Sunday?s 6-pack:
Since 2000, the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament:
2012? Norfolk State (+21) over Missouri
2018? UMBC (+20.5) over Virginia
2001? Hampton (+17.5) over Iowa State
2016? Middle Tennessee State (+16.5) over Michigan State
2021? Oral Roberts (+15) over Ohio State
2005? Bucknell (+14) over Kansas

Quote of the Day
???..for the next year? I?m gonna play football???I?m going to play football this year ? we?ll see where.?
Georgia Bulldogs QB Stetson Bennett

Sunday?s quiz
Before Saturday, Cincinnati?s last playoff win was in 1990; who played QB for the Bengals that day?

Saturday?s quiz
Michigan Wolverines were in the Final Four four years ago; John Beilein was their coach.

Friday?s quiz
TJ Yates was the Houston Texans? QB first time they played a playoff game, a 31-10 win over Cincinnati ten years ago.

**************************************

Sunday?s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

13) Bengals 26, Raiders 19:
? Raiders were in Cincinnati territory six times, scored only 19 points.
? Last time Bengals won a playoff game (1990), only four current Bengals were alive.
? Bengals are at Kansas City next week.

12) Bills 47, New England 17:
? Buffalo scored a TD on their first seven drives.
? Bills averaged 8.9 yards per play, converted 6-7 on third down.
? Buffalo and Tennessee meet next week in Nashville.

11) Joe Burrow sat on Ohio State?s bench before he transferred to LSU, where he led the Bayou Bengals to a national title. We should?ve realized back then that Urban Meyer wouldn?t be much of an NFL coach, with Burrow sitting behind JT Barrett and Dwayne Haskins.

10) Friday night, I?m watching the Iona-Manhattan game, with Rick Pitino coaching the Gaels, then little later on, the movie Blue Chips comes on, one of my favorite all-time movies.

Nick Nolte coaches fictional Western U; their first game in the movie, which was made in 1994, is against fictional Texas Western, coached by Rick Pitino.

28 years later and he?s still one of the best coaches in the game.

9) My all-time favorite movie scene in early on, with Nolte talking to his athletic director (Bob Cousy), while the Hall of Famer shoots free throws in shirt-and-tie. Cousy goes 10-for-10, and people who were there say the scene was filmed in one take. Cousy made the last foul shot with his left hand.

8) Someone on Twitter posted an old NFL Today clip, with Brent Musburger talking about a Lions-Patriots game in 1979; sitting in for Jimmy the Greek that day was Pete Rose.

I?m not making this up; Rose was handicapping NFL games on TV, seven years before he retired as one of the best baseball players ever, before his gambling exploits became a huge deal.

7) Eagles visit Tampa Bay Sunday; Philly is 0-6 this season against playoff teams.

6) Another trend that makes me queasy; Arizona is 6-0 SU this season as an underdog.

Another trend that makes me queasy; Arizona is 6-0 SU this season as an underdog.

6) Baylor/USC were the last two unbeaten teams in the country, but they both went 0-2 this week.

Something to set aside for March; Oregon swept the LA schools this weekend, which very seldom happens, and that will give them a big bump in the seeding, but there were no fans at either game. To me, that diminishes the feat somewhat. Ducks could become overrated.

5) College basketball upsets:
? Oklahoma State (+14) 61, Baylor 54
? Boston College (+10.5) 70, Clemson 68
? Northwestern (+9.5) 64, Michigan State 62
? South Florida (+8) 75, UCF 51
? Arkansas (+6.5) 65, LSU 58
? Oregon (+6.5) 79, USC 69
? Murray State (+6) 82, Belmont 60
? Portland (+6) 82, Pepperdine 63

4) Gonzaga 115, Santa Clara 83:
? First three WCC games, Zags scored 117-110-115 points.
? Gonzaga is shooting 63.7% inside arc this season.

3) East Carolina 72, Memphis 71:
? When season began, Memphis was a top 20 team; now they?re #42.
? Tigers are 4-7 in their last 11 games; they?re 1-5 in games decided by 6 or less points.
? Memphis is turning ball over 24.3% of time (#354 of 358 teams)

2) Pittsburgh 65, Louisville 53:
? Cardinals lost third straight game; as I type this, they?re #100 in country.
? Last time Louisville finished outside top 100 was 2001, Denny Crum?s last season.

1) TCU 59, Oklahoma 58 OT
? Sooners tied game on OB under play for layup at the buzzer of regulation.
? Teams combined to go 9-38 on the arc.
? TCU survived 5-11 shooting on foul line.

Monday?s 6-pack:
Some of the teams forcing the most turnovers this season:
26.3% of possessions? Texas
26.2%?VCU
26.2%? Iowa State
25.9%? LSU
25.4%? Texas A&M
25.3%? Tennessee

Quote of the Day
?You can shear a sheep many times but you can only skin him once.?
Amarillo Slim

Monday?s quiz
Who was the Steelers? QB before Ben Roethlisberger?

Sunday?s quiz
Before Saturday, Cincinnati?s last playoff win was in 1990; Boomer Esiason played QB for the Bengals that day.
(Really obscure trivia: Cody Carlson played QB for Houston that day)

Saturday?s quiz
Michigan Wolverines were in the Final Four four years ago; John Beilein was their coach.

******************************

Monday?s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday??..

13) Buccaneers 31, Eagles 15:
? Tampa Bay led 31-0 after three quarters.
? Eagles in first three quarters: 45 plays, 154 yards, no points.
? Brady is 35-11 in playoff games.

12) 49ers 23, Cowboys 17:
? San Francisco led 23-7 after three quarters.
? Dallas had ball in 49ers? territory when time ran out.
? Cowboys had 14 penalties for 89 yards.

11) Chiefs 42, Steelers 21:
? Game was scoreless after the first quarter.
? Steelers took 7-0 lead with a defensive score.
? Kansas City then scored a TD on its next six drives.

10) Spreads for next week?s playoff games:
? Bengals @ Tennessee (-3.5)
? 49ers @ Green Bay (-5.5)
? Bills @ Kansas City (-2.5)

9) Dak Prescott holds an NFL record, throwing for 974 yards in consecutive games LY (Weeks 3-4). Problem is, he got hurt in Week 5 and was lost for the rest of the season.

Dallas won the NFC East this year, Prescott had a good season, but now he is 1-3 in playoff games, and there are rumblings that coach McCarthy?s job is on thin ice.

Prescott threw for 254 yards Sunday, was sacked five times; Dallas had 14 penalties. Whose fault is that? It is debatable, but Jerry Jones may not want to lose OC Kellen Moore, and may promote him to head coach at a fairly young age. That would make McCarthy the fall guy for Sunday?s loss.

8) Las Vegas Raiders made the playoffs this year, despite a minus-9 turnover ratio, and with a defense that gave up 35 touchdowns on 43 red zone drives. Tons of distractions, on and off the field, but the interim coach kept the group together- they won six games on last play of the game, an NFL record.

Doesn?t Rich Bisaccia deserve a shot at the fulltime head coaching job?

7) I?m guessing the fine folks at NBC were grumbling about the lousy Sunday night game; had the Chargers won/tied last week, they would?ve knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs, and the Sunday night game this week might?ve been more competitive.

6) Cincinnati 61, Wichita State 57? Shockers are off to a disappointing 0-4 start in AAC.

5) St John?s 88, Georgetown 69? This is Patrick Ewing?s fifth year coaching the Hoyas; his record in Big East conference games? 26-47.

At what point does Ewing go on the hot seat? He?s the school?s most prominent basketball alumnus, but 26-47 is 26-47.

4) Iona 78, Niagara 55? I hear this Pitino guy is a pretty good coach; Gaels are 6-0 in the MAAC- they?re 26-9 in 1.5 years under the Hall of Fame coach.

3) Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant sprained his knee, is out 4-6 weeks.

2) If you like high school basketball, ESPNU has four consecutive games on Monday, starting at 11am. Teams from all over the country facing off.

1) If you coach/teach basketball to kids, do this demonstration; show them that a basketball hoop is exactly two basketballs wide. This surprises most everyone; with the rim ten feet high, it doesn?t look that big, but you can place two basketballs in a hoop? sometimes that makes a shooter more confident.

Tuesday?s 6-pack:
? Purdue 96, Illinois 89, 2OT? This seemed like a Final Four game.
? Wyoming 77, Nevada 67? Cowboys are a surprising 13-2.
? NC-Wilmington 86, Charleston 78? Seahawks are 3-0 in CAA.
? Wagner 95, FDU 64? Seahawks shot 67% inside the arc.
? Weber State 78, Idaho State 61? Weber is atop Big Sky at 5-1.
? Arizona State 64, Utah 62? ASU was a horrendous 3-12 on foul line.

Quote of the Day
?People give effort to what is important to them.?

Tuesday?s quiz
Where did Ben Simmons play his one year of college basketball?
Hint: His team didn?t make the NCAA tournament

Monday?s quiz
Tommy Maddox was the Steelers? QB before Ben Roethlisberger.

Sunday?s quiz
Before Saturday, Cincinnati?s last playoff win was in 1990; Boomer Esiason played QB for the Bengals that day.
(Really obscure trivia: Cody Carlson played QB for Houston that day)

********************************

Tuesday?s Den: What are Final Four teams made up of?

13) Last four national titles were won by a #1-seed; last national champ that wasn?t a #1-seed? Villanova, six years ago- they were a #2-seed.

12) eFG% (FG%, but where a 3-pointer counts as 1.5 made baskets) seems to be a big indicator of NCAA Turney success.

Last four tournaments, nine of 16 Final Four teams were in the top 40 nationally in eFG%; 12 of 20 were in the top 100. Last three national champs ranked #1-19-7 on eFG%.

11) Depth means very little; last four years, only one of 16 Final Four teams was in the top 150 in bench minutes for that season. Longer TV timeouts, refs calling fewer fouls fuels that theory.

10) Last four Final Four?s teams, by seed #:
#1? seven
#2? two
#3? three
#5? one
#7? one
#11? two

9) Defensive eFG% is also a solid indicator:
? 13 of last 16 Final Four teams were in top 100 in eFG% defense
? 8 of last 16 were in the top 50.

There are always exceptions, which is what makes handicapping interesting; Baylor won the national title last year- their eFG% defense was ranked #121, but they ranked #4 in forcing turnovers.

South Carolina made the Final Four in 2017; I wouldn?t have bet on them with your money, but they got there as a #7-seed. Like Baylor, they were strong at forcing turnovers (#5)

I have 17 categories on my chart here; 14 of the last 16 Final Four teams were in the top 11 nationally, in at least one category.

8) 3-point shooting has become more and more important; last three tournaments, 9 of 12 Final Four teams ranked in the top 50 in 3-point shooting %age.

7) Teams that get a lot of their points on the foul line don?t get to the Final Four much, adding to the theory that refs call fewer fouls in March Madness.

Last four tournaments, only 1 of 16 Final Four teams (that 2017 South Carolina squad) ranked in the top 100 in %age of points scored on foul line. No other team ranked in the top 150.

6) Strength of schedule is an indicator; 12 of last 16 Final Four teams ranked in top 50 in strength schedule; Gonzaga?s two Final Four trips are two of the four schedules that fell outside the top 50 (72-89).

Today?s Gonzaga program is like UNLV was thirty years ago; very big fish in a small pond.

5) Does experience matter? 12 of last 16 Final Four teams were in top 100 of experience; only 6 of 16 Final Four teams were in the top 100 of continuity.

Sadly, there is no metric for TALENT; good/great players win championships, in any sport.

So what teams, at this point, figure to be favorites in March:
4) eFG% leaders:
? Gonzaga
? Purdue
? Davidson
? Loyola, Chi

Also, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arizona, Kentucky

3) defensive eFG% leaders:
? Indiana
? LSU
? San Diego State
? Arizona

Also, VCU, USC, Gonzaga, UConn

2) 3-point %age leaders:
? South Dakota State
? Davidson
? Purdue
? North Carolina

Also, Colorado State, Michigan State, Loyola Chi, Murray State

1) Teams with most experience:
? Providence
? Florida
? Texas
? St Bonaventure

Also, Buffalo, Seton Hall, SMU, Drake

These numbers will change over the six weeks; we?ll keep an eye on them before we predict who will be in the Final Four

Wednesday?s 6-pack:
? Seahawks fired DC Ken Norton Jr; there have to be scapegoats.
? Kansas 67, Oklahoma 64? Sooners lost four of their last five games.
? Davidson 63, VCU 61? Wildcats are 15-3, haven?t lost since November 18.
? Dayton 68, St Bonaventure 50? 12-6 Flyers are least experienced team in country.
? Kansas State 66, Texas 65? Wildcats were an 11-point underdog.
? Florida State 79, Duke 78 OT? Duke lost two of three true road games.

Quote of the Day
?I think what will help us is to run out of a tunnel and play in front of fans. I think it?s hugely demoralizing to our guys to play games in empty arenas when there?s 80,000 people at the Rams game yesterday.?
UCLA basketball coach Mick Cronin, whose Bruins play at Utah this week

Wednesday?s quiz
Scottie Pippen?s son plays for Vanderbilt; where did Pippen go to college?

Tuesday?s quiz
Ben Simmons played his one year of college basketball at LSU.

Monday?s quiz
Tommy Maddox was the Steelers? QB before Ben Roethlisberger.

*******************************

Wednesday?s Den: Mid-week musings??..

13) October 2008, I went to the Tennessee-South Carolina football game in Columbia; game was at night, we sat in lawn chairs in a field all afternoon, watching a big-screen TV that was in the luggage compartment of a Winnebago. There was a satellite dish on the bus. Fun day.

Three things I remember about that day:
? Had Church?s fried chicken for first time; it is great fried chicken.
? I had never met the guy who owned the Winnebago; he owned arcades throughout the south. At one point, he looked at me and asked, ?Where you from? You talk funny.? I told him New York and asked him to pass me some more fried chicken.
? We spent about an hour that day discussing the merits of a QB who was still in college; my friend knows more about football than I do, but on this point, I was right.

Matthew Stafford is a really good quarterback.

12) I was very happy for Stafford Monday night; he gets the monkey off his back with his first playoff win, now he can just relax and win some more games.

11) Rams 34, Cardinals 11:
? Rams led 14-0 before Arizona had a first down.
? Murray threw a horrendous pick-6 to make score 21-0.
? Rams were 6-13 on third down, Cardinals 0-9.

10) These are the top two seasons ever by an NFL receiver, in terms of yardage:
a) 1,964 yards? Calvin Johnson 2012
b) 1,947 yards? Cooper Kupp 2021

Two great receivers having great years; the common thread?
Matthew Stafford was the QB for both of those teams.

9) Kupp had 848 yards after catch this season, 78 yards more than anyone else.

8) Las Vegas Raiders fired GM Mike Mayock after three years as GM; Raiders were 25-24 in Mayock?s tenure. Hope he goes back on NFL Network; he does good work analyzing players.

7) Last 11 times the Dallas Cowboys were in the playoffs, they fell short of the Final Four, the conference championship games. Last time they made the Final Four was 1995, when Barry Switzer was their coach and they won their third Super Bowl in four years.

Will they let another team hire Kellen Moore as their coach or will they fire Mike McCarthy and make Moore their head coach? Interesting decision.

6) I?m officially sick of the Manning family; enough already. Eli never said a freakin? word when he played; now you can?t shut him up, unless his brother is yakking.

It?ll be interesting down the road when Eli Manning comes up for the Hall of Fame, how his 111-111 regular season record will be judged. He won two Super Bowls, but 111-111 isn?t a first ballot Hall of Fame resume.

Jim Plunkett won two Super Bowls, also had a .500 regular season record; he ain?t getting into the Hall of Fame. Manning will get in, but shouldn?t get in on the first ballot.

5) QB Hunter Johnson was Clemson?s 3rd-string QB in 2017, then transferred to Northwestern, where he played four years. Now he is going back to Clemson, where I?m assuming he?ll be the Tigers? QB next fall. College quarterbacks have become nomads.

4) Miami 85, North Carolina 57? Yikes, ugly loss for the Tar Heels, who are now 12-5, 4-2 in ACC play, but only 2-5 against top 100 teams.

3) Iona 86, Monmouth 85 (OT)? Rick Pitino?s Gaels are 15-3, 7-0 in MAAC; at some point this coming spring, some big $$$ school is going to come after the 69-year old Pitino to be its hoop coach. Would he leave Iona to venture back into the big time?

2) Timberwolves 112, Knicks 110? Couple minutes after this game ended, maybe two minutes after, Karl Anthony Towns(Minnesota?s best player) is standing on the court, talking to someone on a cellphone. Never saw that before.

1) We live in a fickle society; there is the old saying ?We?re with you win or tie, but we?re not that crazy about tie? Teams that win get praised or ignored; teams that lose, well everyone should be fired/traded.

Hell, Bill Belichick was taking grief on social media last weekend. Guy made the playoffs with a rookie QB this season; that doesn?t happen a lot, but he hasn?t won a playoff game the last three years, so the natives are restless. Forget the six Super Bowls he won; that was all Brady.

I once was an assistant high school basketball coach; guy I worked for is a great guy, he said something that stopped me in my tracks. We won our first game of the year, lost our second game by a lot, and couple of the players didn?t react to it very well.

The head coach says in the locker room after the game, ?Well, it didn?t take long for the rats to start jumping off the ship? Had to hide my face, it made me laugh, but he was right. We live in a fickle society.
