Natalie Achonwa scored 16 to lead the Fever (1-13), who lost their third in a row.

SPARKS 80, LIBERTY 54

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Riquna Williams scored a season-high 25 points, hitting seven 3-pointers, to help the Sparks rout the Liberty.

WNBA Betting Recap - 6/18-6/24
June 26, 2018

League Betting Notes (Monday, June 18 through Sunday, June 24)

-- Favorites went 9-7 straight up (SU)
-- Underdogs went 7-9 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams went 10-6 SU
-- Home/road teams went 8-8 ATS
-- The 'under' went 9-7

Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (7-6) split a pair of games for the second consecutive week, picking up an impressive win against Connecticut (8-5). The victory for the Dream snapped an 0-3 ATS skid. They have yet to cover in back-to-back contests this season, going 5-7-1 ATS overall.

-- For the Sun, they put to bed a four-game losing streak of their own with a win at Indiana (1-13) on Sunday. The 'under' has cashed in three in a row for Connecticut, and is 6-3 across their past nine outings.

-- The Fever continue to struggle in the win-loss category, but at least they've been respectable against the spread. Indiana is 6-4 ATS across the past 10 outings, with the 'under' going 4-1 over the past five. They'll get a chance at revenge on Wednesday in Connecticut.

-- Dallas (6-6) had a three-game cover streak ended at home when Seattle (10-4) blew their doors off in the Metroplex by a 97-76 count. The Wings are a decent 3-2 ATS over their past five outings on the road, and that's where they'll be on Tuesday and Wednesday to start the new week.

-- Las Vegas (5-10) got off to a bit of a slow start, going 1-7 SU. However, they're a respectable 4-3 SU/ATS across the past seven outings, including a 3-1 SU/ATS mark across their past four on the road. The Aces will look to get back on track with a victory against the Wings on Wednesday night.

-- Los Angeles (10-3) continues to turn back most opponents at home, racking up four straight wins on their home floor while going 6-1 SU/5-1-1 ATS in seven games in SoCal. The 'under' has been the play for total bettors at the window, cashing in 8-2 over the past 10 contests.

-- It was a solid start to the season for New York (4-8), but they have hit the skids hard lately. The Liberty opened with covers in three of their first four, but they have managed to cover just once in the past six outings dating back to June 7. They have allowed at least 72 points in each of their 12 games this season, and the 'over' is 3-1 across their past four.

-- Phoenix (10-5) has suffered two straight losses to follow an eight-game winning streak. They're also 0-2 ATS over the past two to follow their impressive 7-1 ATS run. They'll look to get back on track on the road against the Liberty, a team they beat 80-74 in the City back on June 5 to cover a 2 1/2-point spread.

-- Washington (8-5) has posted a 3-1 SU/ATS record over the past four to follow up a three-game losing streak. The Mystics appear to be back on track, and the 'over' has hit in four of the past five, too. They'll look to keep it going Tuesday against the visiting Sun. They will also be looking to avenge an 88-64 beating on their home court against the Sun back on June 3.

Sky aiming for back-to-back wins

The Chicago Sky will go for back-to-back wins when they host the Atlanta Dream on Wednesday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.

Chicago (4-9) is coming off one of its best performances of the season with a 97-88 win over the Phoenix Mercury. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Sky, who also marked a season high in points.

How much did the group need that win?

"Bad," Sky point guard Courtney Vandersloot said to the Chicago Daily Herald. "We were all in a good mind space. We felt that if we put a complete game together that this would happen. We weren't jumping ship, but let's be honest, we needed a win. And we worked hard for it. We earned it."

Two days later, another challenge awaits.

Atlanta (7-6) also is seeking back-to-back victories after holding on for a 75-70 win over the Connecticut Sun in its last game. The victory propped the Dream back over .500 as they jockey for playoff positioning in a crowded field.

Guard-forward Angel McCoughtry has been a big part of Atlanta's success. The 31-year-old veteran recently was named as the WNBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 32 points per game in her past two contests. She scored a career-high 39 points against the New York Liberty and followed that up with 25 points in the win over Connecticut.

A busy midseason schedule has forced Dream guard Renee Montgomery and her teammates to quickly refocus.

"At this point in the season, it's hard to get a lot of scouting in, and it's hard to get a lot of anything in," Montgomery said to the team's official website. "... So basically you just have to be focused when you come into the game about sets that everyone runs and just legs. Once it gets to a point in the season where we're traveling a lot, you come back and you play a high-octane offense, it's really about recovery."

This is the second meeting between the teams this season. On May 23, Atlanta cruised to an 81-63 win thanks in large part to a team-high 22 points from guard Tiffany Hayes, as well as 13 points from Brittney Sykes off the bench. McCoughtry added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Sky guard Allie Quigley scored 13 points to lead her team in the first matchup against the Dream. Center Stefanie Dolson contributed nine points and six rebounds, while rookie Diamond DeShields added eight points and a pair of boards.

Chicago is 3-4 at home this season. Atlanta carries an identical 3-4 record on the road.

Sun return home to face Fever

The road-weary Connecticut Sun return home for the first time since June 13 when they face the Indiana Fever at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on Wednesday night.

But they won't be home long.

After playing the Fever on Wednesday, Connecticut is off on a four-game western trip, which will mean playing 13 of their first 19 games on the road. That, of course, means a heavy home schedule down the stretch, something coach Curt Miller has been counting on.

The Sun finished a five-game trip 1-4 Tuesday night, falling 82-70 to the Mystics in Washington -- the Sun's fifth loss in the last six games after a 7-1 start.

Playing their fifth straight game without the injured Alyssa Thomas (shoulder), the Sun fell to 8-6 heading into Wednesday night's game with the 1-13 Fever.

Chiney Ogwumike led the Sun with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jasmine Thomas and Alex Bentley added 13 points apiece and Michelle Tuck 11 in the loss, which was the second defeat in three games against the Mystics.

This will be the second game between the Sun and Fever in four nights, as Connecticut captured its only win on the road trip Sunday night in Indianapolis.

Rachel Banham had a career-high 20 points, including going 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Brionna Jones established career highs in points (18) and rebounds (10), and both Banham and Jones part of a 46-10 scoring difference between the two benches.

The Fever have lost three in a row since their only win -- a 32-point blowout of the Atlanta Dream.

"We just need to calm down and play our game," guard Victoria Vivians said after Sunday's loss. "Not like confide in what they're doing... just calm down and be who we are."

Natalie Achonwa went 7 of 7 from the floor, scored 16 points and had seven rebounds and Candice Dupree added 15 points and eight boards in Sunday's loss to the Sun, Indiana's second loss of the season to that team.

Since the last time the Sun were at home, Miller, the 2017 WNBA coach of the year, made a side trip to Pennsylvania, where he was inducted into the Metropolitan Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

"It's truly a special opportunity to go into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame," said Miller, a Girard, Ohio, native. "My hometown of Girard, growing up outside of Erie, Pennsylvania, was very special to me. I was surrounded by great coaches at an early age and that led me to the coaching profession because they influenced my life almost as second fathers."

Weary Wings visit Aces

Talent can take a team only so far. Luck seems to always play a role. To be successful a team has to have both, along with mental toughness.

Minnesota and Los Angeles have been the WNBA standard bearers for quite a while and teams such as Las Vegas and Dallas can only wonder what it's like to enjoy the kind of success the Lynx and Sparks have had during their recent run.

The Aces won 15 games over the past two years playing as the San Antonio Stars before moving to Vegas. The Wings have fared a little better winning 27 times during that span, making the playoffs in 2017. This year, the two have shown brief flashes of progress but still have a way to go.

Dallas and Las Vegas will put their wares on display Wednesday at Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Aces (5-10) are coming off a loss to the aforementioned Lynx -- a loss that should provide a good learning opportunity for Bill Laimbeer's squad, which got a good look at what makes up a contender.

"They've won four out of the last six championships," second-year guard Kelsey Plum said the Lynx. "Of course they're skilled and athletic and they have talent, but it all boils down to mental toughness ... They beat us today because they were tougher than us."

Plum was the top pick in last year's WNBA draft. This year's top pick, A'ja Wilson echoed her teammate's thoughts.

"I think we really learned something from this game," Wilson said. "The quicker we learn (mental toughness), the easier it'll be for us. You have to act like you've been in situations before and know how to pull out of it from a mental standpoint ... At the end of the day, the game is all mental."

Talk about mental toughness. The Wings (6-7) are playing their third game in four nights and Wednesday's game is a back-to-back. On Tuesday, Dallas lost to the Sparks 87-83 in Los Angeles. On Sunday, the Seattle Storm beat the Wings, 97-76.

Dallas' Kayla Thornton blamed the loss on a lack of intensity.

"I think we just have to come up more focused as a unit. We have to bring the same energy and the same intensity, and the same effort as if we won."

They brought the energy in the first half Tuesday and carried an eight-point lead throughout the first half and led by four at halftime.

Dallas went up by eight in the third but the Sparks fought back to take a lead in the fourth quarter, despite no head coach Brian Agler (ejected) or Nneka Ogwumike (back).

As usual, Liz Cambage led the Wings with 25 points and 14 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season. The Aces will have to control Cambage if they are to have a chance.

The Wings were unable to stop Seattle's Breanna Stewart (28 points and 12 boards) on Sunday. In Tuesday's loss, Candace Parker knocked down 29 points for Los Angeles. The Aces' Wilson could have a field day as she averages 20.1 points and 8.5 rebounds.

WNBA: Ogwumike, Jones lead Sun past Fever, 101-89
June 27, 2018

LAS VEGAS (AP) Skylar Diggins-Smith scored eight of her 29 points in the final 1:04 and added eight assists in the Dallas Wings' 97-91 victory over the Las Vegas Aces on Wednesday night.

Liz Cambage had 17 points and 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, and Glory Johnson scored a season-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting for Dallas (7-7).

Kayla McBride scored a career-high 38 points on 14-of-22 shooting for Las Vegas (5-11). Rookie A'ja Wilson had 22 points, 15 rebounds and a season-best eight assists.

There were 18 ties and 22 lead changes before Aerial Powers hit a 3-pointer that gave Dallas a 90-89 lead with 2:43 to play and sparked an 8-0 run capped by Diggins-Smith's step-back 3 with 1:04 remaining. Wilson made a jumper that trimmed the Aces' deficit to 95-91 with 27.4 seconds left, but Diggins-Smith capped the scoring with two free throws.

Victoria Vivians had a season-high 25 points for the Fever (1-14). The eighth overall pick this year, she was 10 of 14 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Indiana has lost four in a row.

SKY 93, DREAM 80

Mystics look to keep rolling vs. slumping Liberty

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Mystics go for their fourth straight win when they host the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

The last time the teams met, the Mystics upset the Liberty in a single-elimination, second-round playoff matchup 82-68 in September and the teams have traveled in opposite directions this season.

Washington (9-5) sits atop the Eastern Conference while the Liberty (4-9) have lost three straight and are having problems finding the basket. New York has failed to hit the 70-point mark three times this season, including in their past two contests.

The Liberty nearly rallied back from an early deficit against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, trailing 30-16 after one quarter, but they could not complete the comeback, falling 83-69 at home. Tina Charles led the Liberty with 12 points and Bria Hartley and Shavonte Zellous added 11 each.

"We spotted them a good amount in the first quarter," New York coach Katie Smith said. "The third quarter we could not get any buckets. We had 11 points in the quarter. Scoring points right now is hard for us and we need to find a way to put points on the board."

With a layup in the first quarter, Charles scored the 5,014th point of her career, surpassing Taj McWilliams-Franklin to move into 18th on the WNBA all-time scoring list on a night she took just 12 shots and made four.

"She needs to touch the ball a little more and be a facilitator," Smith said. "At times, we feel the need to allow her to touch the basketball to suck the defense in. I will take her attacking the basket, going in there and getting fouled. We still have to play through her a good bit while still be aggressive at every other position."

The Mystics also fell behind by double digits in the first quarter Tuesday night, trailing the visiting Connecticut Sun by 10. Washington's stepped up its defense and defeated the Sun 92-80 to take over sole possession of first place and improve to 2-1 against Connecticut.

Washington trailed by three at halftime but went on a 16-point run midway through the third quarter.

"It's amazing when you play really good defense what kind of things can happen," Mystics coach Mike Thibault told the Washington Post.

Elena Delle Donne led all scorers with 25 points and LaToya Sanders had a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

"We're trying to be a championship team, so when we play other good teams, we can't just get blown out by 30 when we know we have the talent and 12 healthy players now to compete with anybody in this league," Sanders told the Post.

The Liberty have been victimized by the 3-pointer of late, allowing 20 makes from deep at a 51 percent clip over the past two games. That does not bode well against a Washington team that leads the WNBA in 3-point shooting percentage (36.6 percent).

Sparks-Storm Preview

A Los Angeles-Seattle matchup would generally create some buzz around the WNBA.

Thursday night's game at Key Arena is no different, but for different reasons.

A headline Wednesday on WNBA.com read: "Sparks & Storm Quotes About ESPN The Magazine's BODY Issue."

Longtime Storm point guard Sue Bird is on the cover with girlfriend Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. national team soccer star. Seattle forward Breanna Stewart is featured inside.

"It's been great, I would say 99.9 percent positive," Bird told The Seattle Times. "There are some people -- mostly on Twitter, so I try not to read a lot of the comments -- who don't like naked bodies.

"But I don't view it that way at all. I think it's a celebration of people who are athletes who part of their job is to take care of themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle. And we all look different. It's a celebration of that. That's how I see it."

While Bird and Stewart have received positive reviews, Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike said she heard from several critics last year after appearing in the Body Issue.

"I got mixed reviews because I come from a very conservative culture being Nigerian," Ogwumike told WNBA.com. "I had a lot of conference calls with family members."

As for Thursday's game ...

The last time the teams met June 7, the Storm won 88-63 for their first victory at Los Angeles since 2015.

That loss sparked Los Angeles, which won its next five games to move to the top of the WNBA standings.

That streak was snapped Friday, when the Sparks suffered another lopsided defeat -- 101-72 at Dallas.

The Sparks responded with an 87-73 home victory over Dallas on Tuesday night as Candace Parker scored 29 points.

The Sparks (11-3) hope Tuesday's win starts another positive run. The Sparks played Tuesday without Ogwumike, the 2016 league MVP, because of a back injury. Ogwumike is averaging 16.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

"Nneka is irreplaceable," Parker said. "We just try to do the best we can by committee."

The Sparks also had to overcome coach Brian Agler's ejection early in the third quarter. Agler is in his 15th season as a head coach, including 2008-14 with the Storm.

"He was fighting for the team and felt that we weren't getting some of the calls that were obvious in our opinion," said Sparks assistant coach Bobbie Kelsey, who took over for the rest of the game. "That's what we're here for, to support the coach and what the team needs."

The Storm (10-5) are coming off a 91-79 loss Tuesday at defending WNBA champion Minnesota despite 27 points from Stewart, the league leader with 22.3 points per game.

Delle Donne's 3-pointer lifts Mystics over Liberty, 80-77
June 28, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Elena Delle Donne hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Washington Mystics an 80-77 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

After LaToya Sanders hit two free throws to give Washington (10-5) a 77-75 lead with 17.1 seconds to play, Tina Charles banked in a short turn-around jumper to tie it about 10 seconds later. Kristi Toliver's 3-point attempt was blocked by Sugar Rodgers as time appeared to expire, but 0.6 seconds were put on the clock after video review, and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt found Delle Donne with the inbound pass for the winner.

Delle Donne led Washington with 22 points, Shatori Kimbrough-Walker had 12, and Toliver 10. The Mystics have won four in a row.

Epiphanny Prince led New York (4-10) with a season-high 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Charles finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Kia Vaughn had 16 points. The Liberty have lost four straight.
