Thursday?s Den: Doing some thinking out loud??..
13) Arkansas 77, LSU 76:
? Arkansas won last two games by total of three points.
? Razorbacks shot 57.6% inside arc.
? Teams combined to make 42-47 on foul line; good to see!!!
12) Texas A&M 87, Alabama 71:
? Aggies outscored Alabama 50-31 in second half.
? Alabama is a weird team; 47.3% of their shots are 3?s, but they?ve only made 31.3% of those 3?s (#291). Very difficult team to handicap.
11) Auburn 81, Mississippi State 68 OT:
? Auburn led by 12 at halftime.
? MSU shot 50% inside arc, 0-13 outside arc.
? Bulldogs lost eight of last 12 games.
10) Creighton 64, UConn 62:
? Creighton never trailed; they led by 16 in first half.
? Bluejays are 5-0 vs UConn the last two seasons.
? Huskies shot 6-22 on arc, 2-5 on foul line.
9) Duke won the ACC?s regular season basketball title this year, first time they?ve done that since 2006. ACC is down this year, the 6th-ranked league, their worst rating in nine years. Duke has won seven games in a row.
Speaking of Duke, they have a baseball player Chris Davis, whose dad is Rece Davis, the ESPN anchor. Chris Davis used to play baseball at Princeton; few years ago, he ruptured his spleen after a collision in the outfield, and needed two operations to recover. Scary thing.
8) Big South tournament? all four games were tied with 0:06 left in regulation
? NC A&T 78, Radford 71 OT? Aggies had lost nine of previous 11 games.
? Charleston Southern 79, NC-Asheville 78? Bucs got tap-in at buzzer for the upset.
? High Point 84, Hampton 77 OT? There were 79 foul shots in this game.
? Campbell 75, Presbyterian 72, 2OT? Camels win on Wednesday (Hump Day) Presbyterian was only 12-23 on foul line in a double overtime loss.
7) George Washington 98, Duquesne 93, 3OT:
? 7 points was biggest lead either team had the whole game.
? Senior Night at GW; four seniors started, played 3:00 each.
? Duquesne is coached by Keith Dambrot, Lebron James? high school coach; they?ve lost 15 games in a row.
6) DePaul 91, Marquette 80:
? Depaul scored 58 points in second half.
? Marquette is 3-5 in last eight games; they?re experience team #350, very young.
? Marquette played 7 freshmen, one junior, two seniors.
5) UNLV 64, Wyoming 57:
? Rebels are 18-12, 10-7; Kevin Kruger has done a nice job in his first year at UNLV.
? UNLV star Hamilton went 3-15 from floor and they still won; impressive.
? This was Wyoming?s fourth game in eight nights; tough stretch.
4) Wednesday was the 60th anniversary of the night that Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors against the Knicks. Wilt was freakin? awesome.
Warriors won the game 169-147; the game was in Hershey, PA. Not a lot of defense.
Wilt played all 48:00; he 36-63 from the floor, 28-32 on foul line, had 25 rebounds. I repeat, he played all 48:00? there was no load management back then.
3) Arizona Cardinals gave GM Steve Keim, coach Kliff Kingsbury contract extensions after the Redbirds went 11-7 this past season. No word yet on QB Kyler Murray?s contract.
2) Baltimore Ravens? QB Lamar Jackson is apparently negotiating his own contract extension with the Ravens, not using an agent. Saves you the 3% commission, but he doesn?t have a deal yet, either. Jackson will make $23.016M this coming season.
Ravens say that Jackson hasn?t shown much interest in getting a new deal done. Unusual.
1) I?ve started spending more time recently listening to the VSIN radio network on I-Heart radio, a station dedicated to sports/gambling. Lot of interesting stuff, but why in God?s name do people wager on the NFL Draft? Chances are the oddsmakers have better info than the bettor.
Couple of the VSIN guys were discussing NFL futures for 2022; how can you bet on anything before you see the schedule, which is released in April? Plus there figure to be lot of QB trades this offseason; lot of depth charts are going to look different in September than they do now.
