to 43.2 percent, while the Rockets have allowed opponents to shoot 47.2 percent from the floor.

On the offensive end, the Bucks average the highest points per game in the league with 117.6 and rank fifth in shooting percentage at 47.8. Look for Milwaukee to find success on the road and back their team total Over 113.

Emphasis on the defensive end of the floor

The Pacers have won 14 of their last 17 games and enter today?s game against the Celtics playing the tail end of a back-to-back. Boston has been on an impressive run of its own, winning five straight home contests and four of its last five games overall.

Defensively, both teams rank in the top three in opponent points per game with Indiana allowing 102.3 and Boston 105.3. Opponents are shooting 44.2 percent from the floor against both. With the Under hitting in 10 of the last 14 games between these two, and five of the last six at TD Garden, look for defense to reign supreme and back Under the game total of 213.5.

Two teams moving in opposite directions

The Spurs take on the Grizzlies at a great time when Memphis is on a six-game losing streak and have lost eight of their last 10. This game will be a rematch of Saturday's contest where the Spurs won 108-88. The Spurs' 37-point second quarter proved to be the difference.

With San Antonio winning seven of the last eight meetings between the two sides - and posting a 12-5 record playing on the road at Memphis - look for the Spurs to cover as 2.5-point road favorites.

Tough on power forwards

The Magic are in a difficult spot today as they travel to take on the Jazz as 9-point underdogs. Orlando has lost three straight games and six of its last seven contests on the road.
Utah have been particularly good defending opposing power forwards holding them to 20.5 points per game. In their first meeting, the Jazz held Orlando's Aaron Gordon to three of seven shooting for only eight points in 28 minutes. Look for similar results today and back Under Gordon's point total of 15.5.

King of the boards is in prime position

The Lakers have been one of the worst teams defending opposing centers allowing 25.8 and 17.8 rebounds per game. Today the Lakers host the Detroit Pistons.

This is an ideal spot for Pistons big man Andre Drummond who is averaging 14.2 field goal attempts and scoring 17.1 points per game. Drummond leads the league in total rebounds per game at 14.9 and has logged 10 or more in nine of the last 10 games. Take Drummond to capitalize off the good matchup and back Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 31.5.

Russell, Nets climb out of early hole to beat Hawks
January 9, 2019
By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and a season-high 21 rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks withstand a 42-point performance from James Harden and beat the Houston Rockets 116-109 on Wednesday night.

In a matchup of the two front-runners for MVP, Harden and his teammates were done in by a shooting slump late in the third quarter that spilled into the fourth and left them down by 15 points.

Milwaukee held a 13-point lead with about five minutes left before Houston used a 8-0 run, started by two 3-pointers from Harden, to cut it to 107-102. The Bucks got a layup from Eric Bledsoe before Harden scored the next four points to get Houston to 109-106 with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Antetokounmpo made one of two free throws to push Milwaukee's lead to four points with about 90 seconds left. Harden missed his third straight 3-pointer before Antetokounmpo added a layup on the other end to make it 112-106 with 40 seconds remaining.

Harden missed another 3 seconds later and the Bucks added four free throws down the stretch to secure the their seventh victory in eight games.

It was Harden's sixth 40-point outing in the last eight games and he has scored 30 or more points in 14 straight games, which is the longest streak since Tracy McGrady did it in 2003. Harden shot 6 of 16 on 3-pointers to give him at least five in the last 11 games.

NETS 115, HAWKS 100

NEW YORK (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 23 points, Ed Davis grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds, and Brooklyn climbed out of an early 19-point hole to beat Atlanta.

DeMarre Carroll added 17 points to help the Nets improve to 21-22 with their eighth victory in their last nine home games. They managed only 20 wins for the entire season just two years ago, but have engineered a big turnaround after a slow start to this season. On Wednesday, they did the same thing in the game.

They yielded 46 points in the first 15 minutes, then held the Hawks to 37 points over the next 25 minutes.

Joe Harris, back after a one-game absence with a sprained right ankle, scored 16 points, as did Spencer Dinwiddie.

John Collins had 30 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks, who may have run out of steam after their strong start while playing on the second straight night. Trae Young had 17 points and seven assists, and Jeremy Lin added 16 points.

WIZARDS 123, 76ERS 106

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 14 straight points in the fourth quarter and finished with 34 to help Washington beat Philadelphia for a split of the home-and-home set.

After Washington's 26-point third-quarter lead was cut to 12 in the fourth, Beal outscored Philadelphia 14-5 to make it 116-95 with 4:22 left. Beal was 6 of 11 from 3-point range and 13 of 21 overall from the field.

Otto Porter Jr. added 23 points, his most since returning from a quadriceps injury this month, and Trevor Ariza had 17.

Joel Embiid had 35 points and 14 rebounds for the 76ers. They committed 23 turnovers, and had a four-game winning streak end.

Jimmy Butler added 23 points, and Ben Simmons had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Philadelphia. A night after hitting more than half of its 31 attempts from beyond the arc, Philadelphia shot 8 of 27 from 3-point range, going 3 of 20 in the first three quarters.

CELTICS 135, PACERS 108

BOSTON (AP) - Marcus Morris had 22 points and eight rebounds, Jayson Tatum had 20 points and Boston routed Indiana.

Kyrie Irving had 12 points before sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Celtics put together their highest-scoring game this season to get their fourth straight win.

Jaylen Brown scored 22 points, Gordon Hayward had 14 and Daniel Theis added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Terry Rozier had 12 points and five assists.

Domantas Sabonis had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Pacers. They had won seven of eight.

PELICANS 140, CAVALIERS 124

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 38 points and 13 rebounds and New Orleans overcame a slow start to pull away from Cleveland for its third straight victory.

Cleveland has lost 11 in a row.

New Orleans rookie Frank Jackson had 19 points to set a season high for a second straight game off the bench. He had 17 in a win over Memphis on Monday night. Jrue Holiday added 18 points, and Julius Randle and Nikola Mirotic had 17 each.

Jordan Clarkson led Cleveland with 21 points.

GRIZZLIES 96, SPURS 86

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Marc Gasol had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Memphis Grizzlies snapped a six-game slide, beating San Antonio.

Mike Conley had 15 points and six assists for Memphis, and Jaren Jackson Jr. and JaMychal Green scored 12 points each.

Marco Belinelli and Bryn Forbes scored 14 points apiece for the Spurs, who ended a five-game winning streak. LaMarcus Aldridge and Patty Mills had 13 points each for San Antonio.

MAVERICKS 104, SUNS 94

DALLAS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored 30 points and Dallas ended a seven-game losing streak against Phoenix.

The 19-year-old rookie put the Mavericks ahead for good with a 3-pointer early in the second half before getting one of his five assists on a jump-pass from nearly half court out of a double team to DeAndre Jordan for a dunk as Dallas built its lead to nine going to the fourth quarter.

T.J. Warren scored 20 points for the Suns. Scoring leader Devin Booker missed the Kings game and was out again in Dallas with back spasms.

JAZZ 106, MAGIC 93

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell had 33 points and seven assists and Utah rallied to beat Orlando.

Joe Ingles added 16 points and seven assists, and Rudy Gobert had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Utah improved to 21-21, winning for the third time in four games.

Quote of the Day
?I saw some of the best leaders I?ve ever been around check out, because it was ridiculous. Our assistant head coach [Joe Vitt] was suspended for six weeks. We had a new D-coordinator in [Steve] Spagnuolo. His scheme didn?t fit our personnel at all, so we were the worst defense in NFL history. We tried to hold it together . . . but there was a point in the season where it?s just, like, everybody for themselves.?
Eagles? safety Malcolm Jenkins, on the 2012 Saints

Thursday?s quiz
In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, where did the Saints play most of their home games?

Wednesday?s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, where Kevin Costner plays GM of the Cleveland Browns, Denis Leary plays the Browns? head coach.

Tuesday?s quiz
Rams haven?t won a playoff game since January 8, 2005 when they beat Seattle 27-20; Marc Bulger was the Rams? quarterback that day.

***********************

Thursday?s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud??.

13) USC?s AD Lynn Swann is taking grief in Los Angeles over the Kliff Kingsbury fiasco, where the Trojans hired Kingsbury as their new OC, then 34 days later, watched Kingsbury run off to be head coach of the NFL?s Arizona Cardinals.

Had Swann waited until the eight NFL head coach openings were filled, he would?ve been spared the embarrassment of hiring a guy who didn?t want to be there. Now he has to hire another OC, and it is less than a month until Signing Day for recruits. Not good.

12) Kliff Kingsbury said couple of months ago that he would take Kyler Murray with the first pick in the draft, if he could. Well??..now he can, since Arizona has the first pick in the draft.

Would another team trade for Josh Rosen and open the door for that to happen?

11) Denver Broncos hired Bears? DC Vic Fangio as their new head coach, beating out Steelers? OL coach Mike Munchak- those two coaches were born about five miles apart near Scranton, PA.

10) Jets signed Adam Gase as coach; Gase went 23-26 as the Dolphins? coach, losing his only playoff game 30-12 at Pittsburgh in 2016. Gase went 5-1 against the Jets with Miami.

Everyone except Denver is anxious to sign offense-geared head coaches.

9) Tennessee Vols hired OC Jim Chaney away from Georgia; he will be Tennessee?s 4th OC the last four years- he was make $950,000 a year in Athens, so safe to say he got a hefty raise to move to Knoxville.

8) Cleveland Browns hired OC Freddie Kitchens as its new HC, based on his development of rookie QB Baker Mayfield. Most assistant coaches were fired, including DC Gregg Williams, who was interim coach when the Browns won five of their last seven games.

This is similar reasoning that Tampa Bay used a few years ago when Buccaneers fired HC Lovie Smith and promoted Dirk Koetter to HC, figuring that Koetter was instrumental in the development of QB Jameis Winston? how did that turn out for them?

Kitchens is the 6th former Alabama football player to become an NFL head coach, last one being Mike Riley with the Chargers.

7) Usually, sign-up for the Westgate SuperBook?s NFL handicapping contest starts in July; this year, they?re hoping to start signing people up on March 1. Over 3,000 people were in this year?s contest; the champ won over $1.4M.

6) New Mexico Lobos basketball player Corey Manigault is the nephew of playground legend Earl (the Goat) Manigault, a famous New York City ballplayer from a long time ago whose career was derailed by off-court issues.

5) Trivia you get from the movies: When Jesse Owens won the gold medal in the 200-meter sprint in the 1936 Olympics. he won by :00.4 seconds over a guy named Mack Robinson.

You may have heard of Mack?s younger brother, Jackie Robinson. Pretty good baseball player.

4) Saben Lee, who plays basketball for Vanderbilt, is the son of former Florida State/NFL running back Amp Lee, who played nine years in the NFL for four teams.

Amp Lee caught the last TD pass Joe Montana threw for the 49ers; later on, he won a Super Bowl ring with the 1999 Rams.

3) Milwaukee Brewers signed C Yasmani Grandal to a one-year contract for $18.25M.

2) Tuesday, four armed guards entered the New Orleans Saints? locker room, with Coach Sean Payton wheeling the Lombardi Trophy in, on top of $225k in cash.

Payton asked the team: ?Y?all want this??? Win 3 F?n games.?

The locker room erupted. $225k is each player?s Super Bowl bonus.

1) Last time Cowboys/Rams met in the playoffs was in January of ?86, when the Dieter Brock-led Rams shut Dallas out 20-0 in Anaheim. That was 20 days before current Rams? coach Sean McVay was born.

Dallas? OC Scott Linehan used to be the Rams? head coach.
Rams? DC Wade Phillips used to be the Cowboys? head coach.

Inside the Paint - Thursday
Chris David

Wild night in the NBA on Wednesday as favorites posted an 8-2 straight up and 7-3 against the spread record. While it appeared that the bettors riding the ?chalk? were smoking cigars at the end of the night, they certainly had to sweat for a full 48 minutes as plenty of big underdogs collapsed.

For those bettors playing the Hawks, Cavaliers or Magic ? please accept our apologies. All three of those teams held commanding leads but the trio was outscored by 23, 20 and 30 points respectively in the second-half. Total players watched the ?under? go 6-4.

Four games on the slate tonight, which includes the nationally televised double-header on TNT. Before we break down the games, check out the latest Win Total Update. It provides an informed look at which teams have surpassed the expectations of the oddsmakers so far and also shows you have underachieved.

Boston (25-15 SU, 22-18 ATS) at Miami (19-20 SU, 21-18 ATS)

Possible letdown game for Boston, who just blasted Indiana 135-108 as a 7 ?-point home favorite on Tuesday. Including that win, the Celtics have now won and covered four straight games with all of the outcomes coming by double digits.

BookMaker sent out Boston as a 1 ?-point road favorite on Wednesday and the number has been pushed up to -2 as of Thursday morning. Keep in mind that the Celtics have struggled on zero days rest this season, going 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS. Defensively, they haven?t been great (107.5 PPG) in the back-to-back spots and that lack of effort has helped the ?over? go 4-2.

Miami has been very tough to figure out this season and despite owning a losing record, the club still sits in first place of the Southeast Division and that group might be lucky to get one playoff bid this April.

The Heat enter this matchup off back-to-back losses, an embarrassing 24-point blowout (106-82) at Atlanta on Sunday and a close call (103-99) at home to Denver on Tuesday. Including those setbacks, the club is 4-4 in its last eight but all four wins came against teams below .500. Versus winning teams, Miami has struggled to a 5-8 mark this season but a couple of them came at home recently against Houston and Milwaukee. Again, tough to figure out which Heat team shows up.

Boston was a great bet on the road last season (28-13) but is just 10-10 away from home in this campaign. Fortunately for the Celtics, the Heat haven?t played well at home this season (9-12 SU, 9-12 ATS). However, it?s managed to produce decent numbers (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) when catching points at American Airlines Arena.

This will be the first encounter between the pair this season. In the 2017-18 slate, the Heat won and covered two of their three meetings with the Celtics only win coming in Miami. Prior to that run, the Heat has lost seven straight games to Boston, three of those setbacks coming at home.

The total opened 209 and caught some early steam, pushing the number to 212. The Celtics have leaned to the ?over? (25-15) this season and they?ve seen eight of their last 10 on the road cash to the high side.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 7:05 p.m. ET.

L.A. Clippers (24-16 SU, 24-16 ATS) at Denver (27-12 SU, 22-17 ATS)

This is a weird scheduling spot for the Clippers, who will break up a six-game homestand with a trip to Denver. The Nuggets are also in a dicey spot after playing a back-to-back set at Houston and Miami on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The pair already played two games at the Staples Center this season and they split those contests. Denver captured a 107-98 win in the season opener on Oct. 17 before Los Angeles avenged that setback with a 132-111 win on Dec. 22.

Oddsmakers sent out Denver -5 ? with a total of 226 for ?Round Three.? This is a tough matchup to figure out because both clubs have been solid for bettors yet they do appear to look like bullies on paper. The Clippers (15-5) and Nuggets (17-5) have both dominated teams below .500 this season, which isn?t a bad thing but it sets you up to be exposed against quality opponents.

Denver (16-3 SU, 13-6 ATS) has been very steady at the Pepsi Center and it has won its last 10 at this venue, while covering eight of those victories. The Clippers have stayed the course on the road (10-10 SU, 11-9 ATS) this season, but the ?bully? word appears again for me. Of those 10 wins, only three came against winning clubs ? Lakers (LeBron James out), Trail Blazers and Rockets (Chris Paul out).

Oklahoma City (25-15 SU, 22-18 ATS) at San Antonio (24-18 SU, 25-16-1 ATS)

This is the first game of a home-and-home series as the pair will meet again in Oklahoma City on Friday. Last night, San Antonio got stunned 96-86 at Memphis as a 2 ?-point favorite. The Grizzlies had been in terrible form (0-6 last 6) and the majority of bettors were riding San Antonio blindly. Prior to that loss, the Spurs had won and covered five straight games.

Knowing the Spurs haven?t dropped two straight losses since early December certainly gives you a confidence to back them on Thursday. While that?s a solid reason, looking at San Antonio?s recent form at home may have you running to the betting counter. Head coach Gregg Popovich and company have won and covered six straight and 11 of their last 12 games at the AT&T Center. What?s really amazing about the run for the Spurs is that the lone loss came to the Chicago Bulls (98-93) on Dec. 15.

BookMaker opened the Spurs as one-point favorites but the line has flip-flopped and Oklahoma City is -1 ? as of Thursday morning. San Antonio was humbled last night in Memphis and playing on zero days rest (1-6 SU, 3-4 ATS) hasn?t worked out for the team this season.

The Thunder do enter this game off two straight losses, both coming at home and as large favorites to a pair of losing clubs in the Wizards (116-98) and Timberwolves (119-117). Oklahoma City has gone 12-9 both SU and ATS on the road this season and that includes a 5-2 run over its last seven away games.

Last season, the home team won all four of the meetings in this series. The Spurs went 3-1 ATS and the ?under? went 3-1 as well. Make a note that three of the four games were decided by four points or less.

Tip-off is slated for 9:35 p.m. ET and TNT will provide national coverage.

Detroit (17-22 SU, 17-21-1 ATS) at Sacramento (20-21 SU, 23-17-1 ATS)

For the late-night tip, Sacramento opened as a five-point home favorite over Detroit and it?s been solid in this role, going 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS. Going back to last season, the Kings have gone 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS in their last eight when laying points at home and the ?under? has gone 7-1 in those games.

As noted above, check out the Win Total Update and you?ll see how much of a surprise the Kings have been this season. They have come back to earth since Christmas, going 2-6 in their last eight games and they could easily be 1-7 if it wasn?t for a buzzer-beater victory over the Lakers.

They enter this game off a 115-111 loss at Phoenix on Tuesday and the offense fell apart in the second-half, scoring 39 total points after putting 72 on the board in the first 24 minutes. Dropping games to clubs below .500 hasn?t been common for Sacramento, who has helped itself with a 14-4 mark versus winning teams this season.

Fortunately for Sacramento, it will be playing another squad below .500 and a slumping one in Detroit, who lost its third straight game last night in a 113-100 result against the L.A. Lakers. After going 13-7 in the first 20 games of the season, everybody was ripping former coach Stan Van Gundy and praising new Detroit leader Dwane Casey. Sure enough, we?ve started to see the same squad from last season show up as they?ve gone 4-15 in their last 19 games.

Including the setback to L.A. yesterday, Detroit is now 5-6 SU and 6-5 ATS versus the Western Conference and that includes a 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS mark on the road. The Pistons haven?t faced many back-to-back situations but they?re a respectable 2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS, while the ?under? has gone 3-1.

Last season, Detroit won and covered both meetings against Sacramento which included a 106-90 win as a 3 ?-point road favorite.

The total (224 ?) seems a little high even though Sacramento remains the best ?over? bet (27-14) this season. At home, the high side is only 11-10 and Detroit has leaned to the ?under? (20-18-1) overall this season.

Loving that home court advantage

The Nuggets have been dominant at home all season posting a 16-3 record. Tonight Denver meets a Clippers team that is .500 on the road. When these two teams met three weeks ago it was the Clippers who defeated the Nuggets handily 132-111 to give both teams a win in the season series.

With the Nuggets averaging 112.8 points per game on their home court, and holding opponents to only 101.7, look for Denver to continue their dominance and cover as 5-point favorites at home.

Closely contested

The Spurs have also been a dominant team at home this season posting a 17-5 record. Today they host a Thunder team who have lost two straight outright as 10-point, and 8-point favorites.

With the Spurs winning four of the last five versus the Thunder, look for them to squeak out a win as 1.5-point underdogs versus a Thunder team struggling to get key defensive stops as of late.

Primed for a big night

Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan is having one of his best seasons ever averaging 22.3 points per game on 47.3 percent shooting. He is averaging 6.1 rebounds and 6.4 assists a game, and has logged 27 games with 20 or more points, five with 10 or more rebounds and three with 10 or more assists.

Today he is in a very favorable matchup versus a Thunder squad surrendering an average of 24 points a game and 5.2 assists to opposing shooting guards. Back DeRozan Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 34.5.

Focusing on defense

The Celtics travel to Miami fresh off a 135-108 route of the Pacers last night. The Celtics scored 30 or more points in three straight quarters and shot 56.8 percent as a team against Indiana. They play a Heat team who has lost two straight and hold a 9-12 record this season on their home court.

Defensively, both teams rank in the top 10 in opponent points per game allowing under 106, and rank second and third in terms of opponent shooting percentage with the Heat at 43.9 and the Celtics 44.2. Look for both teams to place an emphasis on defense and force some tough shots. Take Under the total of 213.

Bounce back effort

The Pistons have struggled recently losing six of their last seven contests, but find themselves in a winnable game today versus the Kings. Detroit has won seven of their last 10 games against Sacramento. The Kings are surrendering an average of 116.4 points a game with opponents shooting 47.2 percent from the field.

Detroit?s Andre Drummond struggled last night shooting 2-12 from the floor, but is in an excellent spot today versus a Kings team surrendering 23.3 points on 57 percent shooting, and 19.2 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Take Drummond Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 33.5.

Nikola Jokic has triple-double, Nuggets beat Clippers
January 10, 2019
By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge scored a career-high 56 points and the San Antonio Spurs overcame Russell Westbrook's triple-double with 24 points, 24 rebounds and 13 assists and outlasted the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 154-147 victory in double-overtime on Thursday night.

Aldridge had seven points in the second overtime and Derrick White added four points, a steal and a block of Jerami Grant at the rim with San Antonio up 148-144 with less than 2 minutes remaining. White finished with 23 points and Marco Belinelli made all five of his 3-point attempts while scoring 19 points for the Spurs, who have won seven straight at home.

San Antonio made its first 14 3-pointers to set a franchise record - but still needed two overtime periods to topple Oklahoma City.

Aldridge surpassed his previous career high of 45 points, which he set against Utah on March 23, 2018.

The Thunder lost their seventh straight in San Antonio despite Westbrook's huge game. Paul George scored 30 points and Grant added 25 points and 12 rebounds, but fouled out with 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime.

NUGGETS 121, CLIPPERS 100

DENVER (AP) - Nikola Jokic had 18 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his 21st career triple-double and the Nuggets extended their home winning streak to 11 with a victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Jamal Murray scored 23 points, and Mason Plumlee added a season-high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds for the Western Conference-leading Nuggets. They're 17-3 at home.

Lou Williams led the Clippers with 19 points, and Danilo Gallinari had 18 against his former team.

HEAT 115, CELTICS 99

MIAMI (AP) - Dwyane Wade scored 19 points, Josh Richardson added 18 and Miami connected on a season-high 18 3-pointers on the way to beating Boston.

Derrick Jones Jr. scored 14 points, and Justise Winslow finished with 13 points and a career-best 11 assists. Miami had 33 assists on 45 field goals.

Kyrie Irving had 22 points. for the Celtics. After scoring a season-high 135 points a night earlier in a home victory over Indiana, they were held under 100 for only the fourth time this season.

KINGS 112, PISTONS 102

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Buddy Hield scored 18 points, Willie Cauley-Stein had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and the Kings beat the Detroit Pistons with Blake Griffin out for rest.

Iman Shumpert had 13 points and De'Aaron Fox had 12 points and six assists for the Kings, who had lost five of six.

Stanley Johnson had 16 points off the bench, Reggie Bullock added 15 points and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four straight and 9 of 11.

Griffin, Detroit's scoring leader, got the night off after playing 37 minutes Wednesday night in a 113-100 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers. He did not have a rebound in that game, the first time that had happened in his eight-year pro career.

Quote of the Day
?We?ll look at all the options. We?re not going to release him, that?s not on the table. But I will say all other options are on the table. Whether the situation can be reconciled and [we] have him back on the team next year, we?re a long way from thinking that can happen. We?re not closing the door on anything at this point.?
Steelers? president Art Rooney II, talking about Antonio Brown

*************************

Friday?s List of 13: Basketball notes from this week??

13) Marquette 106, Creighton 104 OT? Bluejays totally butchered game management at end of regulation; they had ball out of bounds with 0:00.8 left, up 3 points- they throw the ball the length of the court, but it goes out of bounds without being touched, then Marquette drains a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to force OT.

All they had to do was flip the ball to a Marquette player inside the arc and the game was over, but thats not what happened.

Marquette?s Markus Howard scored 53 points, most ever in a Big East game; he nailed 10-14 treys, 13-15 on foul line. Horrific home loss for Creighton.

12) Virginia Tech 52, Georgia Tech 49? Look at this score, then you remember that Markus Howard scored 53 by himself at Creighton. Different styles of play, for sure.

11) UCLA 87, Oregon 84 OT? Staggering collapse by the Ducks, who led 76-68 with 0:44 left in regulation- it was 72-59 with 2:30 left. Bruins are 3-0 under interim coach Murry Bartow.

10) Villanova 76, St John?s 71? Red Storm led by 13 early, by 5 with 3:48 left, but faded badly down stretch and lost for second time in four Big East games. Villanova ended the game on a decisive 14-4 run.

Sign of times; there were 67 3-pointers taken in this game, 48 2-pointers, 30 foul shots. Red Storm basically played only six guys (a 7th guy played 5:00). 67 possessions; slow tempo, lot of jump shots late in the shot clock.

9) Hofstra 93, William & Mary 90, 3OT?Visiting Pride led by 10 at the half, survived in triple OT? four Hofstra kids played 42:00+, with Wright-Foreman playing whole 55:00. Four guys on W&M played 44:00.

Bad beat of the night: Northeastern (-9) won/covered 81-70 at Elon, but in OT. If you have the underdog +9 and the game goes overtime, you?re supposed to win.

8) ESPN has obviously told his game analysts to hype up Zion Williamson at every chance, the way they did with Trey Young LY and Ben Simmons the year he was at LSU.

Williamson doesn?t need the hype, he is really good, but ESPN has this new thing where they seem to choose one player a year and they hype him up so much that you wind up rooting against him.

7) Warriors 122, Knicks 95? Klay Thompson scored 43 points for the Warriors Tuesday, on 29 shots. On the 29 touches where he shot, Thompson dribbled a total of four times. Four.

6) Pitt 89, Louisville 86 OT? Panthers end a 23-game ACC regular season losing streak. Jeff Capel has Pitt heading in the right direction, and he?s done it quickly.

5) Eastern Michigan 84, Ball State 82, 2OT? Ball?s Trey Moses had 16 points, 10 assists, but he was 4-15 on the foul line in a game the Cardinals led by 3 in the last minute of regulation. Tough way to lose; Ball State was 15-30 on foul line in a 2-point loss.

4) Ole Miss 82, Auburn 67? Rebels outscored Auburn 27-9 on foul line, never trailed in moving to 12-2 under new coach Kermit Davis, who built a mid-major power at Middle Tennessee the last few years.

3) Quinnipiac 89, Monmouth 83, 2OT? Bobcats led 63-49 with 1:36 to play, blew the lead, as Monmouth somehow scored 34 points in last 11:36 of this game, but still lost. Quinnipiac was -8 (22-14) in turnovers, but still got the win.

2) Kansas State 71, West Virginia 69? Wildcats trailed 20-3 early, by 21 with 17:46 left, but rallied to hand the Mountaineers their third straight Big X loss. West Virginia is 0-3 in its conference for first time since an 0-6 start in the ?02 Big East.

1) There were 32 games in the Las Vegas rotation Wednesday night; in 8 of the 32 games, the team that lost had a lead of 10+ points at some point in the game; five of those teams led by 14+ points at one point. Lot of runs/droughts in college games these days.
