Inside the Paint - Tuesday
Chris David

Game of the Night (TNT, 8:05 p.m. ET)
Houston (47-27 SU, 34-37-3 ATS) at Milwaukee (55-19 SU, 44-28-2 ATS)

There haven?t been many exciting games to watch in the NBA lately but that changes on Tuesday when the Bucks and Rockets square off in a possible preview of this year?s NBA Finals. Adding intrigue to the matchup will be the additional showdown between the leaders for the league?s Most Valuable Player award ? Milwaukee?s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Houston?s James Harden.

NBA Expert Tony Mejia weighed in on the matchup between the two All-Stars.

Mejia said, "Giannis Antetokounmpo and James Harden will only get stuck defending one another on switches and shouldn?t have much interaction after exchanging pleasantries prior to tip-off, so this isn?t a winner-take-all between the top two MVP candidates. At this point, the award is Greek Freak?s to lose since the Bucks are going to finish with the league?s top record barring a collapse. Harden has had a tremendous impact on the Rockets, doing the heavy lifting when Chris Paul and Clint Capela were sidelined in order to make the Southwest Division title they?re likely to bring home possible.?

?Unfortunately, the Rockets are going to have their hands full finishing off a top-four finish out West, which combined with the fact he already won last year, should lead to Antetokounmpo receiving more first-place votes. Giannis is now -250 to win MVP per Westgate while Harden is available at +200, so this race doesn?t seem all that close as we head into the regular season?s final 10-game stretch. A Houston win where Harden scores 50 or 60 points would spark one final flurry of debates, but ultimately, once Game 82 is played and Milwaukee finishes with the league?s top record, Antetokounmpo will finish ahead of Harden on most final MVP ballots.?

As Mejia mentioned, the Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook believes the MVP is a two-horse race and the only other player available for this wager is Oklahoma City?s Paul George, who sits at 40/1 and that?s impressive considering he was once a 250/1 long shot.

For the matchup between the teams, Milwaukee is listed as a four-point home favorite and beating the Bucks at the Fiserv Forum hasn?t been an easy task this season (30-6 SU, 22-14 ATS).

Mejia explained his position on the pair, ?The Bucks are7-1 over their last eight home games, winning six of the games by at least 12 points to increase their league-leading margin of victory. The Rockets have won seven of eight road games, claiming Golden State, Boston, Toronto and most recently, New Orleans, among the victims. Their 14-2 run started with an upset in Oakland on Feb. 23, so they?ve been fantastic since getting healthy and will view this as another major test. The fact the Bucks won in Houston should be a motivating factor for the Rockets, who have beaten every team they?ve suffered a loss against this season with exception of the Clippers and this Milwaukee team they?ll be seeing for the second time.?

Milwaukee?s 116-109 at Houston on Jan. 9 as a 1 ?-point road favorite was a solid victory but the Rockets were without Chris Paul. For the rematch, it will be the Bucks playing short-handed as Malcolm Brogdon (heel) and Nikola Mirotic (hand) both remain ?out? for the team. Houston?s Eric Gordon (ankle) is ?questionable.?

Houston has won and covered four straight and five of its last six games as an underdog, which means a money-line (+150) ticket could be in play.

The aforementioned first meeting in January went ?under? (229 ?) and the total opened slightly lower at 227 for Tuesday. Houston (44.7) and Milwaukee (38.1) are ranked first and second respectively in 3-pointers attempted but both sit in the bottom half of the league in 3-point field goal percentage. While Milwaukee leads the league with 117.5 points per game, Houston is ranked 11th at 113.1 PPG and that?s a drop-off from last season when it was fourth.

We?re still seeing high totals with Houston and savvy bettors going against their past perception have taken advantage of a 13-4 ?under? record for the Rockets since the All-Star break. Milwaukee has watched the 'over' go 18-17-1 at home.

Tight in the East

The first four seeds in the Eastern Conference have been locked up and the Boston Celtics are inches away from becoming the fifth team to clinch. That leaves us with three spots and five teams have a chance to earn a trip to the postseason and four of them are in action on Tuesday.

Charlotte (34-39 SU, 33-38-2 ATS) vs. San Antonio

Just when we thought the Hornets were dead in the water, they?ve ripped off three straight wins and two of the victories came against a pair of contenders in the East ? Celtics and Raptors. Last Saturday?s 124-117 comeback victory over Boston as a four-point home underdog was very impressive but Sunday?s 115-114 buzzer beater win at Toronto on Sunday was definitely an eye-opener.

Fast forward to Tuesday and Charlotte has opened as a three-point home underdog to San Antonio, who is coming off a 115-96 road win over a short-handed Boston squad on Sunday. The Hornets did just but the Celtics as home ?dogs but they?ve struggled in this role (3-5 SU, 4-3-1 ATS) this season.

The Hornets surprised the Spurs 108-99 on Jan. 14 as 7 ?-point road underdogs. Prior to that upset, San Antonio had won four straight games in this series and that includes their last two trips to Charlotte.

Orlando (36-38 SU, 39-34-1 ATS) at Miami (36-37 SU, 40-33 ATS)

Big game in the Southeast Division tonight and oddsmakers opened the Heat as 5 ?-point home favorites over the Magic for the fourth and final meeting of the season between the pair. These teams haven?t squared off since late December but Orlando is 2-1 through the first three encounters, and that includes a 105-90 win at Miami on Dec. 4. Including that win, the Magic have won four of their last five trips to South Florida. Orlando posted a 119-98 win over Philadelphia on Monday, which was its fifth consecutive victory. Unfortunately for Steve Clifford?s team, they?ve been very inconsistent on no rest this season, going 5-8 SU and 6-6-1 ATS. On the road in those back-to-back spots, Orlando is just 1-6 SU and 3-4 ATS.

The Heat have gone 9-3 in March and they?re coming off an impressive 3-1 road trip that included solid wins over the Thunder and Spurs. After dropping its first two games at home after the All-Star break, the club has gone 6-2. Knowing a setback tonight would lose all playoff tiebreakers with the Magic, a sense of urgency should be high in Miami for this game.

Detroit (37-36 SU, 38-33-2 ATS) at Denver

The Pistons opened the second-half of the season with an 8-1 run and that certainly helped their playoff push because they?ve been a mess lately. Since then, the club is 3-5 and they?ll finish off a five-game road trip on Tuesday at Denver. Detroit blasted Denver 129-103 as a two-point underdog on Feb. 4 and the ?over? (209) was never in doubt. Fortunately for the Pistons, they catch the Nuggets in a tough scheduling spot. Denver is returning home from a four-game trip on the East Coast and then it heads on the road for a back-to-back set starting Thursday against the Rockets and Thunder. Denver is tied with Milwaukee with the best home record (30-6 SU, 23-13 ATS) and that includes an 11-2 record versus teams from the East. More importantly, the Nuggets have gone 9-4 ATS in those games.

Roll the Ball Out

There are three meaningless games in the Association on Tuesday and shootouts are expected in two of those contests.

Atlanta at New Orleans:
These teams played to a wild affair a couple weeks ago and Atlanta captured a 128-116 home win over New Orleans. The ?over? (238) connected and the total has been pushed up to 240 for the rematch. The Hawks have watched the ?over? cash in seven of their last 10 on the road and they?re style certainly fits a shootout on any day but can you trust the Pelicans to score? New Orleans has been held to 96 and 90 points in its last two games and the limited minutes of Anthony Davis doesn't help your handicapping. If you?re leaning high, a first-quarter ?over? wager seems more doable since AD will likely see 10 minutes early.

Sacramento at Dallas:
No overnight line was posted due to the ?questionable? status of Mavericks guard Luke Doncic. These teams just met on Mar. 21 and Sacramento earned a 116-100 win over Dallas and the ?under? (230) was never in doubt. The last two meetings in Texas both went ?over? as the Kings captured wins in each contest while scoring 120 and 114 points. Sacramento was once a great ?over? bet on the road but things have started to balance out. In 2019, the Kings have watched the ?under? go 11-4-1 in away games and the four ?over? tickets came against playoff teams. It's apparent that the club is only getting up for quality opponents and riding that angle might be the sound investment on Tuesday.

Washington at L.A. Lakers:
The Wizards blasted the Lakers 128-110 on Dec. 16 and the ?over? (231 ?) cashed in that contest. Washington point guard John Wall had 40 points and 14 assists in that game but he?s ?out? for the season due to injury. Los Angeles has been hit by the injury bug as well and with playoffs out of sight, the club has been playing out the string. They did just win on Sunday, a 111-106 home win over Sacramento, but we haven?t seen the Lakers capture back-to-back wins since mid-January. In the second-half of the season, L.A. has gone 0-4 after a win and the ?over? went 3-1 while the defense was diced up for 128.5 PPG in those setbacks.

Celtics finally at full strength

The Celtics have lost four straight games and have historically struggled playing on the road versus Cleveland winning only one of the last six. The Cavaliers have struggled all season long losing seven of the last 10 to put their record at 19-55.

In the head-to-head, the Cavs have shot the ball poorly averaging 41 percent shooting over their most recent three and have really struggled early on in games, being outscored by Boston 62-51 in the first half. Look for the Cavaliers early struggles to continue as they are the lowest scoring first half team in the Association. Back Boston on the first half spread of 2.5-points.

Figuring out their road troubles

San Antonio heads to Charlotte having won eight of their last 10 games, although they have been inconsistent on the road this season. They find themselves in a tightly contested Western Conference playoff race with three wins separating fourth from eighth.

The Hornets have beat some quality teams down the stretch, but without Nicolas Batum and Cody Zeller in the lineup, their offense might struggle. Back San Antonio on the money line as they have won 14 of the most recent 16 games versus Charlotte, and six of the last seven on the road in the head-to-head.

Underrated big man

The Hawks versus Pelicans game unsurprisingly has the highest game total of the night at 242. Both teams rank first and fifth in terms of possessions per game and love to push the pace. The Pelicans have surrendered an average of 119 points per game over their most recent three, and the Hawks have given up 120.7.

Atlanta's Dewayne Dedmon is in a favorable matchup against a Pelicans team surrendering 23.7 points on 55.1 percent shooting and 16.5 boards per game to opposing centers. Look for him to have an impact on both sides of the court, and back Over his points, rebounds, assists total Over 21.5.

Smooth Shooting Early

Houston has won 14 of its last 16 overall, and seven of the last eight on the road. Today the Rockets take on a Bucks squad who have only lost six times at home all year, but will be without Pau Gasol, Tony Snell, Nikola Mirotic and Malcolm Brogdon.

The Bucks rank second in the NBA in first-half points per game at home averaging 61.1. The Rockets have averaged 59.3 first-half points a game ranking them sixth. With Milwaukee shooting the ball super efficiently averaging 48.3 percent from the floor, and the Rockets 45.1 over their most recent three games, take the first-half game total Over 113.

Putting the D in Denver and Detroit

Both the Pistons and Nuggets rank in the top 10 in opponent points per game with Detroit allowing 108, and the Nuggets holding opponents to 104.8 on their home court.

The Under has cashed on 13 of the Nuggets' most recent 15 games, six of seven at home, and seven of the most recent nine in the head-to-head versus the Pistons. With the average score over the most recent 10 in the head-to-head 101-100 in favor of Detroit, back the game total Under 211 as defense should be a priority.

Clips top T'Wolves to clinch playoff berth
March 26, 2019
By The Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Danilo Gallinari scored 25 points and the Los Angeles Clippers clinched a playoff spot Tuesday night with a 122-111 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Coach Doc Rivers' club is back in the postseason after falling short last year. Los Angeles finished 42-40 last season, missing the playoffs after making it six straight years - four under Rivers.

The Clippers (45-30) became the fifth Western Conference team to secure a postseason berth.

Lou Williams added 20 points off the bench for the Clippers, who outscored Minnesota's reserves 53-25.

The Clippers have won six in a row, the longest active streak in the NBA, and 10 of 11 overall.

Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

BUCKS 108, ROCKETS 94

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Eric Bledsoe scored 23 points, including 16 in the decisive third quarter as Milwaukee topped Houston.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Bucks, who improved to an NBA-best 56-19.

James Harden scored 23 and Chris Paul 19 for the Rockets, who lost for just the third time in 17 games. Harden shot 9 of 26, including 1 for 9 from 3-point range with Bledsoe closely guarding him throughout most of the game.

MAGIC 104, HEAT 99

MIAMI (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 24 points and 16 rebounds, Jonathan Issac added 19 points and Orlando extended its longest winning streak in eight years to six games by downing Miami.

D.J. Augustin scored 17 points and Aaron Gordon finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic (37-38), who won the season series 3-1 and moved past the Heat (36-38) into eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Evan Fournier added 11 points for Orlando, which hadn't had a winning streak this long since January 2011.

Dion Waiters scored 26 for the Heat, who lost on the night they retired Chris Bosh's No. 1 jersey and raised it to the rafters during a halftime ceremony. Dwyane Wade had 22 points.

CELTICS 116, CAVALIERS 106

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart each scored 21 points, and Boston broke away from a fourth-quarter tie to defeat Cleveland.

Kyrie Irving (rest) didn't play for Boston, but the Celtics snapped a four-game losing streak and are 11-2 without their leading scorer.

Al Horford had 19 points, including eight in the fourth quarter and the go-ahead layup early in the period.

The Celtics ended the game with a 24-14 run also sparked by three-point plays from Smart and Marcus Morris to pull away.

Collin Sexton led the Cavaliers with 24 points.

The Celtics' slide dropped them to fifth in the Eastern Conference with seven games to play in the regular season.

HORNETS 125, SPURS 116, OT

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 11 of his 38 points in overtime and Charlotte outlasted San Antonio to stretch its longest winning streak of the season to four games.

Walker took over in the extra period, scoring Charlotte's first seven points and going 4 of 4 from the field, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers. He barely missed his third career triple-double, finishing with 11 assists and nine rebounds.

It was Charlotte's first overtime win this season in five tries.

Dwayne Bacon established a career high for the second straight game, pouring in 24 points with four 3-pointers. Frank Kaminsky added 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for the Hornets, who are chasing Orlando and Miami for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

DeMar DeRozan had 30 points to lead the Spurs, but missed a jumper at the end of regulation that would have won the game. LaMarcus Aldridge had 20 points and 15 rebounds.

RAPTORS 112, BULLS 103

TORONTO (AP) - Norman Powell scored 20 points, Serge Ibaka had 16 and Toronto beat struggling Chicago for the eighth consecutive time.

Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry each added 14 points before sitting out the final quarter, and Pascal Siakam had 13. The Raptors never trailed and avoided their first three-game home losing streak of the season. Toronto lost to Charlotte on Sunday on a halfcourt buzzer-beater by Jeremy Lamb.

Wayne Selden scored 20 points as the Bulls lost for the seventh time in nine games. Chicago was without leading scorer Zach LaVine (bruised right thigh, right knee tendinitis) for the third straight game while forward Otto Porter Jr. (strained right rotator cuff) missed his fourth in a row.

NUGGETS 95, PISTONS 92

DENVER (AP) - Jamal Murray scored 33 points, including six in the final minute, and Denver held off Detroit after nearly squandering a 27-point lead.

Trailing 66-39 at halftime, the Pistons cut it to one on a 3-pointer by Reggie Jackson with 11.2 seconds remaining before Murray hit a pair of free throws. Blake Griffin's last-gasp 3-point attempt bounded away.

At 50-23, the Nuggets moved into a tie with Golden State for the top spot in the Western Conference. It's the first 50-win season for Denver since the 2012-13 squad went 57-25.

Nikola Jokic finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds for his 51st double-double this season.

Griffin had 29 points and 15 rebounds for the playoff-chasing Pistons, who finished a 1-4 road trip. Andre Drummond had 13 points and 18 rebounds before fouling out.

KINGS 125, MAVERICKS 121

DALLAS (AP) - De'Aaron Fox scored 23 points, including a crucial basket to help Sacramento stay in front in the final minute against Dallas.

With the Kings leading by two, Fox drove and missed a layup but got his own rebound and tried again. The second attempt went in for a 121-117 lead with 26 seconds remaining, and the Kings finished 3-0 against Mavericks to sweep the season series for the first time since 1997-98.

Dallas rookie sensation Luka Doncic tied Magic Johnson with his seventh triple-double in his first season, getting 28 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. It's the third-most triple-doubles by a rookie. Dwight Powell had 21 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.

Harrison Barnes scored 18 points in his first appearance in Dallas since the Mavericks traded him to Sacramento while he was playing in a game Feb. 6. Buddy Hield scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer to put the Kings ahead for good with 1:07 remaining.

HAWKS 130, PELICANS 120

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Rookie guard Trae Young had 33 points and 12 assists for his 24th double-double of the season, leading Atlanta past New Orleans.

Young finished 12 of 24 from the field, including 5 for 12 from 3-point range, and had one turnover in 31 minutes.

DeAndre' Bembry and Dewayne Dedmon each scored 18 points, and the Hawks shot 19 for 51 from beyond the arc to win their third straight.

Julius Randle led the Pelicans with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Already playing without Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday, the Pelicans' lineup got thinner when guard Frank Jackson, who scored 20 points in 25 minutes, went to the locker room with a concussion with 7:19 left in the third quarter. He was inadvertently hit in the forehead by John Collins under the basket.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the college basketball national title:

2-1? Duke

7-2? Gonzaga, Virginia

4-1? North Carolina

10-1? Michigan

12-1? Michigan State

18-1? Kentucky, Tennessee

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) Bad news for the Arizona Diamondbacks; Steven Souza Jr. has an ACL tear, LCL tear, partial PCL tear, and posterior lateral capsule tear in his left knee. He is done for this season.

12) Milwaukee?s Mike Moustakas led off the bottom of the 2nd vs Toronto Tuesday by bunting to third base for an easy hit against the shift. What pitcher will be the first one to snap over giving up hits to batters who are smart enough to just bunt the ball where no one is?

You know some pitchers have to hate the shift, especially when it doesn?t help them.

11) Dodgers shifted against Angels? 2B David Fletcher early Monday night, but he just poked a grounder thru the right side for an easy hit. Fletcher has no power, but he does control the bat well; it is bleeping stupid to over-shift against him. This is analytics gone wild.

10) Random stat of the day; in his last 11 NCAA tournament games, Rick Barnes? teams are 1-9-1 against the spread. Since 2002, Barnes is 3-2 SU in Sweet 16 games; his last one was in 2008.

9) Bruce Pearl?s comment about his Auburn team playing North Carolina this week:

?Take the over.?

Over in this game is 164, which is pretty steep.

8) Coaching carousel:
? BYU told coach Dave Rose to take a hike after 14 years with the Cougars.
? Arkansas fired coach Mike Anderson after eight years.
? Nebraska fired Tim Miles; his likely replacement is Fred Hoiberg.
? Washington State hired San Francisco coach Kyle Smith.
? Cal Poly hired former Riverside CC coach/Fullerton assistant John Smith.
? UMKC hired former Wright State coach Billy Donlon.
? Mercer is going to hire Purdue assistant Greg Gary.
? Former Tex-Arlington coach Scott Cross is back in Sun Belt; he is the new coach at Troy.

7) That means four of 14 SEC coaching jobs are open; considering that seven SEC teams made the NCAA?s, then South Carolina, Georgia, Missouri are only teams not to make NCAA?s that didn?t fire their coach. Georgia?s coach has been there one year, Missouri?s two years.

6) One thing that bugs me about the NBA; why does the team?s star always HAVE TO take the last shot? Portland had the ball at the end of the first OT Monday night in a tie game and the Nets double-teamed Damian Lillard and he never passed the ball, taking a 35-footer. Why?

5) Watched Dodgers-Angels exhibition game Monday night and it is weird watching the Angels and seeing someone other than Mike Scioscia managing the team.

4) Guy in Ohio named Gregg Nigl has a perfect bracket thru the first two rounds, so he deserves to be congratulated. Well done sir!!!

3) Jason deGrom signed a 5-year, $137,5M extension with the Mets.

2) Portland C Jusuf Nurkic suffered a compound fractures to the tibia and fibula of his lower left leg in the second OT of the Nets-Blazers game Monday night. The injury was so gruesome, guys on the Nets who were near Nurkic when he fell ran away from the area.

1) Some day soon, when they make a movie about Michael Avenatti and the last year or so of his life, it is going to be a weird and fast-moving story. Avenatti has been all over TV for the last year or so, but now he is in big legal trouble in California, charged with wire fraud and extortion.

Just seems like sometimes people get famous quickly and the fame is addictive and it makes them do nutty things. Being obscure isn?t such a bad thing.

Game of the Night: Pacers at Thunder (-6, 216) ? 8:05 PM EST

Two teams not playing their best basketball of late hook up in Oklahoma City in a critical game for playoff seeding. Indiana (45-29 SU, 37-37 ATS) snapped a four-game skid in Sunday?s 124-88 home blowout of Denver as 1 ?-point underdogs, aided by 35 points from Bojan Bogdanovic, as the swingman drilled five three-pointers. The Pacers improved to 10-2 the last 12 home contests, but Indiana has dropped eight consecutive games away from Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Oklahoma City (43-31 SU, 37-37 ATS) is skidding out of control at the wrong time as the Thunder are riding a 1-5 stretch since rallying past Brooklyn on March 13. The Thunder dropped three consecutive home games to the Warriors, Heat, and Raptors before beating Toronto on the second of a home-and-home last Friday, 116-109. The most recent defeat came at Memphis on Monday in a 115-103 setback as Russell Westbrook and Paul George combined to shoot 16-of-49 from the floor.

The Thunder have not been able to cash consistently at Chesapeake Energy Arena by posting a 1-7 ATS record the last eight opportunities at home. Oklahoma City is looking to avenge a 108-106 defeat at Indiana on March 14 as the Thunder squandered an 18-point third quarter lead. Wesley Matthews tipped in a miss at the buzzer to give Indiana its first win against Oklahoma City since February 2017, while the UNDER hit for the fourth straight time in the series.

Warriors at Grizzlies ? 8:05 PM EST

For the sixth consecutive season, Golden State (50-23 SU, 30-42-1 ATS) has reached the 50-win plateau. The two-time defending champions rebounded from their worst loss of the season in a 35-point blowout to the Mavericks by beating Detroit on Sunday, 121-114. The Warriors failed to cash as 10-point favorites, but Stephen Curry returned to the lineup after a one-game absence to score 26 points, while Golden State shot a scorching 62% from the floor.

Golden State is making its first trip to Memphis since October 2017 as the last four matchups in this series have come at Oracle Arena. The Warriors captured the first two meetings with the Grizzlies (30-44 SU, 35-39 ATS) in Oakland by 16 and 17 points, while cashing each time as double-digit favorites. The last time Golden State invaded FedEx Forum 17 months ago, both Curry and Kevin Durant were ejected late in a 111-101 loss as 8 ?-point favorites.

The Grizzlies knocked off Durant?s former team in blowout fashion in Monday?s 115-103 triumph as 7 ?-point underdogs. Memphis improved to 5-1 the last six games at FedEx Forum, which includes victories over Western Conference heavyweights Houston, Utah, and Portland. The Grizzlies haven?t backed down in the role of an underdog by covering in nine of their last 10 opportunities, while going 10-1 ATS the last 11 as a home ?dog.

Blazers at Bulls ? 8:05 PM EST

Three teams embark on cross-country road trips late in the season as Portland (46-27 SU, 40-32-1 ATS) hits the road for four games, starting in Chicago. The Blazers have won seven of their last eight games, while sweeping a four-game homestand, capped off by a double-overtime victory over the Nets on Monday. Portland outlasted Brooklyn, 148-144, but lost big man Jusuf Nurkic to a gruesome leg injury which will sideline him for the rest of the season.

The Bulls (21-53 SU, 33-40-1 ATS) own a dreadful 9-28 record at United Center, which includes a 31-point drubbing at the hands of the Jazz on Saturday. Utah built a 70-36 halftime edge and never looked back as the Bulls played without leading scorer Zach LaVine, as he is sidelined with a thigh injury. Since the Bulls shocked the Thunder in early December, Chicago has lost six of its past seven home games against Western Conference opponents.

Portland has captured the past four matchups with Chicago dating back to December 2016, including a 124-112 home victory in January. All four of those games sailed OVER the total, as the Blazers scored exactly 124 points in each of the previous three meetings.

Wizards at Suns ? 10:05 PM EST

Phoenix (17-58 SU, 34-41 ATS) begin a five-game homestand with the first three opponents all owning losing records. The Suns were rolled by the Jazz on Monday, 125-92 as 14-point underdogs, in spite of Devin Booker posting a 59-point performance. Booker finished 19-of-34 from the floor, including hitting five three-pointers and converting 16 free throws. In all three losses to Utah this season, the Suns were limited to 97 points or less and each game was decided by double-digits.

The Wizards (30-45 SU, 35-40 ATS) head to the Valley with no rest following Tuesday?s loss to the Lakers. Washington has performed well on the second end of a back-to-back this season by compiling a 9-5 SU and 11-3 ATS record, while going 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in the last three opportunities on the road.

Six of the last seven meetings in the series have been claimed by the Wizards, including a 149-146 home triumph in three overtimes back in late December. Bradley Beal paced Washington with 40 points, while Thomas Bryant knocked down all 14 of his field goal attempts for 31 points. The Wizards have won three straight matchups in Phoenix, including a 109-99 victory in December 2017.

Lakers at Jazz ? 10:35 PM EST

Utah (44-30 SU, 40-32-2 ATS) is taking advantage of a soft schedule down the stretch by winning seven of eight, while beating only one team owning a winning record (Brooklyn). The latest victory for the Jazz came in Monday?s 33-point rout of the Suns, marking the second straight win for Utah by at least 30 points. In each of the past eight wins for the Jazz, Utah has managed covers, including six ATS victories in this stretch as a favorite of eight points or more.

The Lakers (33-41 SU, 29-43-2 ATS) have dropped 20 of their last 27 games to fall out of playoff contention in the Western Conference. Los Angeles is 0-15 ATS in its past 15 losses as its last cover in a defeat came at Golden State in early February as a 14 ?-point underdog. The Lakers have been nearly an automatic UNDER play on no rest this season by cashing the UNDER in nine of 10 opportunities on the second of a back-to-back following Tuesday?s victory against Washington.

The home team has won each of the first two meetings as the Jazz cruised past the Lakers in Salt Lake City back in January, 113-95 as 8 ?-point favorites. Utah owns an 8-1 record in the last nine games against L.A. since the start of the 2016-17 season, while capturing the past seven matchups at Vivint Smart Home Arena.

Warriors beat Grizzlies to break tie with Nuggets in West
March 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant each scored 28 points, with Durant going 12 of 13 from the field, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Memphis Grizzlies 118-103 on Wednesday night to take sole possession of the Western Conference lead.

Curry also had 10 rebounds, and DeMarcus Cousins added 16 points and nine rebounds to help the Warriors break a tie with idle Denver for the top spot in the West.

Jonas Valanciunas led Memphis with 27 points and 13 rebounds, and Mike Conley added 22 points to take the franchise's career scoring lead and added eight assists. Bruno Caboclo had 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Durant scored seven straight points in a 9-0 run that made it 100-92 midway through the fourth quarter.

THUNDER 107, PACERS 99

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Paul George scored 31 points against his former team, and Oklahoma City had a 24-0 run in the third quarter to pull away from Indiana.

Steven Adams had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Russell Westbrook added 17 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his 29th triple-double of the season. The Thunder won for only the second time in seven games.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 28 points for Indiana, and Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

TRAIL BLAZERS 118, BULLS 98

CHICAGO (AP) - Seth Curry scored a season-high 20 points and Portland beat Chicago.

Still shaken by Jusuf Nurkic's gruesome leg injury two nights earlier in a double-overtime victory over Brooklyn that secured Portland's sixth straight playoff appearance, the Trail Blazers won their fifth in a row even though Damian Lillard scored a season-low 11.

Chicago's Shaquille Harrison set career highs with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

WIZARDS 124, SUNS 121

JAZZ 115, LAKERS 100

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the college basketball national title:

2-1? Duke

7-2? Gonzaga, Virginia

4-1? North Carolina

10-1? Michigan

12-1? Michigan State

18-1? Kentucky, Tennessee

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Happy Opening Day, everyone!!!!

13) So far this spring. UNLV fired Marvin Menzies and Vanderbilt fired Bryce Drew, both after their third season at that school, after seasons where their best player didn?t play after Christmas. Here are the details:

? Menzies was 48-52 in three years at UNLV, 23-31 in Mountain West.
? Drew was 40-59 in three years at Vanderbilt, 16-38 in SEC.

By way of comparison, here is how another coach did in his first three years at his current job:

? Unnamed coach: 38-47 at School A, 13-29 in conference games.

In other words, if Duke had hired Mike Krzyzewski three years ago, he?d be fired by now.

12) A person who has money to burn bet $500 on the Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series this year at 1,000-1 odds. Orioles were 47-115 last year, so good luck with that.

11) How is it Opening Day and Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel are still free agents?

10) Coaching carousel:
? Alabama hired hoop coach Nate Oats, who 13 days ago signed an extension with Buffalo.
? Stetson hired former UCF head coach Donnie Jones.
? UNLV hired South Dakota State coach TJ Otzenberger.
? Jackrabbits then replaced Otzenberger with assistant coach Eric Henderson
? San Francisco promoted assistant Todd Golden to replace Kyle Smith as HC.

9) Alabama guards John Petty, Kira Lewis, Jr. and Dazon Ingram all announced that they?re transferring out of Alabama?s program; this was before the Crimson Tide hired Oats.

8) Eight different major league teams used a 4-man outfield at least once LY, all against left-handed hitters. Hitters that saw it the most? Lucas Duda and Joey Gallo (7 games). Overall, hitters were 10-37 (.270) when the defense had four OF?s.

7) Last year, 42 different major league players played 5+ different positions.

6) Random golf stat: 2018 European Ryder Cup golf team went 11-1 Thursday in the Match Play tournament in Texas. The guys on the American team went 4-5-2 (Rickie Fowler isn?t playing this week).

5) Teams with best win %age in Sweet 16 games (minimum 12 games):
? Michigan 13-3, last in 2018
? Oklahoma State 11-3, last in 2005
? North Carolina 27-8, last in 2017

? Kentucky 36-12, last in 2-18

4) Charlotte Hornets were 2-0 against the Spurs this season, first time they swept the season series with San Antonio since 1996-97.

3) Oakland A?s traded minor league IF Jesus Lopez, international signing bonus pool space to Toronto for 1B/DH Kendrys Morales.

2) Fernando Tatis Jr. will be 20 years, 85 days old on Opening Day; if he plays, he will be the youngest player to play on Opening Day since Adrian Beltre in 1999.

1) Today is Opening Day in baseball, always a day full of optimism- if you can?t be optimistic when you?re 0-0, when can you be? Not every team has realistic hopes of making the playoffs this year, but you never know. At this time last year, I had zero hope of the A?s making the playoffs, but they wound up winning 97 games!!! Enjoy the season.

Thursday's Essentials
Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Denver at Houston (-5, 218), 8:05 ET, NBA TV

The Rockets? loss in Milwaukee was disappointing for much more than the perception it might cost James Harden the MVP trophy. He likely wasn?t going to get enough first-place votes as it is, but shooting 1-for-9 from 3-point range as Giannis Antetokounmpo?s Bucks wrapped up a season sweep probably swung anyone on the fence. Houston matched its second-lowest point total of 2019 in a 108-94 loss that helped knock it down to fourth in the Western Conference when combined with Portland?s easy win in Chicago on Wednesday.

Denver is running second in the West despite nearly blowing a 27-point lead against Detroit, holding on for a 95-92 result that clinched its first 50-win season since 2013. The Nuggets are in the midst of a stretch that has them playing six of seven on the road, wrapping it up with another tough test in Oklahoma City on Friday. Of the nine games they?ve got left, seven will be against playoff teams, which makes surpassing Golden State for the West?s top record and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs unlikely.

These teams would love nothing more than to see one another in the Western Conference semifinals, the earliest they?re likely to meet, because it means they would be avoiding the Warriors until a potential conference finals. The Nuggets are 3.5 games up on the Trail Blazers but considering their tough remaining schedule and the fact they still have to go through Portland on April 7, nothing is a given.

Denver has won seven of eight but has failed to top the 100-point mark in consecutive games for the first time this season. Worse yet, nearly blowing a huge lead against Detroit was another example of the Nuggets coasting home and failing to display killer instinct. They?ve covered in only two of their last six wins and are just 3-8 in their last 11 games as an underdog, which they?ll be tonight at the Toyota Center. Although they share the NBA?s top home record with Milwaukee, the Nuggets are a rather ordinary 19-17 outside of Colorado. Following Tuesday?s win, head coach Mike Malone said ?I never know which team is going to be out there from quarter to quarter.?

The Rockets have to capitalize on Denver?s erratic form if they?re going to have any chance to pass them down the line since a victory here would be worth two games considering it would clinch a 3-1 season series edge. James Harden is averaging 28 points per game through their first three meetings but hasn?t shot over 44 percent in any of the three games. The Nuggets won the most recent meeting between these teams 136-122 on Feb. 1 despite Harden hitting half of his 14 3-point attempts. After falling behind 43-35 following a fast-paced first quarter, the Nuggets outscored the Rockets 48-28 in the second quarter to take control.

Malik Beasley led the Nuggets with 35 points, hitting five 3-pointers in a start with both Jamal Murray and Gary Harris sidelined. Nikola Jokic had 31 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists and has averaged 23.0 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists against Houston, so any thoughts of an upset will have to start with him being more aggressive. Paul Millsap grabbed just one rebound in Denver?s most recent win over the Rockets and has racked up just four boards in the three games. He?s been playing his best basketball of late, averaging 14.0 points and 8.3 boards this month.

Houston scored 70 first-half points in its most recent win in this series, which has seen the last two meetings surpass the posted total after high-scoring opening halves. The ?under? is 11-2 in Rockets? games this month and has prevailed in 14 of the last 16 games involving Denver since action resumed after the All-Star break.

Beasley was away from the team for the birth of his first child and is questionable to return for this contest. The Rockets will be without Kenneth Faried (knee) and Gerald Green (groin), which means Danuel House should play major minutes and Iman Shumpert will continue to get time on the wing.

Best of the Rest

Brooklyn at Philadelphia, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Nets finally got back to the east coast after losing their 148-144 double-OT thriller in Portland on Monday and will conclude their seven-game road trip up the road in Philly in a potential playoff preview against the 76ers. The teams would meet as the 3-6 matchup in the Eastern Conference if the playoffs were to begin based on the current standings. Brooklyn snapped a three-game losing streak with its epic D?Angelo Russell-led comeback from 25 down in Sacramento and then went out and beat the Lakers, so a 2-4 run on this roadie has been respectable when you consider it lost at the buzzer to Lou Williams? Clippers and fell to the Blazers in another game where they displayed an ability to rally.

Kenny Atkinson?s team goes hard and won the most recent matchup between these teams at Wells Fargo Center 127-124 back on Dec. 12 behind Spencer Dinwiddie?s 39 points. Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 33 points and 17 rebounds. Ben Simmons is set to return from a stomach issue that kept him out against Orlando in a loss in which his team missed his play-making skills, failing to produce a field goal for nearly a quarter?s worth of action. Mike Scott (back) and James Ennis III (quad) might miss this contest, which would bump up Jonathon Simmons and Jonah Bolden in Brett Brown?s rotation. Brooklyn is going in search of a 3-1 series victory over Philly that would certainly fuel its confidence if the teams were to meet in the playoffs. Allen Crabbe (knee) is out again. The 76ers had a streak of five consecutive ?overs? snapped by Orlando and have seen their last two encounters with the Nets top the posted total.

Orlando at Detroit, 7:05 p.m. ET:
The Magic?s six-game winning streak is the team?s longest since 2011 and has them atop the Southeast Division and just one game behind the sixth-seeded Nets, who would do hold the tiebreaker if the teams wind up even. Orlando would leapfrog the Pistons with a win here and would tie the season series up, so it?s a huge game for both teams. Detroit has dropped three straight, closing their longest road trip of the season with four consecutive covers but just a 1-4 mark overall to fall back to .500 for the first time since March 3. This is the wrong time of year to be going backward and with the schedule over the next week featuring a home game against Portland a home-and-home with Indiana and a visit to Oklahoma City, the need to get back on track tonight makes this a must-win.

The Pistons have won nine consecutive games at Little Caesar?s Arena, last losing on Feb. 2. Andre Drummond is averaging 17 points and 18.7 rebounds against the Magic, while Orlando?s Nikola Vucevic is averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds against Detroit. Vooch made the All-Star team over Drummond and these two haven?t seen each other since, so the matchup in the middle figures to be serious. Orlando has been among the NBA?s stingiest teams since the All-Star break and have dominated on the boards, leading to a 12-3 run for the ?under? in their games.

Dallas at Miami, 7:35 p.m. ET:
The Heat lost to Orlando at home on Tuesday to slide out of the eighth spot in the East and only have home games against the Celtics and 76ers left after tonight, so losing again would really dampen hopes of a Dwyane Wade farewell ending in the postseason. Miami has won nine of 13 and hasn?t dropped consecutive games since just after the All-Star break, so it has been reliable over the past few weeks as Erik Spoelstra has found the right blend to make the most of a suddenly healthy roster. The Mavericks have scored 118 or more points in five of the last six games and followed up a huge blowout win at Golden State with a 125-121 loss in Sacramento. Luka Doncic?s knee looks like less of an issue than it did last week, so the Mavs are quite capable of playing spoiler.

The Heat could be without Josh Richardson (heel), who is listed as questionable, and won?t have Justise Winslow or Rodney McGruder. It?s ironic that Dirk Nowitzki will be in town for a game that Dwyane Wade badly needs in order to avoid an early retirement. He scored a game-high 22 points in Miami?s 112-101 win in Dallas on Feb. 13. The Heat have already clinched a losing home record by falling to 17-21 in the loss to the Magic, but the Mavs are the league?s second-worst road team, coming in 7-30.

L.A. Clippers at Milwaukee, 8:05 p.m. ET:
The Clippers celebrated making the playoffs by breaking out the champagne, so we?ll see how hard they partied after beating Minnesota on Tuesday night. This will be the first-ever visit to Fiserv Forum for all the Clippers except Landry Shamet, who saw a handful of minutes back on Oct. 24 when the 76ers lost in Milwaukee. He?s questionable with an ankle injury that kept him out of the win over the Timberwolves. Fellow starting guard Patrick Beverley is dealing with a hip pointer but intends to play, which means L.A. will have a healthier roster than their hosts, who won their third in a row on this current homestand against the Rockets on Tuesday.

Milwaukee will look to sweep the four-game stretch despite being without Malcolm Brogdon (heel), Nikola Mirotic (hand) and Tony Snell (ankle), all key members of Mike Budenholzer?s usual rotation. Pau Gasol (ankle) and rookie Donte DiVincenzo (foot) are also out, so Sterling Brown has joined the starting lineup, Pat Connaughton has taken over the sixth man role and Ersan Ilyasova, George Hill and D.J. Wilson round out the bench. Considering they?re facing the team with the NBA?s most productive bench, averaging a league-high 53 points per game, this could be a dangerous game for the team with the NBA?s best home record (31-6).
