16.4%— Bailey Ober, Minn
16.3%— DJ Herz, Wash
16.2%— Tanner Bibee, Clev

Quote of the Day
“OK, you’re either going to draft me or you’re not. If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault. You’ve got to remember you’re the same team that’s got to play me for the rest of my career, and I’ll remember that.”
Miami Hurricanes QB Cam Ward, who will be drafted into the NFL in April

Tuesday’s quiz
What is the only American League team that has never had a pitcher win the Cy Young award?

Monday’s quiz
In the TV show Ted Lasso, an English soccer team hires a new coach, who used to be the football coach at Wichita State.

Sunday’s quiz
Butler lost the national championship game two years in a row, in 2010/2011; they were in the Horizon League back then, which is how coach Brad Stevens vaulted into the NBA.

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Red Sox signed 3B Alex Bregman last week for three years, $120M; they’re not saying where Bregman will play in the field this year, but incumbent 3B Rafael Devers had a lot to say about the situation Monday.

“No. Third base is my position. It’s what I play. I don’t know what their plans are. We had a conversation. I made it clear on what my desires were. Whatever happens from here, I don’t know.”

Devers is a three-time All-Star, has played third base for Boston since 2017 and got a big $$$ contract from the Red Sox two years ago.
Bregman could play second base, but they also have Kristian Campbell, a 2B who is a highly-thought of prospect.

— Kansas Jayhawks are 8-6 in Big X this season, 3-4 in their last seven games. They’re ranked 23rd by the AP this week, the lowest they’ve been ranked since 2009 (they were also #23 in February, 2021).

— Northern Iowa 74, Murray State 67
Game was moved to Nashville, after there was a power outage on the Murray State campus, which caused this game to be postponed Sunday.
Northern Iowa was 20-26 on foul line, Racers were 8-12. Panthers have won five in a row, nine of last 11 games. Murray State is 3-8 in its last eleven games.

— Duke 80, Virginia 62
Duke shot 61.1% inside the arc.
Blue Devils out-rebounded Virginia, 41-24.
Three of Duke’s five starters are freshmen.

— TV recommendation; Suits LA starts on NBC Sunday night, a spin off from the old USA Network show. It is about a former New York prosecutor who starts law firm in Los Angeles that specializes in criminal and entertainment law.
Aaron Korsh is the creator; he also did the original Suits, so this figures to be a very good show.

— Angels’ star Mike Trout is switching from center field to right field this year, as he tries to stay healthier as he gets older.
33-year old Trout has played in only 266 games the last four years. Angels haven’t made the playoffs since 2014; they haven’t won a playoff game since 2009.

Somehow, the Angels are actually paying 3B Anthony Rendon more than Trout, and now it looks like Rendon’s career might be over. If his Angels’ stint is over, Rendon will have played a total of 257 games, out of a possible 1,032, while banking $228M from the Halos.

— Things can fall apart quickly; four years ago, the White Sox over/under win total was 91.1 wins, for the 2021 season. This year, it is 61.5.
Last year, the Pale Hose went 41-121. No bueno.

— Mets P Frankie Montas has a high-grade lat strain, is likely out until Memorial Day— this is an injured muscle around the rib cage. Montas has been shut down for 6-8 weeks, and then will start his season over from scratch from there.

— Arizona Diamondbacks gave SS Geraldo Perdomo a 4-year, $45M contract extension; 25-year old Perdomo hit .273 with a .718 OPS last year, in 98 games.

— Kansas City Royals signed P Cole Ragans to a 3-year deal worth $13.25M; Ragans was 11-9, 3.14 in 32 starts for the Royals last year, helping the Royals make the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

— This will be the 21st year of our fantasy baseball league, a dynasty league with 14 teams in it. Our first draft took 81 days to finish. The first two players I drafted were Matt Holliday and Adam Dunn, two very different hitters.
Dunn walked a lot and hit a lot of home runs. From 2005-08, he hit exactly 40 home runs four years in a row, which doesn’t seem possible. He hit 462 home runs, had a career OPS of .854.
He was the kind of player Billy Beane talked about in Moneyball; when Dunn was 34, at the tail end of his career, he played 25 games for the A’s, but by then, he was washed up. He did help my fantasy team a lot though, when he played for Cincinnati.

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— Spring training is a week old; the Red Sox already have a lot of drama, as the players are voicing their opinions as to which well-paid star should play third base this year.

Tuesday, 1B Triston Casas chimed in with his opinion:
“I think it’s Raffy Devers’ position. He’s done it for a really long time now and I think he’s only getting better at that position… I think he’s the best third baseman in the league. I wouldn’t take anybody over him.”

Someone needs to tell Cases that since coming to the major leagues, Devers has been the worst defensive third baseman in the big leagues- that includes all 103 players who have played 750+ innings at the hot corner.

— There is an interesting podcast on YouTube for two hours every weekday: Foul Territory, which has former big league catchers AJ Pierzynski, Erik Kratz, with host Scott Braun and an assortment of other people- Todd Frazier is on a decent amount.

Monday, they had agent Scott Boras on for an hour, which is unusual for this show, but Boras had a lot to say and it was interesting to listen to him talk about how teams spend/don’t spend their money.

Boras is basically a scum weasel lawyer who screws over the cheap teams, but I’m bitter because I root for the A’s. He’s the best agent in baseball, for his clients, at least.

Someone said Tuesday that this winter alone, with the new contracts Boras has negotiated for his clients, his company has banked $95M. Thats million, with an M

Tuesday, Foul Territory had Will Carroll on; he is a writer who specializes in the coverage of medical issues. He was interesting to listen to; he suggested that Giancarlo Stanton doesn’t actually have “tennis elbow” in both elbows, he has some other injury in the elbow that was just easier to describe as tennis elbow..
Anyway, the show is worth listening to; lot of stuff to learn.

— Chicago Cubs signed IF/DH Justin Turner to a one-year, $6M deal; Turner will be playing for his 7th major league team- he hit .259 with 11 homers LY in 139 games for Toronto/Seattle.

— Since 2012, San Diego State has made nine of 12 NCAA Tournaments; they’ve made the finals of the Mountain West tournament 11 times in those 12 seasons, but were only 3-8 SU in those 11 finals- they get at-large bids into the NCAA’s, so not a huge deal, just unusual.
Aztecs are 5-3 in the first round of their last eight NCAA tourneys; they were national runner-up two years ago, but for some reason, the finals of the conference tournament has been a problem.

— When Championship Week starts next month, no team will have more pressure on them than the Toledo Rockets in the MAC.
The last four years, Toledo has won the MAC’s regular season every year, but never won the MAC tournament, which is the only way a MAC team is making the NCAA’s.

This year, Toledo is 8-4 in the MAC, in third place; Akron is 12-0 in the MAC, so for once, the Rockets won’t be favored to win the tournament.
Toledo hasn’t been in the NCAA Tournament since 1980.

— Cincinnati Bengals’ QB Joe Burrow has a $46.3M cap hit next season; now it is up to the Bengals’ front office to re-sign WR Ja’Marr Chase and fortify the team’s offensive line to make sure Burrow has the best chance to earn all that $$$.

— Carolina Panthers re-signed backup QB Andy Dalton for two years, $8M; Dalton was a mentor for young QB Bryce Young last fall. Young played way better in the second half of the season, and Dalton’s contract says he had a lot to do with it.

Thursday’s 6-pack:
Six players drafted ahead of Stephen Curry in 2009:
1- Blake Griffin, Clippers
2- Hasheem Thabeet, Grizzlies
3- James Harden, Thunder
4- Tyreke Evans, Kings
5- Ricky Rubio, T’wolves
6- Jonny Flynn, T’Wolves
7- Stephen Curry, Warriors
Minnesota passed twice on Curry………Oy

Quote of the Day
“I think everybody here believes in their abilities. I think all of us believe that if we all put together a good effort this season, we have a really good chance of being a winning baseball team. For me, I can only talk for myself, I’ll play wherever it helps the team win.”
Alex Bregman

Thursday’s quiz
New York Knicks have won only two NBA titles, in 1970, 1973; who was the Knicks’ coach in those years?

Thursday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

— Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander fired his agent this week, will now represent himself.
Next season, Gilgeous-Alexander is expected to make $38,333,050. Friend of mine told me an agent makes 5%, so that means by firing his agent, Gilgeous-Alexander will save himself an impressive $1,916,652.50, just for one season.

— There is an actual baseball game on TV Thursday; Cubs-Dodgers at 3:00, as Cactus League play begins. Temperatures here in beautiful upstate New York will actually get over freezing this weekend. Spring isn’t far away!!!
Spring training games have an extra twist this year, over 60% of spring training games will have an automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system as MLB continues to move closer to using it during the regular season, which won’t happen this season, if ever.
Each team will be given two challenges per game and will retain successful challenges.
AAA minor league baseball will use the challenge system during the 2025 regular season, giving MLB as much information as possible before a decision is made on 2026.

— ESPN will have the Milwaukee-Bronx game on TV Opening Day; Joe Buck will do play/play, with Joe Girardi, Bill Schroeder doing analysis. Have always thought that Joe Buck is better on baseball than football (he is good at both), but ESPN says this is just a one-time deal.

— Sacramento/Las Vegas A’s gave manager Mark Kotsay a contract extension thru 2028, which is when the A’s are supposed to re-locate to Las Vegas.
Kotsay is a good manager; the A’s played .500 ball after the All-Star break last year.

— Random trivia: When Magic Johnson was the first pick of the 1979 NBA Draft, Larry Bird wasn’t in that draft- the NBA had different rules back then.

2nd pick in the 1979 draft was David Greenwood, a forward from UCLA who played 12 years in the NBA, mostly for the Bulls. He scored 10.2 ppg in his career.

Larry Bird was the 6th player taken in the 1978 draft; somehow he was eligible to be drafted in 1978, but if the Celtics hadn’t signed him before the ’79 draft, he would’ve gone back in the ’79 player pool. Bird had a great season, and the Celtics signed him.

Here are the five players drafted ahead of Bird in 1978:
1- Mychal Thompson, Portland (Klay Thompson’s father)
2- Phil Ford, Kansas City Kings
3- Rick Robey, Indiana
4- Michael Ray Richardson, NYK
5- Purvis Short, Golden State

— NFL salary cap is going to jump between $22-26M for 2025, meaning the league’s salary cap will have jumped roughly $55M over the last two years.

— Philadelphia Eagles started this past NFL season in Brazil, then won the Super Bowl; LA Chargers are going to open next season in San Paolo, on Friday night in Week 1.

10 things to keep an eye on in Canada-USA 4 Nations Final

TORONTO — Hockey is a low-scoring game, so it’s not always easy to tell who’s got the upper hand. Plus, with the way momentum works in hockey, that “upper hand” can flip in an instant.

But if you watch enough of these big games, there are patterns. And given that I expect Canada-USA, Part Deux, to be another low-scoring affair, I thought I’d give viewers a few things to keep an eye on to get a sense for how the game is going.

Below are thoughts on some of the big names, and big scenarios, that will decide the first (and only) 4 Nations Face-Off champion.

You can watch the game live Thursday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT.

Keep an eye out for the spacing on Canada’s two best forwards

I think you have to start here. Losing Charlie McAvoy hurts the U.S., as it's suddenly not a very physical back-end. Jaccob Slavin has an exceptional stick but has a Lady Byng Trophy for a reason. Jake Sanderson, Adam Fox and Zach Werenski are not bruisers. If Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon feel comfortable repeatedly dashing into the slot, it’s going to open up a lot of room for their linemates.

Keep an eye on Cale Makar

In Game 1 against the U.S., the Canadians had trouble getting pucks to the inside and through to Connor Hellebuyck. But if you watch that last game back, plenty of forwards got to the net, they just couldn’t get the puck there with them. So, how are Makar’s legs early? Does he have jump? He’s deceptive enough to make fakes at the blue line, to walk the line and pump shots, and to create lanes. If Makar looks good, bet on him getting a puck through in a big spot for Canada.

Keep an eye on Brady Tkachuk

In a draft of players around the league I’d start a team with, I have Brady Tkachuk way higher than most. But my criticism of his game is that it’s immature. He gets caught up in the chest-puffing machismo of the game, when you’d rather see him play the dangerous brand of hard hockey he showed against Finland. Is he running around after guys and being a sideshow? Or is he concentrating on playing? For a player who’s always engaged, it’s not terrible for Canada if he’s engaged in the wrong stuff.

Keep an eye out for a tight whistle, which would help Canada

First off, let’s take a second to appreciate the officiating in this tournament. We only notice it when it’s bad and, well, it’s been great. Outside the fighting majors, Canada has taken three minor penalties in three games (and is three-for-three on kills). The Canadians have been on the power play for a whopping four minutes and 12 seconds (one-for-three). I expect this to get tested a bit more in the final. There’s going to be desperation, which leads to last-second grabs and holds. And combine that with the refs being on high alert for “fireworks,” and I expect more special teams.
If it’s a game where the officials use their whistles, it’ll be a slight advantage for Canada, who has the world’s three best players in McDavid, MacKinnon and Makar.

Keep an eye out for goalie nerves

Hellebuyck is the best goalie in the world, Jordan Binnington is not. Binnington has a reputation as a big-game goalie, while Hellebuyck does not. Calm and composed goalies don’t over-push past shots. They control rebounds, catch pucks and don’t seem frantic. So, let’s keep an eye out early for how these two react to the initial frenzies around them. It might give us a clue into how they’re feeling and, in turn, what to expect in the biggest moments.

Keep an eye on Auston Matthews

His first game against Canada was more like Jordan Staal than Auston Matthews, in that he blocked shots and backchecked and defended like hell for the U.S., but wasn’t an offensive threat. He’s needed time off this year for what’s believed to be a sore back. He missed a game this week for what is apparently a different issue. If he’s fresh and feeling better, has he got more jump? If he’s barreling through the neutral zone early, that’s a sign he’ll be dangerous all night, and the U.S. team will need him to answer the top Canadian forwards.

Keep an eye on how heavily the stars are used

It has to be exceedingly tempting for Canadian coach Jon Cooper to put McDavid or MacKinnon on the ice for every second of the hockey game. And, with so much talent on the roster, they’ve not played massive minutes in this event. Plus, they’re coming off a few days' worth of rest, so they could handle a bigger workload.

But if the game is close, you don’t want them to have been leaned on too heavily. In the final, overtime will be five-on-five until somebody scores, and this game has the potential to go long. How much gas will Cooper and the Canadian coaches make sure is left in the tanks of their top threats?

Keep an eye out for the next layer of scorers

The U.S. put the boots to Finland, but it scored just twice against Canada (plus an empty-netter), and once against Sweden. Beyond the Tkachuks, who are gobbling up the headlines, the Americans' top offensive players aren’t exactly physical players, just mostly slick — think Jack Hughes, Jack Eichel, Jake Guentzel and Kyle Connor. Those guys can get bogged down in a game where nobody wants to make a mistake, so they err on the side of heavy defence. But the guys who go park around the nets tend to find greasy goals. Think Chris Kreider, Brock Nelson, Matt Boldy. It’s the blue-paint guys who can sneak up on you.

For Canada, that means Sam Bennett, Anthony Cirelli and Brandon Hagel types. It wouldn’t be shocking to get a big moment from a 12th or 13th forward.

Keep an eye out for Canadian experience
The Canadian roster has won a combined 20 Stanley Cups to the Americans' three. They’ve played in the big moments, felt the pressure and persevered. Sidney Crosby is tied for the tournament lead in points, and has the ability to calm the troops and not get lost in the moments when they come (as we saw when he iced the Finland game). If there are big mistakes in the final game, Canada's experience factor makes it feel less likely it'll come from their side.

And, finally ...

Keep an eye on that start

Obviously. In Canada, it felt like their opponents had to weather the storm before playing their way back into it (which both Sweden and the U.S. accomplished). Do the players still prioritize having a punch-off, or will they skip sending the messages in favour of trying to score goals?
We won’t see three fights in nine seconds, but I’m still unsure how the teams are prioritizing that aspect of the game at this point. Either way, Thursday's 4 Nations Face-Off final is going to be must-see TV.

Quote of the Day
“Unfortunately in recent years, we have seen ESPN scale back their baseball coverage and investment in a way that is not consistent with the sport’s appeal or performance on their platform.
Given that MLB provides strong viewership, valuable demographics, and the exclusive right to cover unique events like the Home Run Derby, ESPN’s demand to reduce rights fees is simply unacceptable. As a result, we have mutually agreed to terminate our agreement.”

Friday’s Den: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

— Since I watch too much TV, I have two TV recommendations today:

1) Red Storm Rising- A Hard Knocks-type show about Rick Pitino/St John’s basketball, which airs on Vice TV. I found it on YouTube, since I don’t think I get Vice TV. Saw the first couple episodes; very well done. If you like college basketball, it is worth your time.

2) Underrated- Apple TV has a 90-minute show about Steph Curry, which focuses more on his college days at Davidson than his NBA career, but it shows both.
Curry is one of the best 10-15 players ever; he is the best shooter ever. It is interesting that he seems to be a fairly normal person. Wish they had shown the time he made 90+ 3-pointers in a row after a practice, but this was a really good show that I enjoyed watching.
Trivia; In his first college game ever, Curry had 13 turnovers, against Eastern Michigan; team had 30 turnovers overall, in an 81-77 win. There were skeptics that Curry would ever be a good Division I guard; those skeptics shut up a long time ago.

— Curry’s father Dell played 16 years in the NBA; he made 40.2% of his 3’s in his career. Dell Curry went to Virginia Tech; so did Curry’s mother.
Steph Curry wanted to play college ball at Virginia Tech, which had gone 19-29 in conference games the previous three seasons, but Curry was a pretty skinny kid, so the coach passed on giving him a scholarship.
That coach was Seth Greenberg, now one of ESPN’s college basketball studio guys.

— 9-time Pro Bowl guard Zack Martin has retired from the Cowboys/NFL after a great career. He will be get inducted into the Hall of Fame five years from now, that’s how good he was.

— Last year, Brett Baty wore number 22 for the Mets; this winter, Mets signed OF Juan Soto for $51M a year. Soto also wears number 22; Baty gave up number 22 to Soto and Thursday, Soto gifted Baty with a black Chevy SUV, which apparently cost $92,000, pocket change for Soto.

— LaSalle basketball coach Fran Dunphy is going to retire at the end of the season; the 76-year old Dunphy has made the NCAA Tournament 17 times in his career- he has a 623-376 record at Penn, Temple, La Salle— one of the three best coaches in Ivy League history.

Famous birthdays, February 21st:
Tyne Daly, 79
William Petersen, 72
Kelsey Grammar, 70
Alan Trammell, 67
Steve Francis, 48
Jennifer Love Hewitt, 46
Andre Barrett, 43
Bo Naylor, 25

— Texas/USC cancelled their spring football games this year, like Nebraska/Florida State did. Texas/USC made up BS reasons for cancelling the games; Nebraska coach Matt Rhule was honest, citing teams watching the Cornhuskers’ spring game, then enticing players to enter the transfer portal and bolt Lincoln.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell: ”I would assume that you’re going to see less and less spring games just because of that part of it.”
— San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is out for the year, with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The condition is typically treated with blood-thinning medication, which usually prevents a player from playing a contact sport like basketball.
Spurs are optimistic that Wembanyama will make a full recovery for the start of next season.

— Bronx Bombers gave manager Bret Boone a 2-year contract extension, through the 2027 season; Boone is 603-429 in the regular season, making the playoffs six of seven years. He is 22-23 in playoff games, getting to the World Series last year, for the first time.
In his seven years as manager, New York has paid out a total of $1,744,951,625 in salaries to their players, an average of $249,278,934/year.

— Kansas City Royals signed P Ross Stripling to a minor league deal; Stripling has pitched in the majors for nine years, for four different teams- he is 40-54, 4.17 in 248 games (129 starts).

Term of the Day: robber baron- a person who becomes rich through ruthless and often unscrupulous business practices.

Saturday’s Den: Some early conference tournament trends…….

March 1st is next week; conference tournaments are right around the corner. Here is an early look at some conference tournament trends……..
Teams that have done well in conference tournaments:

— WCC
Gonzaga is 27-4 in its last 31 WCC tournament games.
Saint Mary’s is 14-7 in its last 21 WCC tournament games.

— Big 18
Last four years, Illinois won the Big 18 conference tournament twice; they lost in the first round the other two years.
Last 12 years, Wisconsin is 9-3 in its first conference tournament game.

— Big X
Last 11 years, Iowa State has won the Big X tournament five times; the other six of those years, Cyclones were 1-6 in tournament games.
Since 2017, Arizona was 14-2 in the Pac-12 tournament, winning four tournaments, but they’re not in the Pac-12 anymore.
Since 2008, Kansas is 36-8 in conference tournaments.
Since 2018, Houston is 14-4 in conference tournament games, winning two tournaments.
Last 14 years, Colorado is 13-1 in its first conference tournament game.
Last seven years, Cincinnati is 7-0 in its first conference tournament game.
