Monday's Tip Sheet
Kevin Rogers

Magic at Raptors (-4 ?, 212 ?) ? 7:35 PM EST

The first opponent that Toronto eliminated in the playoffs on its way to its first championship in franchise history was Orlando last April. After the Magic shocked the Raptors in the series opener, Toronto grabbed the next four games to advance to the second round. In spite of Kawhi Leonard venturing west, the Raptors have won two of their first three games, including a 24-point blowout of the Bulls on Saturday night. Toronto rebounded off a loss at Boston on Friday as five Raptors finished with double-figures on Saturday, led by Pascal Siakam?s 19 points.

The Magic are fresh off a Southeast division title, but Orlando is coming off its first loss of the season in a 103-99 defeat at Atlanta as 2 ?-point road favorites on Saturday. Orlando has failed to bust the 100-point mark in two games, as the Magic converted only 5-of-31 three-point attempts against the Hawks, including the starting five shooting a dreadful 1-of-16 from long distance. In two games, Orlando has shot 14-of-61 from three-point range, as the Magic are listed in the underdog role for the first time this season after going 0-2 ATS as a favorite.

The Raptors captured six of nine meetings from the Magic last season, including a 3-2 SU/ATS record at home. Orlando has hit the UNDER in each of its first two games, while Toronto is coming off its first UNDER after hitting the OVER in the first two contests.

Jazz (-5, 217 ?) at Suns ? 10:05 PM EST

Both these teams have started 2-1 on the young season, but Phoenix is the bigger surprise out of these two squads hooking up on Monday night. The Suns have won each of their first two games at Talking Stick Resort Arena against the Kings and Clippers, while shocking Los Angeles on Saturday night as a 10-point underdog, 130-122. Phoenix shot 50% from the floor, led by Devin Booker?s 30 points, while Kelly Oubre, Jr. chipped in 20 points for the Suns.

The Jazz picked up their first cover of the season on Saturday night in a wire-to-wire blowout of the Kings, 113-81 as 9 ?-point home favorites. Utah rebounded from a nine-point road loss to the Lakers the night before by jumping out to a 25-point halftime lead and never looking back. Bojan Bogdanovic paced the Jazz with 26 points, as Utah drilled 18 three-pointers after hitting a combined 14 treys in it first two games of the season.

Utah has cashed the UNDER in all three games this season, while limiting all three opponents to 95 points or less. Phoenix hit its first OVER in the win over Los Angeles, as the Suns are the only team to start 3-0 ATS. The Jazz have captured seven consecutive meetings with the Suns dating back to 2018 with every win in this span coming by double-digits.

Nuggets (-6, 218) at Kings ? 10:05 PM EST

Sacramento was expected to be in the mix for a playoff spot in the Western Conference this season and even though the Kings have played three games, they haven?t looked a postseason squad. The Kings were outscored, 70-36 in the second half of a season opening rout at the hands of the Suns, 124-95. Sacramento hung with Portland in its home opener, but the Blazers outscored the Kings by 10 points in the third quarter of a 122-112 defeat.

Game 3 was a clunker for the Kings in a 113-81 setback at Utah with no rest on Saturday as De?Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield combined for 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting. The night before against Portland, Fox and Hield put up 49 points, as their production hinges on the success for Sacramento, who begins a three-game homestand that continues with Charlotte on Wednesday and Utah on Friday.

The Nuggets finished one victory shy of the Western Conference Finals last season, but picked up a modicum of revenge against the Blazers in the season opener. Denver pulled away from Portland, 108-100, highlighted by 18 three-pointers from the Nuggets, including three from big man Nikola Jokic, who scored a team-high 20 points. The Nuggets edged the Suns as a heavy favorite on Friday, 108-107 in overtime, as Jokic produced a triple-double in spite of Denver shooting 39% from the floor.

Denver swept Sacramento last season in the three-game regular season series, as two of those victories came by four points or less. All three matchups sailed OVER the total, while the Kings squandered double-digit leads in two of the three losses.

Hot & Not Report
October 28, 2019
By Matt Blunt

Week of October 28th

Last week's focus on the World Series got off to a rocky start with Washington winning the first two games on the road and bucking the trend of LCS 'sweepers' rarely winning more than one game in the World Series. But with Houston righting the ship on the plane ride to Washington and now returning home up 3-2 in the series, the historical trend of teams who needed more LCS games to get here is back in the driver's seat to cash.

The World Series will be over in a few days now, and with plenty of stuff going on last week with the start of the World Series and the usual college and pro football schedule, there was no time to touch on the start of the NBA season.

We are now about a week into it with every team having at least two games under their belt. Obviously we are a long ways away from viewing what should be a highly intriguing playoff season for the first time in years, but there are two season-long situations I always like to keep in mind in the NBA each year. And while they can't be blindly followed each night the long-term results speak for themselves.

Who's Hot

Fading the defending NBA Champions

Approx. +34 units blind since the start of the 2004-05 campaign and +31 blind units the past three seasons
Only five of 15 teams finished the next year with a winning ATS record
As exciting as it was for basketball fans north of the border to see their beloved Toronto Raptors go the distance last year ? and be the example of why teams in all sports should ?go for it? in terms of roster moves when they are close to being a championship title team ? from a betting perspective, it was going to be tough to look great this year; with or without Kawhi Leonard.

Defending NBA champs have not been good from a season-long ATS perspective the following year and this year is likely going to be no different. Sure, the easy answer in terms of looking at that is that Toronto did lose some exceptional talent from last year's squad, but that's generally accounted for in point spreads each night and will be sharper numbers as the year goes on.

Raptors fans will be quick to quote Toronto's 17-5 SU record without Kawhi Leonard as ?evidence? as to why they will be just fine this year, but that number without context isn't complete. They beat up on a lot of bad teams in those games without Leonard ? they were 4-5 SU against teams that finished with a winning record ? and it's not like the rest of the Eastern Conference didn't get better for the most part.

Sure, there are still those tanking teams in the East, but the talent pool has been spread out through so many more teams this year that to expect Toronto have similar-type success is just irresponsible. There competition will be better on nearly a nightly basis, and as the champs they are always going to get an opponent's best shot. With Toronto now having the ?champions tax? levied on their point spreads now, and while the tax rate may not be as high as what the Warriors and Cavaliers were dealing with in year's past, it's still out there attached to lines.

Furthermore, while there have been defending champions who were strong bets ATS-wise the following year since 2004, there are some extenuating circumstances surrounding those that actually turned a profit.

The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors were the most recent (and tied for the best record at 45-35-2 ATS) to do it, but that came during the season they achieved the regular season win total record. That team was phenomenal from top to bottom and it was still in the early stages of the dynasty years for the Warriors before the market could really catch up in terms of how good they were.

The 2012-13 Miami Heat were also 10 games above .500 ATS-wise when coming off a championship campaign at 46-36 ATS, but they were also en route to a return trip to the Finals and another title with LeBron James at his peak athletically and mentally in his 28-year-old season. This year's Toronto team isn't comparable with that nor the 15-16 Warriors, so keep that in mind.

The other three teams that managed a winning ATS record after a championship win were the 2014-15 San Antonio Spurs (41-39-2 ATS), the 2008-09 Boston Celtics (43-39) and the 2006-07 Dallas Mavericks (41-37-4).

As you can see, not one of them finished more than four games over the .500 mark in terms of point spread wins, and when you break down the best of the bunch ? 2008-09 Boston ? from a monetary standpoint, you would have won $4300 betting $110 to win 100 on -110 lines, while losing $4290 at -110 prices in those 39 defeats for a whopping $10 profit. Not exactly the best path to profit is it.

So while the big winners a few months ago were the Raptors players, organization, and their fans ? and adult diaper companies because bathroom breaks must have been a bitch for the masses that could barely move at that parade ? bettors should be on the lookout to be big winners themselves this year by taking the other side in Toronto games.

Who's Not

Backing the NBA Finals losers from a year ago

One winning ATS season in last five years for approx -35 units
Sorry Warriors fans, nobody in the NBA is going to cry for you over the pain you are likely in for this year. And while the answer can be similarly as easy to Toronto's in terms of them missing Kawhi and the Warriors without Durant and Klay Thompson this year, recent history isn't on the runner's up from a betting perspective either.

Over the past five years, teams that lost in the finals have a 181-216-13 ATS record the following season as they've been a great team to fade as well. That's played out so far this year with the Warriors getting smoked in their first two games as they've lost both by 19+, and chances are more pain is in store. After all, Golden State was lined at -1 and +1 for those games as it is.

Now, obviously the bulk of this recent history concerns LeBron James-led teams and his squads are always going to have somewhat inflated point spreads as it is. And if you do take this line of thought back much further, to say the start of the century, there are plenty of favorable results ? eight of 13 teams in this role from 2001 through 2013 finished with winning ATS records the following year ? so this trend might be something that gets cast aside in a month or two when the market catches up to what true numbers for this year's Warriors team should be.

But it's still going to take some time for perception and reality to meet up in the market, as it's still easy to think of how dominant Golden State has been the past five years and have that infect one's handicapping process regarding this year's squad. We've seen that with how awful the point spreads looked in their first two games, and the Warriors may be best to fade more often now, then down the line on a full-season basis like say the Raptors.

Portis, Knicks beat Bulls 105-98 for 1st win of season
October 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Bobby Portis scored a season-high 28 points against his former team, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:47 remaining, and the New York Knicks beat the Chicago Bulls 105-98 on Monday night for their first victory of the season.

Portis hadn't scored in double digits yet in his first season with the Knicks, but was superb in bringing New York back from an 18-point deficit. The reserve was 10 for 14, making all four 3-pointers, and added 11 rebounds.

The Knicks needed all of it on a night when they fell behind with a dreadful start and stayed that way until the fourth quarter. They never even led until Portis' go-ahead 3, which he followed with another 3 that pushed it to 103-98 during a 15-0 run to finish the game.

Rookie RJ Barrett added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Knicks, who had dropped their first three games. Kevin Knox II scored 14 points, and Julius Randle finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.

Zach LaVine scored 21 points for the Bulls, who fell to 1-3. Wendell Carter Jr. had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The Knicks missed 13 of their first 15 shots and quickly fell behind by double digits.

ROCKETS 116, THUNDER 112

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 40 points and Russell Westbrook scored 21 and fell an assist shy of a triple-double against his former team, as Houston beat Oklahoma City.

Westbrook had 12 rebounds and nine assists after notching his 139th triple-double in his last game to pass Magic Johnson for second-most all-time.

A 3-pointer by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with 19 seconds left got Oklahoma City within 3. Westbrook made 1 of 2 free throws before fouling Nerlens Noel, who made both free throws.

But Harden, who was 21 of 22 from the line, made two free throws with 13.2 seconds to go to make it 114-110.

Gilgeous-Alexander cut it to 2 with a basket, but Harden made two more free throws to secure the victory.

It was the first game between these teams since a summer trade reunited Westbrook with Harden and sent Chris Paul to Oklahoma City.

Paul had 15 points, four assists and five rebounds.

Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 points and Dennis Schroder added 22 points to lead the Thunder.

PISTONS 96, PACERS 94

DETROIT (AP) - Derrick Rose made a driving layup with 28.3 seconds left to give Detroit the lead and the Pistons beat winless Indiana for the second time in a week.

Rose shot just 4 of 16 from the field and was having a tough time in the fourth quarter, but his left-handed layup went in to put Detroit up 95-94. Malcolm Brogdon missed at the other end, but Indiana got an offensive rebound. T.J. Warren then missed badly on a tough shot from the corner, and the Pistons came up with the ball.

Luke Kennard made one of two free throws for Detroit, and Indiana had one more chance with 2 seconds left. Warren missed a 3-pointer from the left wing.

Andre Drummond had 18 points and 18 rebounds for the Pistons, and Christian Wood had 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Domantas Sabonis had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Indiana, and Brogdon contributed 15 points and 11 assists.

RAPTORS 104, MAGIC 95

TORONTO (AP) - Kyle Lowry scored 10 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, Pascal Siakam added 24 and Toronto withstood a late rally to beat Orlando for its their third win in four games.

Marc Gasol had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Fred VanVleet scored 14 and OG Anunoby added 12 as the Raptors won for the 10th time in 15 regular-season meetings with Orlando.

Jonathan Isaac scored a career-high 24 points, Evan Fournier had 18 and Markelle Fultz 13 for the Magic, who have lost two straight.

Ex-Raptor Terrence Ross scored 11 for Orlando, and D.J. Augustin had 10.

BUCKS 129, CAVALIERS 112

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Khris Middleton scored 21 points, George Hill added 19 and seven Milwaukee players finished in double figures in a win over Cleveland.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in 29 minutes, Pat Connaughton added 17 points, Brook Lopez 16, and Wesley Matthews and Eric Bledsoe each finished with 14 points for Milwaukee.

Collin Sexton paced the Cavaliers with 18 points, while Jordan Clarkson and Tristan Thompson each added 17.

WARRIORS 134, PELICANS 123

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Stephen Curry had 26 points and 11 assists, and Golden State won for the first time this season, beating winless New Orleans.

Draymond Green had 16 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists for the injury-riddled Warriors, who dropped their first two games by 19 or more points before dominating a Pelicans squad that was missing three injured starters, including top overall draft choice Zion Williamson.

D'Angelo Russell added 24 points and Damion Lee finished with 23 for Golden State, which led wire-to-wire.

Brandon Ingram had 27 points and 10 rebounds for the Pelicans.

The Pelicans were playing a second straight game without veteran guard Jrue Holiday, who has a sprained left knee, and also were without starting center Derrick Favors because of right knee soreness.

First-round draft pick Jaxson Hayes had 19 points for the Pelicans.

76ERS 105, HAWKS 103

ATLANTA (AP) - Joel Embiid scored 36 points, including the winning free throws with 5.3 seconds left, and Philadelphia 76ers won its third straight game to begin the season.

Philadelphia made things tough for Trae Young and dominated down the stretch to deny the young Hawks their first 3-0 start in three seasons.

Tobias Harris had eight of his 13 points in the final quarter as the 76ers outscored the Hawks 15-5 over the final five minutes. Josh Richardson chipped in with 14 points, and Ben Simmons also had 14.

But this was all about Embiid, who made 12 of 19 shots from the field and knocked down all 10 of his free throws. He also had 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Young had 25 points on 7-of-20 shooting. John Collins added 16 points and De'Andre Hunter 14.

SPURS 113, TRAIL BLAZERS 110

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points and San Antonio overcame a sluggish start and beat Portland to remain undefeated.

Portland point guard Damian Lillard had 28 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter. Lillard's 3-pointer from the right corner bounced in and out as time expired.

Derrick White scored 21 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 and Bryn Forbes 14 as the Spurs capped a three-game homestand to open the season.

CJ McCollum added 27 points for the Blazers (2-2).

Weekly Essentials
October 28, 2019
By Tony Mejia

The Timberwolves beat everyone to three wins this season, which is a piece of trivia you can surprise your friends with a few weeks from now to enjoy a hearty laugh.

Andrew Wiggins hit clutch shots ? three 3-pointers in succession ? to help derail a Heat squad that looks awfully competitive despite missing Jimmy Butler due to the birth of his daughter. That could be a real knee-slapper if Wiggins regresses to what we?ve seen from 2014?s No. 1 pick thus far in his career.

The Canadian has teased with promise since bursting on the scene and left us wanting more time after time, topping out in 2017 with an impressive 23.6 points-per-game average bolstered by a 35 percent shooting clip from beyond the arc that remains his career-best. Those who forecasted that he?d lead the league in scoring have grown frustrated by him solely it in questionable shots as his efficiency has tanked over the past few years.

So, sure, Minnesota is 3-0. Wiggins played hero and scored 25 points, finishing 4-for-10 from 3-point range after knocking down the last four he took. He?d started the season 0-for-13. That?s amazing, but can also be described as simply being basketball, especially when you?re as gifted as the 24-year-old wing can be. The Timberwolves didn?t hand him a max contract for charity?s sake. We might be talking about the end of that win over the Heat as the beginning of Wiggins figuring something out, but that would be a na?ve take given what we?ve seen thus far.

Karl-Anthony Towns playing like there?s no tomorrow after opening last season a little listless due to all the Butler drama is far more predictable than Wiggins? streaky swings and is the No. 1 reason they?ve fared so well out of the gate. Although beating the Nets and Hornets on the road isn?t walking on water, just navigating opposing arenas early on does deserve credit, especially after surviving Kyrie Irving?s 50-point Brooklyn debut in a game he desperately wanted to win. Towns enters the week averaging 32 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, so if he gets sufficient help from Wiggins, the Timberwolves can return to the playoffs for just the second time since Kevin Garnett left in ?05.

Hearing Towns say that Wiggins knows when ?he has to kick it up? sounds like one of those things you say in the moment, because if he?d truly have time to think about it enough to offer an honest take, that hasn?t been the case. The Timberwolves have a healthy Robert Covington back and glue guys like Jeff Teague, Josh Okogie and Treveon Graham to put in work, but Towns needs Wiggins to take a superstar turn right alongside him or Minnesota is going nowhere in the loaded Western Conference.

The Wolves continue on the road this week in games at the 76ers on Wednesday and Wizards on Saturday, so it will be interesting to see what their record is when the Bucks come through Target Center for the team?s next home game on Nov. 4. Which Wiggins will show up in Philly and D.C.? That matchup with the Wizards is one in which they?ll likely enter as a road favorite, a role they handled nicely in a 121-99 rout in Charlotte.

Who?s Kendrick Nunn?
That question sounds absurd to me, but if you?re new to this column you probably don?t know that I consume college basketball the way koalas roll with eucalyptus, so I recognize why many are asking this and have probably never heard of the 24-year-old rookie leading the Heat in scoring (22.3 ppg).

Nunn dominated at Oakland the way a few players have over the past few decades, thriving in an up-tempo system that thrives on conditioning and scoring in spurts. He?s a high-school legend in Chicago, having played ball alongside Jabari Parker at Simeon, the same school where Derrick Rose and Benji Wilson once walked the halls. Things didn?t work out at Illinois after he caught a misdemeanor battery charge, so he ended up playing for the aforementioned Golden Grizzlies, lighting up the Horizon League.

Nunn led the nation in 3-pointers per made and was second only to Trae Young in scoring as a senior, but he went undrafted. He got himself a G-League gig with the Warriors and seemed like a natural fit but ended up getting scooped up by the Heat this past Spring and they?ve sprung him on the league with a bit of a ?look what we found? feel, starting him ahead of Goran Dragic.

Butler hasn?t played yet but should return this week and the Heat have gotten off to slow starts that required them to rally from 21 points down to post a 131-126 upset in Milwaukee and put them in an early bind in Minnesota, so Erik Spoelstra may ultimately have a decision to make as far as keeping Dunn in the starting lineup, but his early success is no fluke. He can play, is a natural scorer and fearless shooter and upgrades the talent level on the wing alongside rookie Tyler Herro, who has blended in nicely in his own right. Miami looks to be much improved after entering the season as a co-favorite in the Southeast alongside last season?s surprise winner, Orlando.

What?s going on with??

Markelle Fultz:
The 2017 No. 1 pick who forgot how to shoot is off to a productive start in Orlando despite opening 2-for-9 from beyond the arc over his first two games. He scored 12 points in each and showed a willingness to get to the basket that the Magic badly need, so it?s only a matter of time before he replaces D.J. Augustin in the starting lineup.

Orlando needs to develop him into being its closer because attempting to win games on Nikola Vucevic fadeaways or whatever Evan Fournier comes up with isn?t going to consistently deliver games in a division that has closers like Atlanta?s Young, Miami?s Butler and Washington?s Bradley Beal. The Magic squandered a huge lead and failed to cover in their opener against Cleveland and then came up short down the stretch because no one could be relied upon to score in the latter stages against the Hawks, who picked up a valuable early 103-99 win on Saturday night.

Keep an eye on Fultz?s development as the x-factor in whether Orlando is able to defend its division title and make some noise. Former lottery picks Jonathan Isaac and Mo Bamba also have to make strides, but Fultz can most impact this group if he gains Steve Clifford?s trust. After visiting Toronto on Monday, the Magic settle in for home games against the Knicks, Bucks and Nuggets this week, thrusting them into the spotlight.

The Warriors: After trailing by 31 points at the break in Oklahoma City on Sunday, Golden State fell behind by 42 in a game it never led, falling to 0-2 on the young season. They entered Monday?s visit to New Orleans looking for not just their first win of the season, but their first lead. The 141 points the Clippers scored to christen the brand-new Chase Center were the most ever surrendered under Steve Kerr.

Stephen Curry has struggled, but it?s the defense that has really brought about Golden State?s downfall. Namely, outside of Draymond Green, no one is doing it well. Kevon Looney is dealing with a hamstring issue and Willie Cauley-Stein sprained a foot and will likely be sidelined another week, so the team has been forced to throw Marquese Criss and a pair of undersized power forwards who won championships with Villanova, Eric Paschall and Omari Spellman, out there alongside Green to try and defend NBA bigs. It?s not going well.

The market hasn?t corrected itself enough, so there may be opportunities to fade Golden State as it returns home this week to face Phoenix, San Antonio and Charlotte. Who would have though the Dubs would be such an abomination this early? I saw a bounce-back coming against the Thunder after such an embarrassing first effort against the Clippers, but just watching this new concoction attempt to gel proved grueling to watch and it really looks like everyone is grinding their teeth attempting to find a comfort zone with one another. Things will probably gel at some point, but the fact the Warriors will play 13 of 17 on the road from Nov. 6- Dec. 6 isn?t going to aid their cause. Those who felt they wouldn?t make the playoffs and bet it at Westgate for a return of +250 are puffing those chests out for all to see.

Jrue Holiday: New team president David Griffin raised eyebrows when he tried taking pressure off Zion Williamson by saying that he expected Holiday to be the leader and step his game up to an MVP level. So far, Holiday has let him down, shooting 31 percent and 1-for-9 from 3-point range, but a knee issue is likely to blame and will hopefully not derail him long-term. He sat over the weekend against a Houston and is considered day-to-day entering the week, so we?re likely not going to see what the Pelicans are truly capable of until 2020. It remains to be seen whether Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart can keep the team afloat until then, but all are off to strong starts.

Games to watch

Monday - Thunder at Rockets:
Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul cross paths early, but this won?t at all match the intensity of Westbrook?s return to Oklahoma City, which happens only once this season (Jan. 9). Houston is trying to get Harden and Eric Gordon going but Mike D?Antoni is already using Westbrook to push tempo in a throwback to his ?seven seconds or less? days with the Suns. Paul has struggled early, doing his trade value no favors, but Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has hit the ground running in endearing himself to OKC fans as the prize in the deal for Paul George.

Tuesday - Mavs at Nuggets: Kristaps Porzingis looks to be in midseason form despite missing over a year of action, so Dallas has every right to be encouraged considering no sophomore slump is coming for Luka Doncic. This will be a fun one since Denver will be looking to send a message at home. The Mavs? ability to hang around should hinge on Porzingis and Maxi Kleber holding their own in the paint since Dwight Powell remains sidelined.

Wednesday - Bucks at Celtics: An early clash of East heavyweights allows Boston to test its nucleus at home after an impressive comeback win over Toronto, but hanging around on the boards will require a team effort since Enes Kanter is just coming back from a bone bruise. Daniel Theis and Robert Williams have been playing extended minutes since 7-foot-6 rookie Tacko Fall was also unable to start the season until the past weekend due to a concussion. Will Kanter return to help his new teammates with Greek Freak duty?

Thursday - Heat at Hawks: Atlanta can stick around in the Southeast race if its able to protect its home floor. Young looks quite comfortable there and has helped unlock John Collins? game with his lobs and command of the offense. Both should be All-Stars this season, but that?s easier said than done. With Butler expected to be back for this one, it will be fun to see him introduce himself to rookie wings DeAndre Hunter and Cam Reddish.

Friday - Pistons at Bulls: It?s unlikely that Blake Griffin is going to play since he?s taking his time coming back from knee and hamstring issues, so this will be an opportunity for the Baby Bulls to pick up a Central Division win as they try to mesh a year earlier than expected in overtaking the likes of Indiana and Detroit in the pecking order behind Milwaukee. Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine have each already had games where they?ve scored 35 or more points, but the key for this group lies in getting both going in the same contest.

Saturday - 76ers at Blazers: After missing the start of the season with an ankle injury, it looks like Joel Embiid should be in the mix all week barring a setback. He?ll be reunited with old friend Hassan Whiteside, who he loved to terrorize when he was with the Heat. Their beef often spilled over to social media, so it?s a shame they?ll only face off twice a season going forward. Whiteside helped swing a weekend win over the Kings with a big second-half spurt.

Sunday - Jazz at Clippers: These teams will have already squared off on Wednesday and should have some bad blood built up. Bojan Bogdanovic debuted with a strong outing, while Mike Conley has struggled to find a comfort zone in his new digs. Patrick Beverley will be heavily invested in keeping that from happening.

Free Winner
Friday - Spurs at Warriors: San Antonio has seen Dejounte Murray look like his old self and have Derrick White and Bryn Forbes back willing to play glue guy next to DeMar DeRozan. LaMarcus Aldridge is likely to feast in the paint, so expect San Antonio to win outright and don?t blink even if you have to lay points on the road.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the highest-paid college basketball coaches:

? Mike Krzyzewski, Duke $8.98M/year

? John Calipari, Kentucky $8.04M

? Mick Cronin, UCLA $5.5M

? Rick Barnes, Tennessee $4.7M

? Bill Self, Kansas $4.48M

? Chris Beard, Texas Tech $4.2M

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Glad to be back??

13) Here is a pro tip if you?re having surgery; go to the right bleepin? hospital.

Thats right, I show up 20 minutes early for my operation last Tuesday, but turns out I?m at Albany Medical Center when I?m supposed to be at Albany Memorial Hospital, which according to Mapquest, is 2.6 miles away. Not good, but we got there and the staff at Memorial couldn?t have been nicer.

12) Backtracking a little bit, couple of Saturdays ago I?m sitting in the sportsbook at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, watching college football and talking with a buddy, when the vision in my right eye became foggy. Had no idea what the problem was, but it didn?t get better, and after flying home that Tuesday, it got way worse. Turns out the retina in my right eye had detached.

On October 22 (the 47th anniversary of the Oakland A?s first World Series title), I had my right eye operated on, and now I wait and hope it bounces back to where it was. In the meantime, I?d like to thank anyone who sent a text, e-mail or called to offer help/best wishes. Much appreciated.

? Thanks to Dr Mallick, who was my eye surgeon; appreciate you answering all my questions, and obviously, thanks a lot for putting my eye back together. Thanks isn?t really enough to say, but I really appreciate your work.

11) Part of rehabbing your re-attached retina is having your head pointed down a lot, so I?m listening to TV more than watching it; two observations:

a) Joe Buck is very good at baseball play-by-play.
b) 86-year old Hubie Brown is still great fun to listen to on NBA games.

10) When Washington Nationals? OF Juan Soto was 10 years old, he played on an all-star team in the Dominican Republic that was coached by Robinson Cano?s father.

9) Since the start of last season, 56.4% of NBA players have changed teams, an amazing stat. NBA is the only league where the preseason is more interesting than the regular season.

8) A friend of mine here in Albany is opening a bar/golf simulator soon in Guilderland, out on Route 20 by Western Turnpike golf course. It is going to be called The Bunker, and once I get out and about more, I?ll give you an in-person report, but it sounds like an excellent place to hang out and have fun with friends.

7) Major league managerial hirings:
? Cubs hired David Ross, who was an active player only three years ago.
? Phillies hired Joe Girardi, an excellent hire.
? Angels announced hiring of Joe Maddon; he worked for the Halos for 30 years before he became a big league skipper in Tampa Bay.
? Maddon hired former Mets? skipper Mickey Callaway as his pitching coach.
? Padres hired 38-year old Jayce Tingler, who worked for years in the Texas Rangers? system.

6) Last Wednesday, the first full night of NBA games, 22 Kentucky alums played and first thing Thursday morning, John Calipari posted all their stats on Twitter. Effective recruiting tool.

5) NFL knowledge:
? Denver QB Joe Flacco (neck) is out for this week?s game with Cleveland. Brandon Allen is the new starter; he has never taken an NFL snap. Allen started for 2.5 years at Arkansas, where the Hogs went 15-11 his junior/senior seasons.
? Chargers fired OC Ken Whisenhunt Monday night.
? Texans? star DE JJ Watt is done for the season (torn pectoral muscle).

4) From ESPN stats: New Jersey Jets are first NFL team since the ?91 Colts who, through seven games, have fewer than 450 yards rushing, while giving up 200+ yards in sacks.

3) Of the 64 teams who trailed a World Series 3-2, 20 of them came back to win the Series.

2) Good news/bad news after my eye surgery:
Bad news: Had to cancel my annual Christmas trip to Las Vegas; can?t fly for a couple months after the surgery. I?ll survive, but I?ve enjoyed spending my birthday/Christmas in the desert.

Good news: Looking like a March trip instead; second weekend of NCAA tournament, and first week of baseball season.

1) Steelers 27, Dolphins 14? Monday, a gambler at South Point Casino in Las Vegas risked $100,000 to win $11,764.70 on the Steelers? money line. He had to sweat some in the first half, but he won his 11 grand.

Saturday, someone risked $5,040 to win $210 on Oklahoma?s money line to beat Kansas State; the Sooners lost, once again proving Oscar Madison?s old line from The Odd Couple:

?There?s no such thing as a sure thing; thats why they call it gambling.?

Butler debuts for Heat as Miami beats Atlanta 112-97
October 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Jimmy Butler made his first four shots and scored 21 in his Miami debut, rookie Tyler Herro scored 29 and the Heat defeated Atlanta 112-97 on Tuesday night in a game where Hawks star Trae Young left early in the second quarter with a sprained right ankle.

The 19-year-old Herro had a 19-point second quarter for Miami, while fellow reserve Goran Dragic scored 21. Bam Adebayo had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Miami and Kendrick Nunn finished with 17..

Young left with 9:56 remaining in the first half, turning his ankle when he landed on the foot of Miami's Justise Winslow. The reigning Eastern Conference player of the week - who had 102 points in Atlanta's first three games - finished with five points in 11 minutes.

John Collins scored 30 for Atlanta, including a career-best five 3-pointers, and Jabari Parker finished with 12 for the Hawks.

Butler missed the first three games of the season while celebrating the birth of his daughter Rylee. He was 5 for 11 from the floor, and went 10 for 15 from the line. As a team, Miami was 33 for 45 from the line - compared with 16 for 24 by Atlanta at the stripe.

Herro set a Heat record for points off the bench by a rookie, topping the mark of 28 set by Michael Beasley on March 4, 2009. And Herro and Dragic became the ninth Heat duo all-time to have 20-point games off the Miami bench on the same night.

MAVERICKS 106, NUGGETS 106

DENVER (AP) - Maxi Kleber had 14 points, seven rebounds and a key block late to help the Mavericks beat the Nuggets.

Nine Mavericks players scored in double figures on a night their two top scorers were held in check. Luca Doncic scored 12 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Nikola Jokic had his second triple-double of the season, with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, and Paul Millsap had 23 points and eight rebounds. Will Barton scored 19 but it wasn't enough to prevent Denver from losing its first game of the season.

The Mavericks rallied from 11 down in the third quarter on the strength of their support players. They did most of their damage after Denver took a nine-point lead late in the third quarter. Tim Hardaway Jr., who finished with 14 points, hit three 3-pointers and Dorian Finney-Smith two during a 30-10 run that gave Dallas a 103-94 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Nuggets chipped away at the lead and got within 107-106 on Gary Harris' 3-pointer and appeared to take the lead with 1:05 left when Maxi Kleber was called for goaltending on Murray's layup.

Dallas coach Rick Carlisle challenged the call and it was overturned after review, keeping Dallas ahead 107-106.

Doncic hit a driving layup and Jokic lost the ball out of bounds with 29.2 seconds left. After Doncic missed two free throws Jamal Murray, who had 16 points, missed everything on his 3-point attempt with 3.8 seconds left.
