WNBA Betting Recap - 6/4-6/10
June 12, 2018

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 4 through Sunday, June 10)

-- Favorites went 9-4 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 9-4 against the spread (ATS)
-- Road teams went 7-6 SU record
-- Home teams went 7-6 ATS record
-- The 'under' went 8-5

Team Betting Notes

-- As mentioned last week, Atlanta (5-3) has alternated wins and losses against the spread all season, going 4-4 ATS through eight games while failing to cover or not cover in consecutive outings. The 'under' has been very consistent, however, going 6-1 across their past seven.

-- Chicago (3-5) opened with a pair of victories, but it has been all downhill from there. They have dropped five of their past six games straight-up, while going 0-3-1 ATS across their past four outings. The 'over' has connected in four of the past five contests.

-- Dallas (4-3) has picked up wins in consecutive outings for the first time this season, although they're 1-2 ATS across the past three. They're also 2-3 ATS in the past five on the road, including 0-2 ATS in the past two away from home. The 'over' has cashed in three in a row, however.

-- Indiana (0-8) heads into the new week still searching for their first straight-up victory. While they haven't been able to break through in the win column on the WNBA floor, they have covered two in a row, and three of their past four. The 'over' has hit in five of their past seven. They're best chance at a victory might be Tuesday when they welcome expansion Las Vegas (1-7) to town.

-- Speaking of the Aces, they have dropped three in a row and seven of their first eight. However, Vegas has come up big at the betting window, cashing in two straight while going 3-0-1 ATS over the past four contests.

-- Minnesota (3-6) continues to stumble along, as they haven't won consecutive games since May 23-25. They're also coming up empty at the betting window, going just 1-8 ATS so far this season.

-- Los Angeles (5-2) hasn't been able to piece together more than two wins at a time so far, but they are doing well for total bettors. Their team defense lately has contributed to four consecutive 'under' results.

-- Connecticut (7-1) has been red hot, losing just once against the Dream on June 5. They have been money at home, going 4-0 SU/3-1 ATS.

-- Like the Dream above, Seattle (6-3) has alternated wins and losses against the spread so far through nine games, so if you believe in trends they'll cover Tuesday against the Sky before failing to cover against the Sun on Friday. We'll see.

Fever, Aces enter matchup with one combined win

If the Indiana Fever are going to break out of the winless skid that has defined them through the first quarter of the WNBA season, they won't likely get a better chance than Tuesday's home matchup at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis against the Las Vegas Aces.

Las Vegas has tasted victory only once this year and was the worst team in the league in 2017.

But that one win is one better than the Fever, who have lost eight straight games to begin the season for the first time in franchise history.

Indiana fell to 0-8 with a 78-75 loss at New York on Sunday in a game featured 18 lead changes. Neither team led by more than four through the first half.

The Fever couldn't hold a late lead, with former Indiana stalwart Marissa Coleman ending the Fever's chances with a 3-pointer with 16 seconds to play.

Coleman's final 3-pointer was New York's 13th made shot from beyond the arc in the game, the most ever against Indiana.

Indiana got a game-high 19 points from Kelsey Mitchell, and Tiffany Mitchell scored 14 points for the Fever, reaching double figures for the seventh time in eight games. Victoria Vivians added 11 points and Natalie Achonwa contributed 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"We know that we are right there," said Achonwa, who registered the second double-double of her career to help Indiana to a 31-22 rebounding edge. "We know we need one more stop; one more shot; one more rebound; one more deflection; one fewer turnover. Everybody needs to improve just one percent more."

This will be Indiana's first meeting with the team from Las Vegas (1-7), which recently relocated to the Nevada desert after being founded in and playing for 15 years in San Antonio.

The Aces head to Indiana on the heels of a 72-66 loss at Phoenix on Sunday. Las Vegas whittled a 15-point Mercury lead to four with 3:17 to go but scored on just one of its remaining five possessions.

"Our defensive effort was better; we got mentally engaged," Aces coach Bill Laimbeer said. "When we really get that edge, we are a decent basketball team. We just have to do that for 40 minutes.

"We kept Phoenix on the perimeter and made them take some long shots, and that likely tired them out and helped us get back in the game."

Las Vegas got 17 points from A'ja Wilson, 16 from Kayla McBride and 12 from Kelsey Plum in the loss.

"But overall we have to put the ball in the basket, too, and we didn't do that (against Phoenix)," Laimbeer said. "To be a good basketball team, you have to do all the little things -- and some of those are shooting and rebounding."

As the WNBA's 11th-place team last season, Indiana was swept by the 12th-place Stars (now Aces), losing the three meetings in 2017 by an average of 11.7 points per game.

Through eight games, No. 1 overall pick and Aces center Wilson and No. 2 pick and Fever guard Mitchell are poised to race each other for the Rookie of the Year award. They are the top scoring rookies in the league, with Wilson sixth at 20.4 points per game and Mitchell ninth at 19.4 ppg.

Mercury take five-game win streak into Dallas

The Phoenix Mercury will ride a five-game winning streak, their longest since 2015, when they travel to face a confident Dallas Wings team on Tuesday.

Dallas (4-3) has won three of its last four games, including an impressive 94-90 home win over the Seattle Storm on June 2. Seattle had a five-game winning streak heading into that game, similar to Phoenix.

The game is a rematch between Phoenix (7-3) and Dallas from the season-opener on May 18 in Phoenix, won by the Mercury 86-78. The Mercury must guard against looking ahead to an anticipated matchup with the WNBA's top team, the Connecticut Sun (7-1), on Saturday in Phoenix.

The Phoenix-Dallas matchup also features Round 2 of a matchup of top post players -- Brittney Griner of Phoenix and Liz Cambage of Dallas.

Cambage, a top international player from Australia returning to the WNBA after four seasons away, made six of her first nine shots for 14 first-half points and finished with 18 points and nine rebounds in the first game. Griner battled through foul trouble to finish with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Griner is coming off a near triple-double in Phoenix's 72-66 win over the visiting Las Vegas Aces on Sunday. She finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Her 15 rebounds are the most for her since September 2016.

"Blocks keep them from scoring and give us another possession," Griner said. "I've gotten better at trying to keep it in play and block it without hitting them with my body. Jump away but still get the block. Because blocking, then getting a foul, that's the worst.

As for her 15 rebounds, Griner said she told Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello, "Don't get used to it."

"It's a conscious effort I have to make to go try to get a board, but tonight they were just falling in my hands," Griner said. "Just the luck of the fall, I'll take them, though."

Cambage is coming off a game in which she had 23 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots in Dallas' 89-83 road win against the Indiana Fever last Friday.

Cambage's Australian National Team teammate Cayla George, formerly of the Mercury, signed with Dallas a week ago.

"Cayla brings a versatile game to our roster, with the ability to play multiple positions on the floor," Wings President & CEO Greg Bibb said of the 6-foot-4 player. "She is an outstanding rebounder and a player who has the ability to extend her shooting range well outside the paint. We are excited to add her to our team."

Dallas guard Skylar Diggins-Smith had a career-high 35 points with 12 rebounds and six assists in the win at Indiana. Diggins-Smith vs. Phoenix's Diana Taurasi also figures to be an attractive matchup.

Taurasi turned 36 years old on Monday, a day after scoring 25 points in the win over Las Vegas.

Sky return to play Storm after falling on hard times

The last time the Chicago Sky and Seattle Storm met, it turned out to be a turning point for both teams.

The Sky entered the May 25 matchup at KeyArena with a 2-1 record, and the Storm were 1-1 and trying to avoid dropping their first two home games of the season.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Sky led by 14 points. But the Storm rallied to force overtime and won 95-91 as Jewell Loyd scored 29 points and Breanna Stewart added 28.

The teams meet again Tuesday night in Seattle.

The Sky (3-5) have lost three of four since that night, including the first two on their current three-game trip.

"The Seattle game was pretty heartbreaking. It's difficult to lose a lead like that, then try to look back and see what we all could have done better," Sky rookie Gabby Williams, the No. 4 overall pick in the WNBA draft out of UConn, wrote on her "View from the Sky" diary on espnW. "It was one of those games where one play could change the whole momentum of the game."

The Storm (6-3) have won four of six since rallying against the Sky.

"They were absolutely marvelous in time and score situations," Storm coach Dan Hughes said of his players after that victory. "Their execution and playing to the right players were excellent."

Both teams are coming off cold-shooting games in losses Sunday.

The Sky suffered a 77-59 defeat at Los Angeles. Chicago shot just 28.4 percent from the field (21 of 74) and made only one of its first 21 3-point attempts.

Cheyenne Parker had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Chicago, the only Sky player with more than seven points. Williams, who had 26 points in a 96-79 loss Friday at Phoenix to open the trip, scored just two Sunday on 1-of-11 shooting.

"In college, the season opens in November and you can say, 'OK, by February, I'll have this down.' It's not like that here; we don't have the time," Williams wrote in her diary. "It's hard on your body, it's hard mentally and emotionally. It's straining."

The Storm opened a five-game homestand Sunday with a 67-64 loss to the Atlanta Dream, despite rallying from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a late lead.

Seattle shot 33.8 percent (25 of 74) from the field and made a season-low four 3-pointers.

"We want to win at home, especially because it is still early in the season," said Stewart, who played a career-low 20 minutes because of foul trouble and scored just 12 points, well below her average of 20.4 that ranks fourth in the WNBA. "We will be back in the gym (Monday) and be ready for Tuesday."

Sparks-Dream matchup could be defensive battle

After playing their worst game of the season on Thursday, the Los Angeles Sparks bounced back to beat the Chicago Sky on Sunday. The Sparks led wire to wire and held the Sky to 59 points, 18 below their season average.

Candace Parker credited the dominating win with being better prepared for Chicago after "we weren't in it" -- it being a 25-point loss to the Seattle Storm on Thursday.

During film sessions leading up to Sunday's game, "the focus was on us and what we do and how we do it. You can tell when we're aggressive in our mindset," she said, adding the blowout loss was plenty of motivation.

The Sparks will need that same kind of effort when they play the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday at Staples Center. The Dream (5-3) have won three straight and, as predicted in the preseason, are the league's most improved team.

Last year, Atlanta finished with a 12-22 record. This year, the Dream are far superior to last year's squad, especially on defense.

On Monday, Tiffany Hayes was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

Her 23 points per game topped all players in the East. She ranked ninth in field-goal percentage (55.8 percent) and sixth in free-throw percentage (88.9 percent). Hayes also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists.

In Sunday's win over the Storm in Seattle, Hayes scored eight of her 23 points in the fourth quarter and the Dream stepped up its defense after falling behind 61-60. The Storm were held scoreless for two minutes of the final 2:34.

Angel McCoughtry scored 15 points and now has 5,120 in her career as she nudged past Swin Cash for 15th on the WNBA points list.

Seattle was held to four 3-pointers and shot just 33.8 percent from the field.

"I thought it was a battle," Dream coach Nikki Collen said. "Coming into the game, I thought it was going to take a monumental defensive effort. Seattle has been so good from (behind) the arc and really sharing the basketball. Obviously, a big key was getting (Breanna) Stewart in foul trouble."

It's no coincidence the Dream are allowing only 77.3 points per game -- third lowest in the league.

"It's the game plan," Hayes explained. "We're being disciplined, doing what (coach) says, and everything is working. Everybody is communicating with each other so when somebody gets beat there's someone helping. Our team is always going to be a defensive team, so when we do that right, everything else falls into place."

Having already defeated Connecticut and Seattle, the top two offensive teams in the league, Atlanta faces another stiff test.

Parker is just rounding into form after minor offseason surgery. She looked like her old self on Sunday, with 24 points, six boards and three assists. Nneka Ogwumike added 16 points and Chelsea Gray 15.

Brian Agler's squad turned up the heat on defense as well. The Sky were held to 28.3 percent from the field, and even more devastating was Chicago's 3-point shooting.

The Sky hit only one of the first 21 attempts from beyond the arc. The Sparks set the tempo early, took the lead, and never relinquished their advantage.

"I liked our aggression, and when we're able to play like that we're able to keep moving and we're at our best," Parker said.

The loss to Seattle was the worst home loss in Agler's three years in Los Angeles.

"I thought Nneka and Candace were really, really effective, especially early when they played minutes, because they're so mobile and skilled," he said. "I think it all started right there."

DALLAS (AP) Diana Taurasi scored 21 points, Brittney Griner added 18 before fouling out late and the Phoenix Mercury won their sixth straight with a 75-72 victory over the Dallas Wings on Tuesday night.

Taurasi made all 10 of her free throws, including three straight on one possession to tie it at 69 after Skylar Diggins-Smith was called for a technical foul. Phoenix (8-3) was 20 of 22 at the line.

Camille Little was fouled after an offensive rebound and she made both free throws to give Phoenix a 73-72 lead. After a timeout with 15.6 seconds left, Aerial Powers missed an open jumper and Diggins-Smith stepped out of bounds after getting an offensive rebound. Briann January made two free throws with 2.2 seconds left and Diggins-Smith hit the back of the rim at the buzzer.

Neither team made a field goal in the final three minutes.

Diggins-Smith, the WNBA scoring leader at 23 points per game, was held to 16 points for Dallas (4-4). The Wings scored 16 of their 32 second-half points at the free-throw line.

WINGS 101, FEVER 92, OT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A'ja Wilson scored 17 of her 35 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, helping the Aces beat the winless Fever.

Las Vegas opened the extra session on an 8-0 run after Indiana closed regulation by scoring eight straight points. The Fever didn't make their first field goal of overtime until 55.4 seconds remained.

Erica Wheeler's steal and fast-break layup pulled Indiana to 84-80 with 1:31 left in the fourth. After another Las Vegas turnover, Wheeler made a pull-up jumper in the lane for a two-point deficit and then she drew an offensive foul on Kelsey Plum. Candice Dupree tied it at 84 with 25.9 left and Kayla McBride missed three shots on Las Vegas' final possession.

McBride scored 18 points for Las Vegas (2-7). Wilson was 16 of 24 from the field and also grabbed 13 rebounds.

Natalie Achonwa had career-highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds for Indiana (0-9), which has lost nine straight games to begin the season for the first time in franchise history. Achonwa's former coach, Muffet McGraw, at Notre Dame sat courtside. Tiffany Mitchell added 17 points for the Fever, reaching double figures for the eighth time in nine games.

STORM 96, SKY 85

SEATTLE (AP) - Breanna Stewart scored a season-high 30 points to help the Storm rally past the Sky.

Seattle trailed 73-59 late in the third quarter before hitting back-to-back 3-pointers. The Storm took a 77-75 lead amid a 12-0 run - with seven points from Stewart.

The Sky only scored two points in the final four minutes.

Natasha Howard and Jewell Loyd each added 15 points for Seattle (7-3). The Storm shot 10 for 15 in the first quarter and led 29-24 behind 10 points from Stewart but were outscored 27-15 in the third.

It was Seattle's second 14-point comeback of the season.

Diamond DeShields led Chicago (3-6) with 22 points and Allie Quigley added 20. The pair combined to make nine of the Sky's 13 3-pointers. Chicago has lost six of its last seven.

SPARKS 72, DREAM 64

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Candace Parker scored 18 points, Nneka Ogwumike had 11 points and 10 rebounds and the Sparks beat the Dream.

Odyssey Sims made a hook shot in the lane to extend Los Angeles' lead to eight points with 41.1 seconds to go and Essence Carson had a block at the other end to seal it.

Chelsea Gray added 10 points with seven assists for Los Angeles (6-2). The Sparks won four times during their five-game homestand.

Parker scored 13 points in the first half to help Los Angeles to a 43-32 lead.

Tiffany Hayes scored 16 points for Atlanta (5-4), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. Jessica Breland added 14 points and Angel McCoughtry was held to 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting. The Dream shot just 38.5 percent from the floor, including 2 of 12 from 3-point range.

Sun aiming to use 'pack mentality' vs. Mystics

The Connecticut Sun are 7-1 and have clearly gotten there on the strength of their balance.

"I think the biggest thing that Coach (Curt Miller) is trying to tell us is to have a pack mentality and I think that is what we have," Courtney Williams said after Saturday's home victory over the defending champion Minnesota Lynx.

"All of us are scorers, all of us can have a night. So, I think that's a big thing for our team."

The Sun host the Washington Mystics on Wednesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. They defeated the Mystics 88-64 in Washington as part of their 5-0 start.

Following a loss at Atlanta, they have bounced back with two straight wins and play at home Wednesday prior to a five-game road trip.

"This is a very big stretch for us," Miller said. "We will have a lot of home games down the stretch."

Led by Jasmine Thomas, the Sun have six players averaging between 14.0 and 10.3 points per game.

That, folks, is balance.

"I think it is a whole mentality that we've talked about, a 'we have to win as a pack mentality,' " Miller said. "We don't really have an alpha dog that a few teams have in the league, but we feel we're very deep and we have a balance and depth within our roster.

"We have equal shot distribution and balanced scoring throughout our team."

Williams scored 20 and Jasmine Thomas 18 in the victory over the Lynx before a boisterous crowd at the casino.

Thomas scored 25 points and was a plus-29 and Alex Bentley came off the bench with 15 points in Connecticut's win at Washington -- one of the stops on the coming trip.

The Mystics won their first four games but have lost their last three and four of their last five while trying to get through a series of injuries -- and illness, the latter to their star, Elena Delle-Donne.

They have been off since losing at home to Minnesota last Thursday and should benefit from the rest and chance to practice.

And Sunday, the team had a very special practice visitor, as the Capitals brought the Stanley Cup for a visit. The players posed for both individual and a team picture with the oldest trophy in sports.

Delle-Donne has played in five of the nine games, with her illness connected to her battle with Lyme disease.

"Because of issues with autoimmune stuff, I've just got to really listen to my body," she said recently. "Rest is the biggest thing.

"The worst part is you never know when it's going to come up."

Liberty will see familiar face against Aces

There will be a sense of familiarity for the New York Liberty when they glance at the visiting sideline and see Bill Laimbeer giving instructions.

Laimbeer will be doing the coaching for the Las Vegas Aces, who visit the Liberty on Wednesday night at the Westchester County Civic Center in White Plains, N.Y.

Laimbeer is known to NBA fans as the bruising big man for the "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons, who won consecutive titles in 1989 and 1990. To Liberty fans, he is known as the team's sixth coach, a role he held the previous five seasons.

During his time in New York, he also served as general manager for 2013-14 and again last season. The Liberty went 92-78 in the five seasons Laimbeer was the coach. They were 26-42 in his first two seasons as GM before getting to the playoffs in the next three campaigns.

Laimbeer left the Liberty after last season to join the Aces, who relocated from San Antonio after last season. His new team is off to a 2-7 start.

The Aces halted a three-game losing streak when rookie A'ja Wilson totaled 35 points and 13 rebounds in Tuesday's 101-92 overtime victory at Indiana. It was her sixth game with at least 20 points and her third double-double.

Wilson, who was the top overall draft pick this year and was the NCAA Player of the Year from South Carolina, is averaging 22 points per game. She scored 10 points in overtime after Las Vegas blew an eight-point lead in the final two-plus minutes of regulation.

"Nobody can guard her one-on-one, she's just too fast," Laimbeer told the Las Vegas Review-Journal last week. "You have to respect her 15-footer or else she'll drive right by you also."

Laimbeer's former team also is off to a slow start filled with close games. The Liberty are 3-4 through their first seven games and each contest has been decided by six points or fewer.

New York rebounded from close home losses to the Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun by getting a 78-75 win over the Indiana Fever on Sunday.

The Liberty held a seemingly comfortable lead early in the fourth quarter but needed a 3-pointer from Marissa Coleman with 16.1 seconds remaining.

"We needed this win," Coleman said. "We don't want to get too far behind where we're having to fight to get some wins towards the end of the season. So hopefully we can build from this."

Coleman's game-winner helped the Liberty win on a sluggish day when Tina Charles was held to 13 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

Charles' quiet performance occurred on a day when the Liberty shot 45.6 percent from the field and was 13-for-24 from 3-point range.

The Liberty hope they are aided by the returns of Epiphanny Prince and Kiah Stokes. Prince will be making her season debut after suffering a concussion, while Stokes missed the last three games with a left foot injury.

New York is 7-1 in the last eight meetings with the Las Vegas franchise.

Mystics win after blowing 30-point lead
June 13, 2018

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Elena Delle Donne scored 36 points, Kristi Toliver added 25 and the Washington Mystics blew a 30-point lead before beating the Connecticut Sun 95-91 on Wednesday night.

Washington led 31-15 at the end of the first quarter and extended it to 57-27 late in the second on Toliver's 3-pointer. Connecticut rallied in the second half, and Courtney Williams gave the Sun their first lead at 77-76 with 6:58 to ho But Delle Donne scored Washington's next 10 points for an 86-83 lead.

Chiney Ogwumike's steal and fast-break layup gave Connecticut an 87-86 lead, but Toliver answered at the other end with a long 3-pointer for her first points of the second half.

Jasmine Thomas sank a baseline jumper to pull Connecticut to 93-91 with 12 seconds left. Toliver sealed it with two free throws to snap a three-game losing streak for Washington (6-4).

Delle Donne had 22 points and Toliver scored 20 in the first half as the Mystics led 65-37.

Williams scored a career-high 34 points for Connecticut (7-2).

It was the largest halftime deficit overcome in league history, topping 22 points by Washington on July 17, 2011.

ACES 78, LIBERTY 63

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Dearica Hamby scored 17 points to help Las Vegas beat New York.

Kayla McBride added 16 for the Aces (3-7). The game marked the return of Bill Laimbeer, who coached the Liberty for five years before heading to Las Vegas in the offseason. Laimbeer joked before the game that the teams ran the same plays and that they could call each other's sets.

Tina Charles led New York (3-5) with 19 points.

Dream drop Fever to 0-10 on the season
June 14, 2018

ATLANTA (AP) Tiffany Hayes had 23 points, Layshia Clarendon scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Dream beat the winless Indiana Fever 72-67 on Thursday.

Clarendon hit a long 3-pointer to give Atlanta a 60-55 lead with 4:14 remaining and she made a reverse layup on their next possession for a seven-point advantage.

Atlanta inbounded it with three seconds on the shot clock and Angel McCoughtry was fouled on a long jumper before making two free throws for a 66-60 lead with 18.1 seconds to go.

McCoughtry scored eight of her 16 points in the fourth for Atlanta (6-4), which has won four of its last five games. She made all eight of her free throws and Hayes was 11 of 15.

Indiana (0-10) has lost 18 in a row dating to last season. The Fever are 2-28 since July 1, 2017.

Candice Dupree scored 17 points for Indiana. Tiffany Mitchell and Victoria Vivians added 13 points apiece.
