Wednesday’s 6-pack
NBA’s worst teams against the spread this year:
30-49-3— Dallas, Miami
32-46-4— San Antonio
36-45-1— Atlanta, Houston
37-42-3— Detroit, Memphis, Washington
39-43— Golden State
38-42-2— Charlotte

Quote of the Day
“You’re a goddamn quarterback!!! You know what that means? It’s the top spot, kid. It’s the guy who takes the fall. It’s the guy everybody’s looking at first – the leader of a team – who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. ‘Cause you make them believe. That’s a quarterback.”
Al Pacino, from Any Given Sunday

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, what semi-famous actress plays the salary cap manager for the Cleveland Browns?

Tuesday’s quiz
Philadelphia 76ers lost the most NBA games ever in one season, going 9-73 in 1972-73.

Monday’s quiz
2015-16 Golden State Warriors went 73-9, the most regular season wins in one season.

************************************************** ************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings………

— We were talking about Ted Williams at lunch Tuesday; the guy’s record was amazing. He had a career on-base %age of .482, a tremendous number.
From 1941-49, Williams led the league in walks six times; in the other three years, he didn’t play, he was flying combat missions in World War II. In his career, Williams had 2,654 hits and walked 2,021 times. His last year in the majors, at age 41, he hit .316. Excellent.

Tampa Bay 5, Boston 2
Rays are 11-0, best start by a big league team since the ’87 Brewers started out 13-0. Those Brewers wound up 91-71 and finished third in their division.

— I switched my TV system from DirecTV to YouTube TV because YouTube has the NFL Sunday Ticket now. Tuesday, they announced what it will cost me.
Last year, the Sunday Ticket was $290; this year………
If you subscribe to YouTube TV, it’ll be $349, but only $249 if you pay by June 6.
$289 if you bundle with RedZone and buy it by June 6
If you don’t subscribe to YouTube TV, it’ll be $449, but $349 if you pay by June 6.
$389 if you bundle with RedZone and buy it by June 6
So I will actually save $41 this year. Good for me.

Marlins 8, Phillies 4— Luis Arraez is the first Marlins player to hit for the cycle; I’d be more enthusiastic about it if he wasn’t playing against my fantasy team this week.

— Padres’ reliever Brent Honeywell is the nephew of Mike Marshall, who was a really good reliever for the Dodgers in the early 70’s. Marshall appeared in 263 games from 1972-74; he threw 208 innings in 1974, and he didn’t start any games.

Cardinals 9, Rockies 6— Colorado led 6-2 after six innings, but St Louis scored seven runs in three innings against the Rockies’ bullpen. Nolan Arenado knocked in three runs against his old team.

Orioles 12, A’s 8— Ryan Mountcastle went 3-4, knocked in nine runs; Orioles rallied from a 7-2 deficit against woeful Oakland, which has lost six games in a row.

Brewers 7, Arizona 1— Game was scoreless after six innings; Burnes threw 8 shutout innings, allowing only three baserunners.

Giants 5, Dodgers 0— Season is 12 days old; Mets and Dodgers are both 6-6, Cardinals are in last place. Small sample size, but a slow start for some of the league’s favorites.

Rangers 8, Royals 5 (10)— Jonah Heim hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning; Texas lost Corey Seager to a hamstring injury, but they won this game and lead the AL West at 7-4.

Angels 2, Washington 0— Ohtani threw seven shutout innings, allowing one hit.

Cubs 14, Mariners 9— Seattle is off to a slow 4-8 start, 1-4 in one-run games; the last two years combined, Mariners were 67-41 in one-run games.

— Baseball injury stuff:
Milwaukee P Brandon Woodruff goes on the IL with shoulder inflammation
Texas SS Corey Seager left Tuesday’s game with a hamstring injury.
White Sox SS Tim Anderson is out 2-4 weeks with a sprained knee.

— In the NHL, the team with the best regular season record wins the President’s Cup; over the last 35 years, only 8 of 35 President’s Cup winners have also won the Stanley Cup— last team that did it was the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks.

— Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes are bringing the NHL to Australia next fall; they’re going to play a couple of preseason games there.

Hawks 116, Heat 105— Atlanta led 65-50 at halftime, gets a road play-in win, after a 41-41 regular season. Hawks’ four subs who played were a combined +28.
Hawks move on to a first round series with Boston; the Heat will play winner of the Toronto-Chicago game Friday for the #8 spot in the East.

Lakers 108, Minnesota 102 OT— Minnesota led 60-49 at halftime, then they scored a combined 16 points in the 4th quarter/overtime. Lakers advance to play Memphis in a series that starts on Sunday.
Timberwolves will play the Pelicans-Thunder winner on Friday night; winner of that game will play #1-seed Denver in the first round of the playoffs.

Thursday’s 6-pack
Favorites to win the Stanley Cup playoffs:
3-1— Boston Bruins
13-2— Colorado Avalanche
8-1— Edmonton Oilers
10-1— Carolina Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights
12-1— New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs
14-1— Dallas Stars

Quote of the Day
“This week, the Phillies initiated the plan. They are preparing Harper to play first base later this season. This does not affect his timetable to return to the Phillies’ lineup — he will still return as the designated hitter because he will be cleared to hit in games before he is cleared to throw. But if Harper takes to the new position, the Phillies think it could allow him to return to the field sooner than if he played right field.”
Matt Gelb, from The Athletic

Thursday’s quiz
In the movie Blue Chips, what real-life basketball Hall of Famer plays the athletic director at Western U, where Nick Nolte’s character is the coach?

Wednesday’s quiz
In the movie Draft Day, Jennifer Garner plays the salary cap manager for the Cleveland Browns.

Tuesday’s quiz
Philadelphia 76ers lost the most NBA games ever in one season, going 9-73 in 1972-73.

*******************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……..

— Tampa Bay 9, Boston 7
Rays are 12-0, baseball’s best start since 1987.
Taj Bradley allowed three runs in 5 IP in his MLB debut.
Tampa Bay’s magic number to clinch the AL East: 147.

— Dodgers 10, Giants 5
Max Muncy hit two homers; he is 5-9 with four homers, 11 RBI the last three games.
Giants lost four of their first six home games.

— Arizona 7, Brewers 3
Rookie Jameson tossed four scoreless IP (54 PT) in his first ’23 start.
Diamondbacks are in first place in the NL West.

— Marlins 3, Phillies 2 (10)
Banged-up Phillies are 4-8, 4.5 games behind the first place Braves.

— A’s 8, Baltimore 4
Brent Rooker homered, knocked in three runs.
Carlos Perez went 3-4, with a homer and two RBI.
$59M A’s host the $375M Mets this weekend; should be a lot of fun.

— Toronto 4, Detroit 3 (10)
Tigers led 3-1 after eight innings.
Toronto tied game in 9th on two sac flies.
George Springer had a walk-off single in the 10th.
Detroit has lost six in a row, is 2-9 this season.

— Braves 5, Reds 4— Both starting pitchers (Greene/Strider) got 20+ whiffs; that doesn’t happen a lot. Greene got 21 whiffs on 54 swings, Strider 22 whiffs on 56 swings.

— Twins 3, White Sox 1— Not sure why Sonny Gray came out after throwing five scoreless IP and only 78 pitches, but Minnesota is 8-4 and leads the AL Central by 1.5 games.

— Highest-paid major leaguers in 1985:
$2.13M— Mike Schmidt, Phillies
$2.09M— Jim Rice, Red Sox
$1.95M— George Foster, NYM
$1.745M— Dave Winfield, NYY
$1.728M— Gary Carter, NYM
$1.6M— Dale Murphy, Atl

— White Sox reliever Joe Kelly got hurt Sunday, pulling a leg muscle while running in from the bullpen to join a benches’ clearing fracas in a game at Pittsburgh. Only in baseball does a guy get hurt running to a fight, especially a fight that never happened.

— Chicago Cubs signed 2B/OF Ian Happ to a 3-year, $61M contract extension. Cubs are off to a 6-5 start this season.

— Texas Rangers SS Corey Seager hurt his hamstring, is out a minimum of four weeks; this all happened because the Royals shifted against Seager- they put their LF in short RF, leaving left field wide open. Seager dumped a ball into the left field corner, was looking down there as he turned first base, trying to decide if he would go for a triple, when his hamstring went. Not good.

— Former Arizona Cardinals’ coach Kliff Kingsbury will be an offensive analyst at USC this year, where he will work with Caleb Williams, the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this year.

— Iona’s Nelly Junior Joseph transfers from Iona to New Mexico; he was a back-to-back MAAC first-team player who played the past three years for Rick Pitino. Now he will play next season for Richard Pitino with the Lobos.

— Bulls 109, Raptors 105— Toronto led by 19 in the third quarter; they made only 18-36 foul shots. Chicago visits Miami Friday; winner plays a first round series against the Bucks.

— Thunder 123, Pelicans 118— OKC outscored the Pelicans 39-24 in third quarter; Josh Giddey scored 31 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed nine rebounds. Thunder visits Minnesota Friday night; winner of that game plays Denver in a first round series.

“With Lamar, you want to bring safeties down to help stop the run. You don’t really fear Lamar’s accuracy all the time. He’s got a huge arm, he can make things happen when he scrambles, but you don’t fear him just sitting in the pocket and picking you apart.”

18-1— Minnesota Wild, Tampa Bay Lightning

**********************************************

Saturday’s Den: XFL trends, and wrapping up a busy Friday

— Heat 102, Bulls 91— Heat outscored Chicago 35-23 in last quarter; they advance to play the Bucks in the first round of the playoffs. Max Strus scored 31 points, making 7-12 on the arc.

— Timberwolves 120, Thunder 95— Minnesota outscored OKC 58-30 in the paint; they face #1-seed Denver in a best-of-seven series starting Sunday night. Rudy Gobert returned from his one-game suspension, had 21 points, 10 rebounds.

— Blue Jays 6, Rays 3— Tampa Bay won’t go unbeaten this year; they also lost P Jeffrey Springs (elbow) for at least two months. Not the best day for the Rays, but they’re still 13-1.

— Brewers 11, Padres 2— San Diego has a huge payroll; right now they’re 7-8 and look lethargic. Maybe I’m bitter because I traded for Juan Soto in my fantasy league and he looks awful, hitting .189 thru 15 games.

— Boston Red Sox are only team in the major leagues that haven’t had a starting pitcher throw a pitch in the sixth inning so far this season. Short starts puts a strain on a team’s bullpen. Red Sox are 6-8, in last place in the AL East.

— Guardians 4, Nationals 3— Cleveland is 6-2 on road, 2-4 at home. 8 of their 14 games (5-3) were decided by one run.

— Marlins 5, Arizona 1— Small sample size obviously, but Miami is 7-7, an improvement. They won four of their last five games.

— Braves 10, Royals 3— Atlanta scored seven runs in first two innings, hitting three homers. Austin Riley hit his 100th career home run.

— Cubs 8, Dodgers 2— Justin Steele is 2-0, 1.42 in his first three starts; Cubs led this game 3-2 after seven innings, then broke game open late. Dodgers are 7-7, have lost five of their last seven games.

— Orioles 6, White Sox 3— Chicago led 3-0 after six innings, then their bullpen imploded; Adley Rutschman knocked in three runs, also walked three times. Orioles are 8-6; are they good enough to contend for a Wild Card spot?

— NBA fined the Dallas Mavericks $750,000 for “conduct detrimental to the league” in an elimination game against the Chicago Bulls on April 7- they sat a lot of their best players, so they would lose and miss the playoffs, while keeping a draft pick they would’ve lost had they made it to the playoffs.

— Top five seeds in the NBA’s Western Conference playoffs have won a combined one NBA title, and that was when the Rochester Royals (now the Sacramento Kings) won a championship, way back in 1951.

— Teams that have won the NBA play-in games to advance into the playoffs are 0-9 in those playoff series.

— 2B Edouard Julien of the Minnesota Twins is the first MLB player in the modern era to have his first two career hits come in the 1st inning of the same game- he did that Thursday, when the Twins scored nine runs in the first inning in the Bronx.

Jhony Brito started that game for New York. His season so far:
First two starts: 10 IP, 8 baserunners, 1 run allowed, 2 wins.
Third start: 0.2 IP, 7 baserunners, 7 runs allowed, one loss.

— San Francisco Giants/P Logan Webb agreed to a 5-year, $90M contract extension.

— Red Sox have now lost 13 games in a row at Tampa Bay.

— Rory McIlroy skipped the RBC Heritage tournament this week; because of that, the PGA Tour will reportedly dock McIlroy $3M of the $12M he earned from his finish in the Player Impact Program last year.

This year, the 23 golfers who cashed in from the PIP are required to play all but one designated event in 2023 to receive their winnings. McIlroy missed the Tournament of Champions in January, so he was docked 25% of his winnings from the PIP, when he missed his second event of the season.

— TJ Bamba transferred from Washington State to Villanova; Bamba averaged 15.8 ppg for the Coogs last year. There are over 1,400 names in the college basketball transfer portal.

Baker Dunleavy quit as basketball coach at Quinnipiac, to become the general manager of Villanova’s basketball program. I’m thinking that he is overseeing the transfer portal, which is how Bamba winds up bolting from Wazzu to the Wildcats.

— This is Zion Williamson’s 4th year in the NBA; he’s played in 37% of the Pelicans’ games, for which he’s been paid $44,261,137. The last two years, he played in 29 of a possible 164 games.

Good work, if you can get it.

— Washington Commanders were sold for $6B this week; that’s Billion, with a B; last NFL team that was sold was the Denver Broncos last year- they sold for $4.65B. Carolina Panthers were sold for $2.28B in 2018.

Guy that bought the Commanders also owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, NHL’s New Jersey Devils. Oh, and the guy who owns the Cleveland Browns just bought the Milwaukee Bucks.

Must be nice to be rich.

— Three teams that have never had the #1 pick in the NFL Draft:
