Quote of the Day

“A reform that has been of interest to ownership for a number of years is a limitation of contract length……those (long) contracts result in a transfer from the current stars to yesterday’s stars. At some point, that has to be true. And I think it is an issue that is important for us to stay focused on, because it creates inflexibility that affects the quality of the teams that you put on the field.”

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred

Thursday’s quiz

Wednesday’s quiz

Thursday’s Den: XFL trends, and other relevant Thursday things…….

— Mets 5, Dodgers 3
Max Scherzer was tossed in the 4th inning; a sticky substance dispute.
Brandon Nimmo went 5-for-5, hit a home run for the Mets.
Dodgers are 9-10 and look very ordinary.

— Pirates 14, Rockies 3— Pittsburgh outscored Colorado 33-9 in their three-game sweep; Pirates are 12-7, would be in the playoffs if they started today.

— Padres 1, Braves 0— San Diego has scored total of two runs in their last four games; Martinez tossed seven shutout IP, Soto homered for the only run.

— Bronx 3, Angels 2 (10)— Judge homered, also made two great catches that both saved a run; two teams were a combined 1-24 with runners in scoring position.

— Brewers 5, Mariners 3— Milwaukee is 6-0 in games where the winning run scored from the 7th inning on.

— Orioles 4, Nationals 0— Baltimore is 11-7; just like the Pirates, if the season ended now, they would make the playoffs.

— Cincinnati Reds signed P Hunter Greene to a six-year, $53M contract extension. Greene has started 28 games for the Reds; he is 5-13, with a 4.42 ERA.

— Josiah Gray pitches for Washington; in his last three starts, the Nationals lost 1-0/2-0/1-0. Not a lot of support there.

— It can’t be a lot of fun being a mid-major college basketball coach; Kansas Jayhawks just poached a player from Towson State. Nick Timberlake scored 17.7 ppg in 35.7 minutes/game this past year, shooting 41.6% on the arc. Shooting is marketable.

When a player plays 35.7 minutes/game, it means he is indispensable; Towson was 21-12 this past season, 12-6 in the CAA, a good team- they’re 46-21 the last two years, but now they’re going to regress, because their best guy just jumped ship to play in the big time.

— Chris Ledlum scored 18.8 ppg, grabbed 8.4 rebounds/game for Harvard last year; he goes to Tennessee as a grad student, choosing the Vols over Indiana.

— Home teams won all three NBA games Wednesday; Heat-Bucks, Lakers-Grizzlies series are both 1-1. Nuggets beat Minnesota 122-113, lead that series 2-0.

— Since 1997, LA Lakers have won 30 consecutive playoff series when they won Game 1, the NBA’s longest-such streak; the next three longest streaks:

Bulls 24 (1990-98)
Celtics 24 (1957-73)
Rockets 17 (1975-97)

— NFL Draft starts a week from tonight; there are five teams that don’t have a first round pick this year. One of the teams, the LA Rams, haven’t had a first round pick since they took Jared Goff in 2016. Rams do have their first round pick next year.

— There is an Arena Football team here in Albany, the Albany Empire, which plays in the National Arena League, which has seven teams, two of them in Texas; former NFL WR Antonio Brown recently became the majority owner— he owns 95% of the team.

Since Brown took over the team, he fired the head coach (who won the championship the last two years), and then the director of media relations and team president also left the team. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Long time ago, Brown’s father Eddie Brown was a great WR for the Albany Firebirds in the Arena Football League; Firebirds won the Arena Bowl in 1999. Eddie Brown once scored seven TD’s in a game— right now, he is the Empire’s vice president of operations.

1.211— Matt Chapman, Tor

1.136— Brandon Marsh, Phil

1.071— Luis Arraez, Miami

1.057— Max Muncy, LA

Quote of the Day

“You could see what the game plan was. Got to hit him, try to make me frustrated so I could get ejected. So, I’m too mature to put myself in a position where I’m going to be ejected, so I just went about my business and we got the win.”

Joel Embiid

Friday’s quiz

Which current NBA team used to call Cincinnati home? They were the Cincinnati Royals back then.

Thursday’s quiz

2014 was the last time the Angels made the playoffs.

Wednesday’s quiz

Clint Hurdle was the Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager in 2015, last time they made the playoffs.

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

— It figures that Thursday was the best day the Oakland A’s have had in two years; they didn’t play a game.

Season is 22 days old; A’s don’t have a win from a starting pitcher yet- they’re 3-16 and are a terrible team. They were in the playoffs as recently as 2020, but they’ve dumped all their good players because God forbid they pay anyone a lot of money.

Reliever Trevor May is making $7M this year, the A’s highest-paid player; he just left the team to deal with anxiety issues. Their entire payroll appears to be $59,305,000, less than Trout/Ohtani’s combined salaries.

The Mets have 12 guys who are all making $10M+ each this season.

The good news came from off the field; the A’s announced very late Wednesday night that they’ve bought 49 acres of land in Las Vegas, and will build a a retractable roof dome west of the strip, across the I-15 highway from T-Mobile Arena, where the NHL’s Golden Knights play.

The new stadium is expected to be ready in 2027; no word on where the A’s will play for the next three years. Their AAA team plays in a nice but small 6,000-seat stadium in Summerlin, a Las Vegas suburb, that is an option. They could play “home” games in San Francisco or stay in Oakland for a while, but those would be two very awkward options.

At least there is some closure to this situation now; once the Tampa Bay stadium is settled, then MLB can get around to its next big thing, adding two expansion teams, to get to 32 big league teams, with expansion fees helping teams recoup some of the money they lost out on in 2020.

— Great news from White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks, who reported Thursday that he is cancer free and in remission. Hendriks said in January that he had non-Hodgkins’ lymphoma, so it is excellent to hear that he is on the road to recovery.

— Pirates 4, Reds 3— Pittsburgh is much improved at 13-7; their starting pitcher has lasted 6+ innings in their last ten games, with Pirates going 7-3 in those games. In this day and age, if your starting pitcher is getting you 18 outs, that takes lot of strain off your bullpen.

— Rockies 5, Phillies 0— Colorado ends its 8-game losing skid; the home plate umpire was Brian Knight, who acted like he bet the under in this game. Every marginal pitch in this game, for both sides, was called a strike. He called Jurickson Profar out on a 3-2 pitch because of a pitch clock violation; it was marginal at best. Am looking forward to seeing his pitch chart tomorrow.

Observation; the new rules are fine and all, but NO ONE wants to see a guy called out on a 3-2 pitch in the 8th inning on a marginal pitch clock violation. People pay to watch baseball, not to watch an umpire strangle the game.

— There was a report on ESPN Thursday that Shohei Ohtani will explore free agency if the Angels miss the playoffs this year, which complicates things for the Angels.

They cannot let Ohtani walk and get nothing in return; that would be malpractice, but they also won’t get value for him if they deal him, since there is no guarantee that Ohtani would sign with the team he gets traded to, unless they negotiate a sign-and-trade before the deal happens.

Right now, the Angels are 9-10; they’re 0-5 in games where winning run scored from 7th inning on. At what point do the Halos throw in the towel and start talking trades?

— Interleague play so far this season: National League leads, 36-34.

— Arizona Diamondbacks DFA’d P Madison Bumgarner, even though they still owe him $34M in future salary; Bumgarner is 0-3, 10.26 in four starts this season, was 7-15, 4.88 in 30 starts last year.

— Minnesota Twins won all four of Joe Ryan’s starts this year, scoring 37 runs.

— MLB suspended Mets P Max Scherzer for 10 games, after he was ejected Wednesday for a sticky stuff violation.

— Dodgers 6, Cubs 2— James Outman hit a 9th inning grand slam that was the game-winning hit; Dodgers even their record at 10-10.

— 76ers 102, Nets 97 (Philly leads, 3-0)
Sixers outscored Brooklyn 26-15 in 4th quarter.
Tyrese Maxey hit a 3-pointer with 0:44 left for the game-winning hoop
Brooklyn has lost its last nine playoff games.

— Warriors 114, Kings 97 (Sacramento leads, 2-1)
Steph Curry scored 36 points, was +24.
Kevon Looney grabbed 20 rebounds, dished out 9 assists.
De’Aaron Fox scored 26 points, had 9 rebounds and 9 assists.

— Suns 129, Clippers 124 (Phoenix leads, 2-1)
Phoenix outscored Clippers 75-73 in a frenetic second half.
Devin Booker scored 45 points for the Suns.
Kawhi Leonard didn’t play for the Clippers.

— Happy 80th birthday to the great basketball analyst Bill Raftery, who has been coming into our living rooms on TV for the last 40 years. Raftery was Seton Hall’s coach when the Big East first started. Happy birthday coach!!!
