Monday’s quiz
Hall of Fame QB Kurt Warner played his college football at Northern Iowa.

Sunday’s quiz
Dan Quinn was the Falcons’ coach the last time they played in the Super Bowl.

********************************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but……..

This needs to be said first today……in 2017, when the Rams hired Sean McVay as coach at age 30, the Rams had missed the playoffs 13 years in a row. Now they’ve made it to the playoffs six times in eight years, won two NFC titles and a Super Bowl.
McVay is well on his way to getting a gold jacket in Canton.

— Rams 27, Vikings 9
Rams sacked Sam Darnold nine times, scored a defensive TD.
LA’s first two drives: 15 plays, 132 yards, 10 points.
In regular season, Rams were outscored 92-30 in first quarter.
Rams advance to to play the Eagles in Philadelphia Sunday.

— Rutgers 75, UCLA 68
UCLA has lost four in a row, after an 11-2 start.
Rutgers was 21-32 on foul line, Bruins 12-15.
Scarlet Knights shot 56.2% inside the arc.
Just second win in last six games for Rutgers.

— Maryland 77, Minnesota 71
Gophers led by 7 early in the second half.
Maryland shot 55.6% inside the arc.
Home team is 6-0 in Maryland’s conference games.
Minnesota drops to 0-6 in the Big 18.

— Wofford 81, Furman 62
7-point underdog Terriers led by 40-20 at halftime.
Wofford was 13-32 on the arc, Paladins were 8-34.
Wofford had 20 offensive rebounds, out-rebounded Furman 52-35

— Elon 81, Campbell 68
Elon improves to 12-5, 3-1 in the CAA.
Elon shot 63.3% inside the arc.
Elon has #23 eFG% defense in country.

— Notre Dame 78, Boston College 60
Notre Dame led by 2 with 10:00 left in the game.
Notre Dame was 23-27 on foul line, Eagles were 6-6.
Boston College slips to 1-5 in ACC games.

Famous birthdays, January 14:
Faye Dunaway, 84
Swen Nater, 75
Ron Behagan, 74
LL Cool J, 57 (real name James Todd Smith)
Jason Bateman, 56
Byron Leftwich, 45
Aaron Brooks, 40
D’Andre Swift, 26

— NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed is going to be offensive coordinator next fall at Chamblee HS in Georgia. Lot of former players have turned to high school/small college coaching.

— The last running back to win a rushing title and a Super Bowl in the same season?
Denver’s Terrell Davis, in 1998.

— Mike McCarthy is apparently out after coaching the Dallas Cowboys for five years, going 49-35 in regular season, 1-3 in playoff games. Where Dallas goes from here for a coach will be very interesting to watch.

— Michael Cooper spent his entire 12-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers as a defense-minded guard who helped the Showtime Lakers win five NBA titles. Cooper played in 76+ games in 10 of his 12 NBA seasons.
Monday night, the Lakers retired Cooper’s #21, putting it in the rafters between #32 of Magic Johnson and James Worthy’s #42.

— Seattle Mariners signed IF Donovan Solano for one year, $3.5M; Solano can earn an additional $1M in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $200,000 each for 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500.
Solano has played for six teams in his 11-year career; last year, he hit .286 in 96 games for Seattle, with an OPS of .760. He plays all over the infield, which makes him more marketable in today’s baseball.

— Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki, who is expected to be a big star, has narrowed his field of potential suitors down to three teams: Dodgers, Padres, Blue Jays.
The window for signing international players opens Wednesday and stays open for 8 days.

— On my flight home from Las Vegas 10 days ago, was thinking again how amazing it is to me how something as big as an airplane lands so easily on the airport runway. I get queasy more than landings than take-offs, but there isn’t any reason to, other than me thinking too much.

— The other night I stumbled upon an NFL Films show on the Roku Channel, about the 2023 draft. The show featured on the draft rooms of Panthers, Jaguars, Colts, Cowboys.
It was startling that two of Jerry Jones’ grandsons were sitting just behind him near the head of the table, and that he asked them questions a couple times. He pays his scouts/coaches a ton of money, not sure why he was asking the young people questions, though one of them had gone to school with a player that Dallas was considering taking.
Anyway, if you have the Roku Channel and you like the NFL, it is worth watching.

— Troy Aikman said something startling on SportsCenter after the Wild Card Game Monday night; Scott Van Pelt called the Cowboys’ head coaching job “a coveted job” but Aikman didn’t agree, saying it wasn’t a coveted job, inferring that the front office interferes enough that it makes the coach’s job more difficult than it should be.

— Minnesota Vikings went 14-4 this year; two different times, they lost consecutive games to the Lions/Rams- they were 0-4 against those teams, 14-0 against everyone else.

— As I type this, Ravens are a 1-point road favorite in Buffalo Sunday night; this would be the first time in 19 home NFL playoff games that the Bills have been an underdog.

— Ex-UNLV QB Matthew Sluka, who played at Holy Cross before transferring to UNLV, has now transferred to James Madison, where he re-unites with coach Bob Chesney, who coached him at Holy Cross.
Sluka played three games for UNLV this year but bolted after three games because of a dispute over NIL money; Rebles played better when Hajj-Malik Williams became UNLV’s QB.

— Cleveland Browns named TE coach/tight ends coach pass game specialist Tommy Rees their new offensive coordinator, replacing Ken Dorsey, who was fired after one season.

Six of the least experienced teams in college basketball:
— IU Indy (Horizon)
— Tarleton State (WAC)
— Tennessee-Martin (OVC)
— Eastern Washington (Big Sky)
— Citadel (Southern)
— Fresno State (Mountain West)

Quote of the Day
“This time of year doesn’t really reward you to be timid.”
Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford

Thursday’s quiz
What Hall of Fame coach led both the Rams and Eagles to a Super Bowl?

Wednesday’s quiz
Baltimore Ravens came into being in 1996; they weren’t an expansion team; they were the Cleveland Browns, before they moved to Baltimore.
The Browns were an expansion team starting in 1999, but the NFL let them keep all the old Browns’ records.

Tuesday’s quiz
In the movie Oceans Thirteen, Ellen Barkin played Al Pacino’s assistant, running the new Bank Casino.

*********************************************

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

— Our thoughts go out to Chargers’ coach Jim Harbaugh, who will have a cardiac ablation this offseason. Harbaugh had an issue this season with atrial flutter, a type of arrhythmia that causes the heart to beat at an abnormally high rate.
Harbaugh wore a heart monitor for two weeks during the season.
He will also have a hip replacement during this off-season.

— Iowa State 74, Kansas 57
Cyclones have won 12 games in a row; their only loss was on November 25.
Iowa State is forcing turnovers 22.3% of time (#18)
Kansas is 5-4 in its last nine games, after a 7-0 start.
Jayhawks are only 13-10 in their last 23 Big X regular season games.

— Butler 82, Seton Hall 77
Bulldogs snap their nine-game losing skid.
Butler shot 65.5% inside the arc.
Seton Hall has lost seven of its last eight games.

— Fort Wayne 120, Wright State 113, 2 OTs
Wright State led by 5 with 0:29 left in the first OT.
Fort Wayne shot 16-33 on the arc, scored 1.32 points/possession.
Fort Wayne was +9 in turnovers (16-7).

— LaSalle 79, Davidson 76
Davidson led by 17 with 4:40 left in first half,
Explorers were 16-23 on foul line, Davidson 6-8.
Deuce Jones played all 40:00, had 23 points, five assists.

Famous birthdays, January 16:
Glen Walker, 73
Dave Stapleton, 71
Gerald Henderson, 69
Jack McDowell, 59
Don MacLean, 55
Joe Horn, 53
Jack Cust, 46
Albert Pujols, 45
Joe Flacco, 40
Mark Trumbo, 39
Brendan Donovan, 28
Andrew Nembhard, 25

— Chattanooga 83, Wofford 81 OT
Wofford led by 6 with 1:07 left in regulation.
Wofford led 34-14 midway thru the first half.
Chattanooga shot 16-33 on the arc.

Upsets of the Night:
George Mason (+7.5) 67, Dayton 59
Mercer (+5.5) 73, Samford 70
Duquesne (+4) 73, George Washington 65

— Texas Longhorns’ QB Quinn Ewers declared for the NFL Draft; he was 21-5 as the Texas QB, led Longhorns to the national semi-finals the last two years. He threw for 3,472 yards this year, with 31 TD’s, 12 INT’s.

— Chicago Bears have already interviewed 11 people for their vacant head coaching job; the Jets have interviewed 10 candidates for their head coaching job.

— When ESPN has Sunday Night Baseball, teams are only allowed to be on five times a year; the Dodgers’ five appearances will all be in the first ten weeks of the season.

— The International Signing Period in baseball started Wednesday; Orioles signed 22 players

— A’s signed an 18-year old Japanese kid for $1,510,500; he plays shortstop and pitches.
Two things are unusual here:
1) Japanese players very rarely skip the NPB completely before they bolt the country.
2) The A’s paid a living human being $1.5M to play ball; good for them.

— OF Manuel Margot played for the Twins last year; he was 0 for 30 as a pinch-hitter, he hit .263 in his other 285 at-bats.

— Roy Hibbert is a studio analyst for CBS Sports Network; he told a story Tuesday night, about when he was playing and had a rough game, as he walked to the locker room, a disgruntled fan said to him, “I hope you tear your ACL”
Fans can be fickle, for sure.
