Turner hits clutch 3, Tennessee beats VCU
November 30, 2019
By The Associated Press

NICEVILLE, Fla. (AP) Lamonte Turner made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give No. 17 Tennessee a 72-69 victory over No. 20 VCU in the Emerald Coast Classic third-place game on Saturday.

Turner's big shot spoiled a dramatic comeback by the Rams, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half.

John Fulkerson led Tennessee (6-1) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Bowden added 14 points and Turner scored 12 for the Vols.

Marcus Santos-Silva led VCU (6-2) with 22 points and De'Riante Jenkins had 15.

Jenkins hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 69-69 with 5 seconds left. Tennessee called timeout and inbounded the ball from the frontcourt with 1.7 seconds remaining. Turner launched the winning shot from the right corner.

NO. 21 COLORADO 59, SACRAMENTO STATE 45

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Tyler Bey pulled down 17 rebounds and scored 11 points, including a reverse layup off a sensational spin on his way to the basket in the closing minutes as Colorado fended off scrappy Sacramento State.

The Buffaloes improved to 6-0 for the second time in three seasons, but it wasn't easy. The Hornets (4-1) were within striking distance at 45-40 after the only basket of the night by their leading scorer, Joshua Patton.

Evan Battey added 11 points and McKinley Wright IV scored 10 for Colorado, which closed the game on a 14-5 run, the Buffs' only dominant stretch of the night.

Ethan Esposito's 12 points led the Hornets, who only got four points from Patton, 14.5 below his average, on 1-for-8 shooting.

NO. 25 XAVIER 87, LIPSCOMB 62

CINCINNATI (AP) - Tyrique Jones had his fourth double-double of the season, Paul Scruggs scored 15 points, and Xavier recovered from its first loss by beating Lipscomb.

The Musketeers (7-1) were coming off 70-65 loss to Florida in the championship game of the Charleston Classic.

Jones finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, leading a surge late in the first half that put Xavier in control. Naji Marshall scored nine consecutive points for Xavier in the second half and finished with 13 as the Musketeers piled up a season high in points.

Lipscomb (2-5) was led by freshman point guard KJ Johnson, who had a season-high 25 points. Ahsan Asadullah added 18 points and nine rebounds.

Bey leads No. 21 Colorado past Sac State 59-45
November 30, 2019

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) Colorado coach Tad Boyle accused his 21st-ranked Buffaloes of playing to the crowd, sparse though it was.

''The epitome of winning ugly,'' Boyle said after the Buffaloes improved to 6-0 by fending off scrappy Sacramento State 59-45 on Saturday night at the half-empty UC Events Center thanks to Tyler Bey's 11 points and 17 rebounds.

Boyle saluted his team's defensive tenacity but bashed the Buffs' discordant offense.

''I want to just apologize to every fan that came by because that's not the Colorado basketball offensively that they deserve to see,'' Boyle said. ''We're not making plays for each other. We're thinking about ourselves. We're thinking about our own shots. There's just no flow on offense.''

That has to change, he said, ''because we can't beat the teams that we want to beat on our schedule as we move forward playing like that on the offensive end. Ten assists and 19 turnovers isn't going to cut it.''

The Hornets (4-1) were within striking distance of the Buffs (6-0) at 45-40 when their leading scorer, Joshua Patton, made his only basket of the night with just over four minutes remaining.

''Yeah, we did have a shot,'' Patton said. ''We didn't capitalize on it.''

Patton picked up his fifth foul about 20 seconds after his only basket and took a seat with just 4 points, 14.5 below his average, on 1-of-8 shooting.

Shane Gatling sank both free throws. Even Battey (11 points) followed with two quick baskets to make it 51-40. The first one, a finger roll, came at 3:16 and was the Buffs' first field goal in 7 1/2 minutes.

''There's no excuse for the way we played tonight,'' said McKinley Wright IV, who added 10 points for Colorado, which closed the game on a 14-5 run, the Buffaloes' only dominant stretch of the night.

''We (stunk) in the first half. We (stunk) the whole game,'' Wright said. ''Nineteen turnovers is terrible. But we got a win, so nothing to be made about. But we have to do better.''

TURKEY HANGOVER

Boyle said on the Pac-12 Network's pregame show that he was worried the Buffs, who were coming off a big win over Clemson to claim the MGM Resorts Main Event Championship in Las Vegas, would have a ''turkey hangover.''

Sure enough, the Buffs came out lethargic, plodding their way to a 24-16 halftime lead. They did hold Patton scoreless, however, thanks to a thunderous block by Lucas Siewert when Patton was going up for a breakaway basket.

The arena might have been rocking at that point, but a trio of factors combined to keep most seats empty. The Buffaloes' football team was playing at Utah at the same time; students were off for Thanksgiving break; and nasty weather kept a lot of people home as strong winds whipped up the foot of snow on the ground.

BIG PICTURE:

Sacramento State: The Hornets, led by Ethan Esposito's 12 points, gave it the Buffs a good run but they needed the usual production from Patton to really have a shot at the stunner. ''It's always disappointing when you get a loss, especially against a team like this that's ranked 21 in the nation,'' Patton said. ''You're over here playing them well at their place, playing good defense, but sometimes the ball just doesn't go your way.''

Colorado: The Buffaloes committed too many turnovers and missed too many free throws - nine - but they outrebounded the Hornets by nine and came through in the clutch.

POLL IMPLICATIONS

This one may have been ugly but it was a pretty good test and the Buffs passed it with another double-digit victory for the 12th 6-0 start in program history.

UP NEXT

Sacramento State: The Hornets return home to face UC Merced on Tuesday night.

Colorado: The Buffaloes host Loyola Marymount on Wednesday night before a big trip to Kansas to face the fourth-ranked Jayhawks on Wednesday night. ''I'm sure every player thinks about it a little bit,'' Wright said. ''But our job is business against Loyola Marymount. There are teams around the country who lose on their home floor. We don't want that to be us. So, we have to take care of home first and then think about the Kansas game.''

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Top six picks for Week 13 in Westgate Super Contest:

6) Tennessee +2.5 (712)

5) Arizona +3 (723)

4) Jets -3 (879)

3) San Francisco +6 (886)

2) New England -3 (920)

1) Green Bay -6.5 (1.034)

2019 record: 38-31-3

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday??.

13) Auburn 48, Alabama 45? There were five TD?s scored in a 5:03 span of this game, late in 2nd quarter. Score was 31-27 Alabama at halftime. Total in the game was 50.5.

Kudos to CBS sideline reporter Jame Erdahl, who had the unenviable task of Interviewing Nick Saban at halftime, when he??.wasn?t happy after Auburn kicked a last second FG. When I say he wasn?t happy, thats a gross understatement.

? Auburn had two pick-6?s, one a 100-yarder that put Tigers up, 37-31.
? Alabama ran the kickoff after the first pick-6 back 100 yards for a TD.
? Alabama outgained Auburn 515-354.
? Penalties: Alabama 13-96; Auburn 9-60.
? Alabama missed the tying 30-yard FG off the left upright with 2:00 left.

12) Indiana 44, Purdue 41 OT? Hoosiers? QB Ramsey started for Indiana the last two years, then lost his starting job this offseason; instead of transferring, like so many college QB?s do when they lose their starting job, Ramsey stayed at Indiana because likes his teammates. The other QB got hurt, and Ramsey made the most out of getting his job back.

Indiana winds up wth a winning record in conference play for first time since 1993.

Purdue QB O?Connell is a walk-on who started this season as the 4th-stringer; he threw for 408 yards, three TD?s in a losing cause.

11) Ohio State 56, Michigan 27? Buckeyes win this rivalry game for 8th year in row (4-4 ATS); they?ve scored 118 points in last two meetings, 30+ points in last seven.

10) Syracuse 39, Wake Forest 30 OT? From all we can tell, Orangemen are only 2nd team to score a defensive TD in OT while they were protecting a lead; Arizona State did it against USC 20 or so years ago.

9) Duke 27, Miami 17/Florida 40, Florida State 17:

Miami and Florida State are both 6-6, which is both disappointing and surprising; they?ve got to recruit their home state better. Lot of good high school players in Florida, but everyone recruits the Sunshine State, and hard.

8) Missouri fired football coach Barry Odom, who went 50-50 in four years in Columbia, but lost five of his last six games this season. Still not sure why Missouri left the Big X for the SEC? lack of playing longtime rivals like Kansas/Nebraska has hurt their attendance.

7) Football upsets:
? West Virginia (+13.5) 20, TCU 17
? South Alabama (+10.5) 34, Arkansas State 30
? Duke (+8.5) 27, Miami 17
? Boston College (+8) 26, Pittsburgh 19
? UNLV (+7) 33, Nevada 30 OT
? Northwestern (+7) 29, Illinois 10

6) Cincinnati 72, UNLV 65 OT? Bearcats played their 3rd straight OT game, rallying back from down 33-24 at the half. UNLV was 0-3 in OT games in November; they had four guys play 36:00+.

5) Ohio U 91, Detroit 81? Detroit G Brad Calipari sat out LY, after sitting on his dad?s bench at Kentucky the two years before that. He wanted to play, so he transferred to Detroit, where he is playing 22.2 mpg, scoring 6.2 ppg, making 40.7% of his 3?s.

4) Florida State 63, Purdue 60 OT? Seminoles win Emerald Coast Classic, winning both games this weekend by 3 points. FSU has won seven games in a row since losing their opener at Pitt.

3) Basketball upsets:
? North Dakota (+10.5) 80, Georgia Southern 68
? Prairie View (+8.5) 79, UTSA 72
? Cal-Northridge (+7.5) 73, Fresno State 72
? Navy (+7) 76, Brown 56
? Fort Wayne (+6.5) 71, Grand Canyon 60
? St Francis PA (+6.5) 79, St Joe?s 63
? Northern Arizona (+6) 76, South Dakota 72
? NC-Greensboro (+6) 65, Georgetown 61

2) Richmond 64, Boston College 44? Spiders won six of their first seven games after going 25-40 the last two years; they?ve got wins over Wisconsin, Vandy, BC, power-5 wins.

1) They may have played schedule #350 so far (out of 353), but Liberty is one of only 20 unbeaten teams left in the country, and that is surprising. Flames are 9-0 already.

December 1, 2019
By The Associated Press

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 22 points and backcourt mate Darryl Morsell helped fifth-ranked Maryland limit Marquette star Markus Howard to six points as the Terrapins remained unbeaten with an 84-63 victory over the Golden Eagles on Sunday in the championship game of the Orlando Invitational.

Howard scored a combined 91 points in his first two games of the eight-team tournament at Disney World. However, Marquette's all-time scoring leader was just 1 of 12 from the field in this one, including 0 for 6 on 3-point attempts.

Cowan captured tournament MVP honors with 72 points in three games, including a career-best 30 against Temple on Thanksgiving. Morsell had 17 points and 10 rebounds, while guarding the 5-foot-11 Howard most of the afternoon.

Maryland (8-0) is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season.

Aaron Wiggins scored 15 points for the Terps.

Brendan Bailey led Marquette (5-2) with a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers.

NO. 14 ARIZONA 73, WAKE FOREST 66

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Dylan Smith scored 20 points, Chase Jeter added 17 and Arizona beat Wake Forest in the Wooden Legacy championship game.

It was Arizona's first early season tournament title since 2014, when it won the Maui Invitational.

The Wildcats (9-0) led most of the game with their largest advantage being 56-41 8 minutes into the second half. The Demon Deacons (5-3) had a 14-4 run to get within 68-64 with 43 seconds remaining but could not draw closer.

Olivier Sarr led Wake with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Brandon Childress scored 19.

NO. 22 VILLANOVA 83, LA SALLE 72

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Justin Moore had 25 points off the bench, Saddiq Bey scored 19 and Villanova beat La Salle.

Villanova (5-2) went on a 28-6 run midway through the first half to build a 48-28 cushion at halftime. The Explorers closed within 10 twice in the second half.

Ed Croswell led La Salle (4-3) with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds. David Beatty had 12 points for the Explorers.

Moore scored 15 points in the first half to help Villanova build the lead. Bey and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl each had 10 rebounds.

No. 22 Washington shuts down South Dakota 75-55
December 2, 2019

SEATTLE (AP) Jaden McDaniels scored 20 points, Isaiah Stewart had 16 points and 15 rebounds and No. 22 Washington beat South Dakota 75-55 on Monday night.

Washington won its fourth straight by holding the nation's best 3-point shooting team to 17.4% shooting from beyond the arc. South Dakota entered the game hitting 47.4% of its 3s and featured college basketball's best 3-point shooter, Tyler Hagedorn.

The Coyotes hit just 4 of 23 and the Huskies held Hagedorn, who had hit 18 of 24 3s coming in, without a 3 on five attempts. South Dakota has lost three of four.

Washington held South Dakota scoreless for stretches of more than 3 minutes three times in the first half. The longest was 5:55 and helped the Huskies put together a 13-2 run late in the first half.

McDaniels started the run with a 3 and a turnaround jumper from the baseline, part of a run of 10 consecutive points for the freshman forward. He added a floater on a drive and a 17-foot jumper to end the run and put Washington up 32-23 at the break.

McDaniels' 15 points in the first half had a lot to do with that lead, and so did the Huskies defense. They held the nation's top 3-point shooting team to 3 of 13 (23.1'%) from behind the arc in the first half and 27.3% (9 of 33) overall.

Washington extended the run into the second half, scoring seven straight points to start the period, building a 39-23 lead on a pass from McDaniels to Stewart through traffic for a dunk on the fast break.

Stanley Umude led South Dakota with 17 points, Cody Kelly scored 11 and Hagedorn had 10.

The Coyotes cut the Huskies' lead to four multiple times midway through the second half. But Stewart slammed home his own miss to make it 58-52 with 5:23 left and Washington pulled away from there, finishing the game on a 19-3 run.

Jamal Bey added 14 for the Huskies and Nahziah Carter had 12 points and nine rebounds.

BIG PICTURE

South Dakota: Picked to finish second in the Summit League, the Coyotes showed grit and skill against the Huskies. While it doesn't help the bottom line, the loss will help South Dakota when conference play begins.

Washington: South Dakota offered the Huskies something of a challenge, forcing them to defend the 3 and the paint. Troubling that Washington failed to dominate the smaller Coyotes early in the game. We'll see just how far the Huskies have come when No. 9 Gonzaga comes to town Sunday.

UP NEXT

South Dakota: The Coyotes return home to play NAIA Mount Marty on Friday after a stretch of four games on the road.

Washington: The Huskies continue a seven-game nonconference homestand with Eastern Washington on Wednesday, their last warmup before hosting No. 9 Gonzaga on Sunday.

Tuesday?s 6-pack

? Big X: Oklahoma (-8.5, 62.5) vs Oklahoma

? Memphis (-9.5, 57.5) vs Cincinnati

? SEC: LSU (-7, 55) vs Georgia

? Ohio State (-16, 56) vs Wisconsin

? Clemson (-29, 54) vs Virginia

Monday?s quiz

Tuesday?s Den: Nobody asked me, but??

13) Seahawks 34, Vikings 30:
? Seattle outscored Vikings 24-0 during a 10:32 span of 2nd half.
? Seahawks ran ball for 218 yards, getting 29 on a fake punt to extend one drive.
? Kirk Cousins is now 0-8 on Monday Night Football.
? Only four penalties were called; should be more games like that.

12) 55-year old Chris Petersen is stepping down as Washington?s football coach, citing the need to ?re-charge?.

Coaching a big time program like that takes its toll, and with guys making so much money, guys are retiring earlier- Bob Stoops, Urban Meyer and now Petersen have all walked away in the last few years.

11) Michigan plays Louisville tonight in the Yum! Center; Wolverines went from unranked to #4 in country in this week?s top 25. Louisville is the 4th team to be ranked #1 this season.

10) Bad news for Georgetown basketball; their 2nd and 5th-leading scorers are both going to transfer.James Akinjo and Josh LeBlanc. Akinjo was the Hoyas? point guard; LaPhonso Ellis said in the ESPN studio Monday night that Georgetown now ?has no chance to make NCAAs?

9) Other news on college football coaching carousel:
? Boston College fired coach Steve Addazio.
? Rutgers re-hired Greg Schiano as coach; he was their coach from 2001-11.
? Ole Miss fired coach Matt Luke; the players aren?t happy.
? South Florida fired Charlie Strong.
? Old Dominion coach Bobby Wilder left ODU after a 1-11 season.
? Texas Longhorns fired both their coordinators.

8) Random thought: Why is Creighton in the Big East? The school is in freakin? Omaha, which is in Nebraska, which is pretty much in the middle of the country. I mean, Omaha is in eastern Nebraska, but Nebraska is directly below South Dakota- Creighton shouldn?t be in the Big East.

7) Virginia Commonwealth has had three basketball coaches in six years; they?ve sold out 140 consecutive home games. It is a very good job, it pays $1.2M a year, but they have trouble keeping guys there. Mark Few makes $1.78M a year at Gonzaga; at some point, you?d think someone would settle down there. I wonder if Shaka Smart regrets leaving?

6) So far this college basketball season, Ivy League underdogs are 13-6 ATS; league is getting better.

5) Disney/Apple hit home runs with the Christmas commercials they?re running during football games; the Apple commercial shows a couple of young girls using a tablet computer to make a video, featuring their grandfather and their late grandmother, using old photographs.

The Disney commercial shows a father and his daughter, as she prepares to leave for college; he relives their trips to Disney, back when she was a little girl. Two very good commercials.

4) Weird scheduling: these division rivals haven?t played each other yet this season, will play twice in last four weeks of season:

Titans-Texans, Eagles-Giants, Browns-Bengals.

3) Cincinnati Reds gave 3B Mike Moustakas a 4-year, $64M contract.

2) Memphis Tigers beat Cincinnati 34-24 in their regular season finale Saturday; the teams meet again this Saturday in the Conference USA title game, also in Memphis. Unusual.

1) We had around 18 inches of snow here in beautiful upstate New York the last couple days, depending on which town you live in, so here is a warm thought:

Baseball?s winter meetings start Monday in San Diego.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
David Schwab

This week?s annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge in college basketball continues on Tuesday night with a trio of very interesting betting matchups.

First up is a battle between the Big Ten?s No. 4 Michigan Wolverines and the ACC?s Louisville Cardinals as the new No. 1 ranked team in the nation. Later that night, the No. 17 Florida State Seminoles will be on the road against the Indiana Hoosiers.

The featured showdown at 9:30 p.m. (ET) on ESPN is a matchup between the No. 10 Duke Blue Devils and the No. 11 Michigan State Spartans.

No. 4 Michigan at No. 1 Louisville (ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET)
Opening Odds: Louisville -7, Total 138.5

Betting Matchup

Michigan brings a straight-up seven-game winning streak into this game, capped off by last week?s upsets over North Carolina and Gonzaga as an underdog. The Wolverines have gone 5-2 against the spread with the total going OVER in three of the last four games. Those two victories against Top 10 teams secured this season?s Battle 4 Atlantis trophy. Michigan jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead in Friday?s championship. It ended that game shooting 46.2 percent from three-point range on 13 attempts.

The Cardinals have also won their first seven games SU but they fall to 3-4 ATS. They were able to cover as 10 ?-point favorites in last Friday?s 71-54 victory against Western Kentucky. Louisville has closed as a double-digit favorite in six of its first seven games. Jordan Nwora scored 25 points his last time out. The junior forward leads the Cardinals in scoring with an average of 21.9 points per game. Overall, the team is averaging 81.7 PPG while holding opponents to 61.3 points.

Betting Trends

-- The Wolverines are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games against the ACC and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven road games.

-- The Cardinals have gone 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games against a Big Ten team. The total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 13 games played at home.

-- These two have split a pair of postseason matchups (SU and ATS) with Louisville winning in 2013 (national title game) and Michigan winning in 2017.

No. 17 Florida State at Indiana (ESPN2, 9:00 p.m. ET)
Opening Odds: Indiana -2.5, Total 139

Betting Matchup

Florida State lost its season opener to Pittsburgh 63-61 as a four-point home favorite ahead of its current SU seven-game winning streak. The Seminoles are 5-3 ATS closing as favorites in seven of their first eight games. They beat Purdue 63-60 in overtime on Saturday as slight 1 ?-point favorites. The total stayed UNDER 124 ? points in that game. Led by sophomore guard Devin Vassel (12.5 points), Florida State is scoring an average of 76 points and it is holding teams to 59.9 points at the other end of the court.

With Saturday?s 64-50 win against South Dakota State as 18 ?-point favorite, the Hoosiers are off to a perfect 7-0 SU start. After failing to cover in that game, they slipped to 5-2 ATS. Indiana has closed as a double-digit favorite in all seven games and the total has gone OVER in five of those outings. Freshman Trayce Jackson continues to have the hot hand for the Hoosiers with a combined 37 points in his last two games. In Saturday?s win, he posted his fourth-straight double-double.

Betting Trends

-- The Seminoles have failed to cover in 12 of their last 17 games against the Big Ten. The total has stayed UNDER in 21 of their last 26 games on the road.

-- The Hoosiers are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven matchups against a team from the ACC. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games against an ACC team.

-- This will be the first meeting between these two teams.

No. 10 Duke at No. 11 Michigan State (ESPN. 9:30 p.m. ET)
Opening Odds: Michigan State -5, Total 145.5

Betting Matchup

Following last Tuesday?s stunning 85-83 loss to Stephen F. Austin as 28-point favorites, the Blue Devils could not cover the 24 ? points on Saturday in an 83-70 win against Winthrop. The total went OVER in each of those games and it has gone OVER in six of Duke?s (7-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) last seven contests. Freshman sensation Cassius Stanley will miss some playing time after hurting his left leg in Saturday?s game. Freshman Matthew Hurt scored a season-high 20 points in the winning effort.

Michigan State has losses (SU and ATS) to Kentucky and Virginia Tech mixed in with five SU wins as part of its 5-2 start. It has failed to cover in its last three outings to fall to 2-5 ATS. The total stayed UNDER 141 ? points in the Spartans? 75-62 win against UCLA last Wednesday closing as 14-point favorites. It has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. Senior guard Cassius Winston scored 20 points in Wednesday?s win to exceed his team-high 17.9-point scoring average. He also leads the team in assists (6.0).

Betting Trends

-- The Blue Devils are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games against a Big Ten team and the total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 12 games played on Tuesday.

-- The Spartans have an 18-8 record ATS in their last 26 home games. The total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in 10 of their last 13 games against the ACC.

-- Duke has a SU 8-2 record against Michigan State going back to 2004. Yet, the Spartans hold the slight 5-4-1 edge ATS with the total going OVER in eight of the ten games. Michigan State beat Duke 68-67 as a slight 2 ?-point underdog in last season?s Elite Eight.
