Quote of the Day
“You’re a goddamn quarterback!!! You know what that means? It’s the top spot, kid. It’s the guy who takes the fall. It’s the guy everybody’s looking at first – the leader of a team – who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. ‘Cause you make them believe. That’s a quarterback.”

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings………
— We were talking about Ted Williams at lunch Tuesday; the guy’s record was amazing. He had a career on-base %age of .482, a tremendous number.
From 1941-49, Williams led the league in walks six times; in the other three years, he didn’t play, he was flying combat missions in World War II. In his career, Williams had 2,654 hits and walked 2,021 times. His last year in the majors, at age 41, he hit .316. Excellent.

Tampa Bay 5, Boston 2
Rays are 11-0, best start by a big league team since the ’87 Brewers started out 13-0. Those Brewers wound up 91-71 and finished third in their division.
— I switched my TV system from DirecTV to YouTube TV because YouTube has the NFL Sunday Ticket now. Tuesday, they announced what it will cost me.
Last year, the Sunday Ticket was $290; this year………
If you subscribe to YouTube TV, it’ll be $349, but only $249 if you pay by June 6.
$289 if you bundle with RedZone and buy it by June 6
If you don’t subscribe to YouTube TV, it’ll be $449, but $349 if you pay by June 6.
$389 if you bundle with RedZone and buy it by June 6
So I will actually save $41 this year. Good for me.

Marlins 8, Phillies 4— Luis Arraez is the first Marlins player to hit for the cycle; I’d be more enthusiastic about it if he wasn’t playing against my fantasy team this week.
— Padres’ reliever Brent Honeywell is the nephew of Mike Marshall, who was a really good reliever for the Dodgers in the early 70’s. Marshall appeared in 263 games from 1972-74; he threw 208 innings in 1974, and he didn’t start any games.
—
Cardinals 9, Rockies 6— Colorado led 6-2 after six innings, but St Louis scored seven runs in three innings against the Rockies’ bullpen. Nolan Arenado knocked in three runs against his old team.
—
Orioles 12, A’s 8— Ryan Mountcastle went 3-4, knocked in nine runs; Orioles rallied from a 7-2 deficit against woeful Oakland, which has lost six games in a row.
—
Brewers 7, Arizona 1— Game was scoreless after six innings; Burnes threw 8 shutout innings, allowing only three baserunners.
—
Giants 5, Dodgers 0— Season is 12 days old; Mets and Dodgers are both 6-6, Cardinals are in last place. Small sample size, but a slow start for some of the league’s favorites.
—
Rangers 8, Royals 5 (10)— Jonah Heim hit a walk-off homer in the 10th inning; Texas lost Corey Seager to a hamstring injury, but they won this game and lead the AL West at 7-4.
—
Angels 2, Washington 0— Ohtani threw seven shutout innings, allowing one hit.
—
Cubs 14, Mariners 9— Seattle is off to a slow 4-8 start, 1-4 in one-run games; the last two years combined, Mariners were 67-41 in one-run games.
—
Baseball injury stuff:
Milwaukee P Brandon Woodruff goes on the IL with shoulder inflammation
Texas SS Corey Seager left Tuesday’s game with a hamstring injury.
White Sox SS Tim Anderson is out 2-4 weeks with a sprained knee.
— In the NHL, the team with the best regular season record wins the President’s Cup; over the last 35 years, only 8 of 35 President’s Cup winners have also won the Stanley Cup— last team that did it was the 2013 Chicago Blackhawks.
— Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes are bringing the NHL to Australia next fall; they’re going to play a couple of preseason games there.
—
Hawks 116, Heat 105— Atlanta led 65-50 at halftime, gets a road play-in win, after a 41-41 regular season. Hawks’ four subs who played were a combined +28.
Hawks move on to a first round series with Boston; the Heat will play winner of the Toronto-Chicago game Friday for the #8 spot in the East.
—
Lakers 108, Minnesota 102 OT— Minnesota led 60-49 at halftime, then they scored a combined 16 points in the 4th quarter/overtime. Lakers advance to play Memphis in a series that starts on Sunday.
Timberwolves will play the Pelicans-Thunder winner on Friday night; winner of that game will play #1-seed Denver in the first round of the playoffs.
