Bucks beat Nets as Antetokounmpo returns to the lineup
April 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 28 points and 11 rebounds in his return to the lineup, Eric Bledsoe added 29 points and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Brooklyn Nets 131-121 on Monday night.

Reserve guard George Hill chipped in 22 points while Brook Lopez and Sterling Brown each scored 14 for the Bucks, who played without All-Star forward Khris Middleton because of soreness in his left groin.

Milwaukee was unable to clinch the best record in the Eastern Conference because Toronto won earlier Monday.

D'Angelo Russell had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets, who remained seventh in the East after losses by Detroit and Miami. Caris LeVert had 24 points off the bench.

CELTICS 110, HEAT 105

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving had 25 points, including a pair of key late free throws, and Boston held off Miami.

Al Horford added 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Celtics (46-32), who are trying to beat out the Indiana Pacers for the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference standings.

Goran Dragic led the Heat with 30 points. Bam Adebayo added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Dwyane Wade finished with 17 points and seven assists in his final regular-season game at TD Garden.

Miami (38-39) maintained its half-game lead over Orlando for the final playoff spot in the East after the Magic's 121-109 loss to Toronto.

RAPTORS 121, MAGIC 109

TORONTO (AP) - Danny Green scored a season-high 29 points, Kawhi Leonard and Serge Ibaka each had 15 and Toronto clinched its sixth Atlantic Division title by beating Orlando.

The win also means Toronto can finish no lower than second in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors began the day three games behind Milwaukee for first.

Marc Gasol scored 13 points and Kyle Lowry had 12 as the Raptors snapped a two-game losing streak against the Magic.

Nikola Vucevic had 13 points and 13 rebounds, but the Magic lost for the second time in three games after winning their previous six. Evan Fournier scored 21 points. Orlando remained a half-game behind Miami for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East

PACERS 111, PISTONS 102

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Thaddeus Young scored 19 points and Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and 12 rebounds to help Indiana snap a three-game losing streak with a victory over Detroit.

It was a crucial win for the Pacers, who had lost seven of their previous eight and their grip on potentially having home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Myles Turner chipped in with 17 points and five blocks.

Wayne Ellington scored a season-high 26 points and Andre Drummond had 18 points and 17 rebounds for the Pistons. Detroit is in the No. 6 spot with a 1 +-game lead over Orlando for the final playoff spot in the East.

JAZZ 111, HORNETS 102

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 23 points, Rudy Gobert had 18 points and 18 rebounds, and surging Utah overcame Kemba Walker's 47 points to beat Charlotte.

Gobert, who is second in the league with 62 double-doubles, controlled the paint as the Jazz built enough of a lead to withstand Walker, who scored 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Ricky Rubio added 20 points and 13 assists for the Jazz, who have won 10 of 11 and are two games back of Houston and Portland for the third and fourth slots in the Western Conference playoffs.

TRAIL BLAZERS 132, TIMBERWOLVES 122

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Evan Turner had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists off the bench, and Portland moved into a tie for third place in the Western Conference with a victory over Minnesota.

Rodney Hood led Portland with 21 points. Enes Kanter added 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Blazers, who joined the idle Houston Rockets at 49-28.

Andrew Wiggins had 21 points for Minnesota, while Gorgui Dieng scored 18 on 7-of-8 shooting.

MAVERICKS 122, 76ERS 102

DALLAS (AP) - Justin Jackson scored 16 of his 24 points in the third quarter and Dallas took advantage of a short-handed Philadelphia lineup.

Philadelphia went more than 10 minutes without a field goal spanning the second and third quarters. Dallas took advantage to build a 20-point lead early in the third and protected it from there.

Jackson, acquired on Feb. 6 from Sacramento, had his highest point total with Dallas. He led a balanced Mavericks effort as leading scorer Luka Doncic sat out his second straight game with a thigh contusion.

KNICKS 113, BULLS 105

NEW YORK (AP) - Luke Kornet scored a career-high 24 points and New York snapped a six-game losing streak.

Kevin Knox added 19 points, Damyean Dotson had 18 and Emmanuel Mudiay scored 17 for New York.

Robin Lopez led the Bulls with a season-high 29 points. JaKarr Sampson scored 22 and fellow reserve Ryan Arcidiacono had 14.

SUNS 122, CAVALIERS 113

PHOENIX (AP) - Devin Booker scored 25 points after two 50-point games and a 48-point night over the past three, and that was enough to lead Phoenix over Cleveland.

Booker sat more than eight minutes of the second quarter but had 13 assists. Josh Jackson had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Jamal Crawford added 19 points for the Suns.

The Suns ended a six-game losing streak while the Cavaliers lost their sixth straight. The teams have the NBA's second- and third-worst records: Phoenix at 18-60 and Cleveland at 19-59.

Collin Sexton scored 21 points and Jordan Clarkson added 20 for the Cavs. They played without star forward Kevin Love, who missed his second straight game with left shoulder soreness.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

? If you bet $100 on the Orioles in their first four games, you?d already be up $635.

? Tampa Bay (4-1) leads the Orioles (3-1) by a half-game atop the AL East.

? South Florida 63, DePaul 61? Bulls lead best-of-3 series, 1-0.

? Of the 17 NFL referees in 2014, only six of them still work in the NFL.

? Knicks 113, Bulls 105? Knicks cover as home favorite for 1st time since Nov. 7.

? Wonder how much it costs to open/close the roof at Marlins? Park?

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Being involved in fantasy baseball and handicapping baseball teaches you patience; it is a very long season. There is a tendency to overreact to stuff that happens in the first week of the season, but as the cliche goes, it is a marathon, not a sprint.

12) Go through this every year; baseball players get hurt.
? Giancarlo Stanton (biceps strain) goes on the IL.
? 3B Miguel Andujar (labrum tear in shoulder) also went on the IL.
? Rays put 3B Joey Wendle (hamstring) on IL.
? Toronto put P Clayton Richard (knee) on IL.

11) Cardinals 6, Pirates 5 (11)? Chris Archer threw five shutout innings, bullpen blew a 4-0 lead. Archer threw 99 pitches in those five innings. Pirates wound up using eight relievers over the last six innings.

10) Orioles 6, Blue Jays 5? David Hess threw 6.1 hitless innings (82 pitches), then was taken out of the game. Toronto quickly scored two runs; Orioles hung on for dear life.

9) Braves 8, Cubs 0? Chicago made five errors in first five innings of this game; they?ve lost the last three days, giving up 26 runs. Rough start to the season.

8) Mets 7, Marlins 3? Pete Alonso hit his first major league homer, a 440-foot blast, in front of 6,489 fans, most of whom were rooting for the visitors from New York.

7) Belmont basketball coach Rick Byrd is retiring after coaching the Bruins for 33 years. Byrd won 805 games and made NCAA tournament eight times.

Belmont led the country in 2-point FG% in five of the last seven seasons.

6) If you bet on AAF games, some info thru eight weeks:
? Favorites are 22-10 SU, 16-16 vs spread
? Home teams are 18-14 SU, 16-16 vs spread.
? Under is 18-13-1.

5) Red Sox signed SS Xander Bogaerts to a 7-year, $132M contract extension.

4) There is a new minor league team this year, the Amarillo Sod Poodles, AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Minor league nicknames are getting weirder and weirder.

3) Phillies had four sellouts all of last year; after three home games this season, they?ve already had three sellouts. Curious to see what kind of reaction Bryce Harper gets in Washington when the Phillies play there tonight.

2) Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper has laid off one-third of its staff. 20 years ago, the paper had 340 journalists; now it?s down to 33.

1. Normal field for a PGA Tour event is 144 golfers, but The Masters has a different set of requirements. Right now, only 86 players have qualified for next week?s tournament, which would be the smallest field at Augusta since 1997.

Inside the Paint - Tuesday
April 2, 2019
By Chris David

Game of the Night (TNT, 10:35 p.m. ET)
Denver (51-25 SU, 39-37 ATS) at Golden State (52-24 SU, 32-43-1 ATS)

The NBA has two weeks left in the regular season and the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference is still up for grab as the Nuggets and Warriors continue to battle for the top spot.

Golden State owns a one-game lead over Denver and a win at home on Tuesday would give Steve Kerr?s club the head-to-head tie-breaker in the season series. The Warriors have certainly cruised a lot this season and they?ve burned bettors along the way at times but the head coach appears to be focused on tonight's nationally televised contest.

"It?s a big game," Kerr said. "Nothing is as big as a playoff game, but it?s a big game in terms of the No. 1 seed and protecting our home court. We take care of our business and win tomorrow, we?re obviously in great shape down the stretch with the last 10 days of the season."

The Warriors opened as 7 ?-point home favorites at BookMaker.eu on Monday and the line has been pushed up to -8 at most betting shops. VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia weighs in on the possible preview of this year?s Western Conference Finals.

He said, ?The Warriors? killer instinct will be on trial tonight. Although Andre Iguodala rested instead of practicing on Monday and Kevin Durant and Quinn Cook flew back to Washington D.C. for a funeral, Steve Kerr will have everyone on the roster available to him besides backup Damian Jones so he?s going to be able to get a great look at what he can throw out there to best match up with the Nuggets in a potential conference finals. These teams won?t see each other before then, so Kerr should theoretically empty the barrel in an effort to lock in on homecourt advantage by going up two games and picking up a head-to-head tiebreaker with just five left to play. The Warriors lost the first meeting between these teams but have run right past them in both 2019 games, scoring 51 first-quarter points on Jan. 15 in Denver, shooting 60 percent while exposing how out of place Nikola Jokic can look against teams that can efficiently push pace.?

?The 142-11 rout came pre-DeMarcus Cousins, who was in the mix on March 8, starting and contributing as the Dubs used a 28-11 start to again pick up a wire-to-wire win. Cousins had six blocks in the 122-105 rout while Jokic slipped to a minus-50 over the last two games against Golden State. Denver hasn?t led for a single second in either game, so we?ll get to see if Mike Malone has figured anything out about how to better help Jokic get his bearings. Coming off a game where he was so frustrated with the officiating that he got himself ejected, this will be a great opportunity to see how resilient he and the Nuggets can be. If the Warriors come out looking to step on their throat, it will be much easier to justify them being a 4-to-9 favorite to win it all. If the Dubs come out flat for a game where they actually could lose something as significant as homecourt, I?d begin to consider them being vulnerable. Their 137-90 rout of Charlotte on Sunday was a good sign they?re locked in,? added Mejia.

Prior to those double-digit wins and covers by Golden State, the Nuggets have hung around in this series and they?re surprisingly very good versus the number but a lot of those lines have been inflated. Including the aforementioned 17-point loss recently on Mar. 19 from Oracle Arena, Denver is 1-7 in its last eight trips to Oakland. However, they?ve gone 5-2-1 ATS but the club was getting 10-plus points in six of those games and as high as 17 ?-points.

Denver?s 95-90 loss as a 10 ?-point home favorite to Washington on Sunday certainly looks alarming and only scoring 28 points in the second-half against a shoddy defensive club doesn?t look good. While that effort could be an anomaly, the Nuggets have now been held under 100 points in four of their last five games and that?s resulted in a 2-3 record. If you can?t break the century mark on Golden State, you shouldn?t even get off the bus.

Despite its solid overall record, Denver has been installed as an underdog 21 times this season and the team has gone 10-11 SU and 11-10 ATS in that role. Delving into those numbers further, the ?under? has gone 14-7 in those games and that includes a 6-1 run to the low side in the last seven.

The total for Tuesday opened 220 ? and has dropped to 219 ?, the lowest number posted in this year?s matchups. The drop-off makes sense as these two teams have been great ?under? bets in the second-half of the season. The Warriors have gone 14-5 to the low side while Denver is 16-3 to the ?under.?

Elsewhere?

Tuesday?s card has three other games on tap and all of them feature playoff teams versus non-playoff teams. As expected, the clubs headed to the postseason are healthy favorites.

L.A. Lakers at Oklahoma City: The Thunder are laying a big price (-13) and you could be scratching your head why the number is so high. OKC got tripped up in this role against the Lakers at home on Jan. 17 as Los Angeles captured a 138-128 upset as a 10-point road underdog. When you look at current form, backing L.A. looks even more tempting. The club has gone 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS in its last five games, the best ATS run of the season for the Lakers. Meanwhile, Oklahoma City has dropped two straight and seven of its last nine games. And backing the Thunder as double-digit home favorites this season hasn?t been profitable (7-4 SU, 4-7 ATS).

Atlanta at San Antonio: The Spurs (-10 ?) are also listed as double-digit home favorites tonight and they?ve gone 5-1 SU and 2-4 ATS in that role. The lone loss just occurred Sunday as they dropped a 113-106 decision to Sacramento as a 10 ?-point home favorite. Including that setback, the Spurs are 2-4 SU and 1-4-1 ATS in their last six games. While San Antonio has struggled lately, Atlanta continues to turn heads and Sunday?s 136-135 home win over Milwaukee was impressive. The Hawks have gone 4-1 both SU and ATS in their last five games. Since the All-Star break, Atlanta has gone 14-5 ATS and that includes a 5-1 mark for bettors away from home. San Antonio defeated the Hawks 111-104 as a 5 ?-point home favorite on Mar. 6. Fun historical fact - the Hawks haven?t won at San Antonio since 1997 when the Spurs had former Atlanta great Dominique Wilkins playing for them.

Houston at Sacramento: Quick rematch here as the pair just met on Saturday from the Toyota Center and the Rockets (-10) rallied past the Kings 119-108 as home favorites. For Tuesday, Houston opened as a five-point read favorite and it will be looking to complete a 4-0 season sweep of the Kings both SU and ATS. In the second-half, Houston has gone 7-3 on the road (5-4-1 ATS) while the Kings have gone 4-4 at home since the All-Star break but all four losses came to playoff teams while the wins were against teams with losing records.

It?s a big night in the Western Conference in the NBA this evening, with seven of the eight teams playing tonight hailing from the West. Nikola Jokic and DeMarcus Cousins battle inside in Oakland as we bring you the must-read betting notes from around the Association to help you beat the odds.

Weak Inside

The Thunder have won 14 of the most recent 16 at home in the head-to-head versus the Lakers. Today, Oklahoma City find themselves as 13-point favorites.

OKC?s Steven Adams is shooting just shy of 60 percent from the field this year and has scored at least 16 points in three straight games while attempting double digit field goals. Look for Adams to find success against a Lakers team allowing 25.7 points on 54.2 percent shooting to opposing centers. Back Over his points total of 13.5.

Asserting his dominance

LaMarcus Aldridge has been exceptionally efficient against the Hawks scoring 22, 25, and 32 points over the most recent three games. He has been logging big minutes down the stretch for San Antonio, and as long as the game is close, Aldridge should see his minutes total comfortably above 30.

Look for similar scoring numbers today as the Spurs host Atlanta as 11-point favorites, and back Over Aldridge?s points total of 23.5.

Still successful in a losing effort

Sacramento?s Buddy Hield has shot the ball well versus Houston, going 10 of 17 for 23 points in the first meeting, 8 of 17 the second time for 20, and most recently 8 of 18 for 21. Hield has also been very effective from beyond the arc over the most recent 10 games, connecting on three or more 3-pointers in six of those contests.

Although the Rockets should come away with a win today, Hield looks like a good play. For better odds, look into the ?player odds/team win? option and bet ?Rockets WIN and Hield over 20.5 points? for +175 odds.

Hoping for a good look to start things off

The two top teams in the Western Conference square off with the Warriors taking on the Nuggets. The Warriors are the most efficient shooting team averaging 48.9 percent from the field. They?re coming off a game where they shot just above 60 percent versus the Hornets in a blowout victory. The Nuggets have also shot well, averaging 46.6 percent from the floor.

With the Warriors efficient from everywhere, and the Nuggets ranking as the fourth highest scoring team in the paint averaging 52.4 points a game, look for the first shot of the game to be an easier one, especially if the Nuggets can get penetration inside. Bet the first attempted field goal to be successfully made and choose ?yes? as the +105 underdog option.

Taking the safe route

Head-to-head options are fun wagers especially when comparing two players of the same position going against one another. PointsBet has that option this evening between Nikola Jokic and DeMarcus Cousins.

Jokic has been shooting the ball exceptionally accurately over the last two games going 10 of 16, and 11 of 15 from the floor and averaging 32 minutes played throughout that stretch.

DeMarcus Cousins is coming off a game where he was ejected with a flagrant two, but has logged inconsistent minutes all season, playing more than 30 minutes in only two of the Warriors most recent 10 games. Back Jokic to outscore Cousins, as the extra minutes and higher field goal percentage make Jokic a much more likely candidate for a big game.

Westbrook joins Wilt in NBA history, Thunder beat Lakers
April 2, 2019
By The Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Russell Westbrook became just the second player in NBA history to have 20 points, 20 rebounds and 20 assists in a game as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 119-103 Tuesday night.

Westbrook clinched the mark with a rebound in the final minute, drawing a large ovation from the home crowd. He finished with 20 points, 20 rebound and 21 assists.

Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player to accomplish the feat. He had 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists in a game in 1968.

Westbrook had at least 15 points, 15 rebounds and 15 assists for the eighth time in his career, tying Chamberlain for second-most all-time. Oscar Robertson had 14 such games in his career.

Westbrook finished 8 of 23 from the field as Oklahoma City won for the third time in its last 10 games.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Lakers with 23 points.

WARRIORS 116, NUGGETS 99

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kevin Durant emphatically showed who is still No. 1 in the West, delivering a pair of jarring dunks late in the first half and finishing with 21 points and six assists before being ejected to lead the Golden State past Denver in a matchup of the top teams in the conference.

DeMarcus Cousins had a season-best 28 points, on 12-for-17 shooting, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks for the Warriors (53-24), who have a two-game lead and the tiebreaker on Denver (51-26) with five games to go in the chase for the Western Conference's top seed and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Stephen Curry added 17 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Jamal Murray scored 17 points, and Paul Millsap had 11 points shooting 4 of 11 for Denver, which lost for the third time in four games and played the first night of a tough back-to-back with San Antonio visiting the Mile High City on Wednesday.

SPURS 117, HAWKS 111

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points and San Antonio beat Atlanta for the 21st straight time at home.

San Antonio point guard Derrick White added 23 points after scoring 12 total points in his previous two games.

The Spurs remain seventh in the Western Conference at 45-33.

Atlanta led by as many as nine points in the second half, before San Antonio rallied in the fourth to avoid its second straight loss at home.

Kent Bazemore had 26 points to lead the Hawks, and Alex Len added 21.

ROCKETS 130, KINGS 105

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - James Harden had 36 points and 10 assists and Houston matched its season high with 26 3-pointers in a win over Sacramento.

Eric Gordon and Danuel House Jr. each scored 19 points, Kenneth Faried added 12 points and 11 rebounds, and P.J. Tucker scored 13. The Rockets have won 17 of 20.

Houston (50-28) moved a half-game ahead of idle Portland for third place in the Western Conference. It's the fifth time in the six years that the Rockets have had at least 50 victories.

Buddy Hield had 20 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento. The Kings (38-40) have lost four of six.

Wednesday?s 6-pack

Some very early NFL over/under win totals:

? Arizona 5, under -$130

? Atlanta 8.5, over -$125

? Baltimore 8.5

? Buffalo 6, under -$120

? Carolina 8, under -$120

? Chicago 9.5

Quote of the Day

?Everybody wanted to play out the season and everybody is disappointed. Everyone was led to believe that the Alliance was well-funded and we could play three years without making any money and this, that and the other. Obviously, everything that was said was not very truthful.? Steve Spurrier, talking about the AAF
Wednesday?s quiz
Which major league baseball team used to play its home games in Jarry Park?

Tuesday?s quiz
Excalibur is the Las Vegas casino that looks like a big white castle.

Monday?s quiz
Last time only one #1-seed got to the Final Four was three years ago, when #1-seed North Carolina lost to Villanova in the national title game.

***********************************

Wednesday?s List of 13: Mid-week musings??.

13) After eight weeks of games, the AAF has suspended operations, which is sad for the people who worked there. Players only got paid for the first seven weeks of the season.

Takes lots of money to fund a start-up league like this; there are rumors that the guy from the NHL?s Carolina Hurricanes who invested in the AAF only wanted access to the technology for the league?s betting app, and once he had that, he pulled the plug on spending more money. Supposedly, he dropped $70M on this fiasco. Must be a good betting app.

Not sure what this means, if anything, for the XFL, which starts up next spring.

12) So it is April 2 and here in upstate New York, spring is slowly emerging. It was 46 degrees when I left my house today; in the bank, a guy in line behind me was wearing shorts. Oy.

11) Ronald Acu?a signed a $100M extension with the Braves that keeps his contract under team control until 2028. Team-friendly deal.

10) Seattle TV analyst Mike Blowers told an interesting story Monday night:

Blowers was playing for the Mariners in the mid-90?s; Lou Piniella (a noted hothead) was the manager. Blowers made two errors in the 9th inning that cost Seattle the last game of a road trip. Blowers: ?Lou was sitting towards the front of the plane; he wasn?t real happy with me.?

Next game for Seattle is a home game; Blowers comes to the plate for the first time, and is booed when his name is announced. He hits a grand slam.

Second time up, Blowers is still booed a little; he hits a 3-run homer.

Third time up, Blowers gets a standing ovation.

Lessons: Baseball is a tough game; people are fickle.

9) Washington Wizards fired team president Ernie Grunfeld after 16 seasons; Wizards are having their first losing season in six years. Washington hasn?t been to a conference final since 1979, so the franchise?s issues go way back before Grunfeld was around.

8) Last Thursday, Michael Reed started in RF on Opening Day for the Giants; he went 0-8 with six strikeouts in four games and Tuesday, he was designated for assignment. Produce or else.

7) Nationals? SS Trea Turner tried to bunt last night; the ball hit his finger and he left the game, with what looked a lot like a broken finger.

6) Former tennis star Billie Jean King is a minority owner of the LA Dodgers.

5) Few years ago, I?m driving thru New Jersey and stop for gas. I get out of the car and start pumping the gas, and this little Asian guy comes running out of the store, yelling at me, waving his arms. Apparently it is illegal in New Jersey to pump your own gas. Who knew?

Funny thing, they pump it for you but the gas is still cheaper than it is in New York.

4) From Christopher Kamka: Last time Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks all won on the same day was April 21, 2012, the day Philip Humber threw a perfect game for the White Sox.

3) Puerto Rico has a larger population than 21 of the 50 states.

2) Lipscomb 71, Wichita State 64? Shockers led by 11 in second half, but veteran Lipscomb team rallied back, scored last 14 points of the game and will play for the NIT title Thursday night.

1) Texas 58, TCU 44? If you had Texas-Lipscomb in your NIT brackets, you?re about to get paid. TCU beat the Longhorns twice during the regular season, but came up empty here.
