Watson leads No. 18 Dayton to 81-53 win over Grambling State
December 24, 2019
By The Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Ibi Watson scored a career-high 30 points in his first start, and No. 18 Dayton recovered from its second loss of the season by beating Grambling State 81-53 on Monday night.

The Flyers (10-2) were missing point guard Jalen Crutcher, who fell and hit his head during a 78-76 overtime loss to Colorado on Saturday. Dayton shuffled its guard rotation, and Watson made an immediate impact as a starter for the first time this season.

The junior had 15 points in the opening half, three shy of his career high. Watson scored 10 during a 17-2 run that put the Flyers ahead.

The Tigers (6-7) cut a 20-point deficit to 52-42 midway through the second half before Rodney Chatman hit a pair of 3-pointers and Watson had a four-point play that put the Flyers back in control. Chatman added 17 points.

Watson went 4 of 5 from beyond the arc while becoming the first Flyers player to score 30 points since Josh Cunningham had 32 against Rhode Island on Jan. 20, 2018.

Kelton Edwards had 13 points for Grambling State, which went 2 of 19 from beyond the arc.

No. 21 WASHINGTON 72, HAWAII 61

HONOLULU (AP) - Isaiah Stewart had 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 21 Washington over Hawaii in the Diamond Head Classic semifinals.

Quade Green added 11 points and seven assists for the Huskies (10-2), who will play Houston for the tournament title on Wednesday. Jaden McDaniels had nine points and 13 rebounds, and Nahziah Carter chipped in with 10 points.

Stewart made 13 of 21 shots from the field. He scored 16 points in the first half and finished with his fourth straight double-double.

Hawaii got within six on Zigmars Raimo's basket in transition with 5:28 to play, but went scoreless for more than three minutes while the Huskies reeled off an eight-point run to stretch their lead to 59-45 with 2:04 remaining.

Justin Webster had 16 points and Raimo added 15 points with 15 rebounds to lead the Rainbow Warriors (8-4), who shot a season-low 28%.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl:

? Baltimore Ravens 9-4

? San Francisco 49ers 4-1

? New Orleans Saints 6-1

? Kansas City/New England 8-1

? Green Bay Packers 10-1

? Seattle Seahawks 14-1

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Merry Christmas, everyone??.

13) Lamar Jackson isn?t playing for the Ravens Sunday; they?ve already clinched the #1 seed in the AFC, so Jackson and some of his friends will take Sunday off when the Steelers come calling.

Robert Griffin III will get the start at QB for Baltimore; if that doesn?t send you running to the casino to wager on Pittsburgh, I?m not sure what would. Griffin is 15-25 as an NFL starter, 6-19 in his last 25 games. His last NFL start was three years ago.

12) Other NFL stuff:
? Case Keenum will start at QB for injured Dwayne Haskins (ankle) for Washington Sunday.

11)

10) Tennessee Vols officially announced the addition of Santiago Vescovi, a point guard from Uruguay who most recently played for the NBA Global Academy in Australia.

18-year-old Vescovi signed with Tennessee November 22. He will join the team this weekend, is awaiting standard NCAA, Southeastern Conference clearance protocols before becoming eligible to play in games, which probably won?t come until early January.

9) Kawhi Leonard?s agent is a guy named Mitch Frankel who doesn?t represent any other active NBA players. That is pretty unusual, an agent with one client.

8) Miami Marlins have C/1B Francisco Cervelli a one-year deal worth $2M.

7) 2B Cesar Hernandez signed a one-year deal with Cleveland worth $6M.

6) Mets gave P Dellin Betances a one-year deal worth $10.5M, wth the chance to get up to $13M, with incentives.

5) New Mexico Lobos suspended two starters, F Carlton Bragg, PG JJ Caldwell indefinitely,

Bragg, a team captain, transferred from Kansas in January 2018, is averaging 13.7 ppg, 10.8 rag and 1.4 blocks/game this season.Caldwell leads the Mountain West in assists at 5.7 per game, and averages 5.8 points per game.

4) NFL home favorites are 54-89-6 ATS this season.
Road favorites are 48-41-2 ATS.

3) This is how the Oakland Raiders can still make the playoffs: ( IMO THIS MIGHT BE POSSIBLE )
? Raiders win in Denver.
? Colts win in Jacksonville.
? Ravens beat Pittsburgh
? Texans beat Tennessee

If those four things happen, then one of these teams also has to win:
Chicago, Detroit, LA Chargers or New England.

2) Merry Christmas to this guy: A customer at a William Hill sports book in Las Vegas turned a $5 bet into a $100,000 jackpot when he went a perfect 15-for-15 on the William Hill $100,000 Parlay Card this past weekend.

Guy had to sweat the Dolphins blowing a 34-12 lead in the last 6:21 of regulation, then waiting until the last play of OT to kick the winning FG.

1) Hope you all have a great Christmas; if you don?t celebrate Christmas, have a great Wednesday. Nine basketball games on TV Wednesday, five NBA games, four college games from Hawai?i; thats a good day.

Ga. Tech routs Hawaii, 'under' hits
December 25, 2019

HONOLULU (AP) Michael Devoe scored 18 points and Moses Wright added 16 to help Georgia Tech rally past Hawaii 70-53 for third place in the Diamond Head Classic Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets (6-6) shot 50% and erased a nine-point, second-half deficit to hand the Rainbow Warriors (8-5) their second straight loss.

Hawaii was outscored 41-21 in the second half, when it shot just 22.2% from the field. It was 16-of-44 shooting (36.4%) for the game.

???Who we are and what we???re about is defensive intensity,??? Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner said. ???We gotta try to hold teams under 40% from the field and 30% from 3 and we accomplished that feat and that???s why we won the game.???

Georgia Tech took the lead for good, 49-48, with 8:17 remaining on a Wright bucket inside. It was part of a 21-2 run, capped by a pair of free throws by James Banks III to stretch the lead to 68-50 with 1:17 left to play.

Banks scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. The Yellow Jackets shot 14 of 16 from the free-throw line after halftime and finished 18 of 23 from the stripe.

???I thought James Banks gave us great energy and minutes in the second half. I thought Michael Devoe had some really good plays, Jose just led us the right way, I thought Bubba Parham was outstanding, he was just solid, Moses Wright again was just really good for us. It was just a good team win,??? Pastner said.

Drew Buggs had nine points for Hawaii.

Hawaii closed out the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 32-29 lead at the intermission.

BIG PICTURE

Georgia Tech committed 14 turnovers, but only five came after halftime. The Yellow Jackets turned it over a season-low nine times in Monday???s 70-59 loss to Houston.

Hawaii shot just 1 of 15 on 3-pointers in the loss (6.7%), which came two days after it went 9 of 39 from beyond the arc in a 72-61 loss to No. 21 Washington.

???I thought we played a good first half and started the second half the right way. We were up nine and then the wheels fell off a little bit and we didn???t respond the right way, but all credit to Georgia Tech, they toughened up when they needed to and we will learn from it and get better,??? Hawaii acting coach Chris Gerlufson said.

USHERED OUT

Georgia Tech???s Jordan Usher was ejected with 9:27 left to play when he was whistled for a flagrant-2 foul after getting tangled up with Hawaii???s Dawson Carper. Hawaii tied it at 47 when Carper hit one of two free throws, but the Yellow Jackets clamped down on defense and separated with their big second-half run.

???When Jordan got that flagrant-2 our defense kind of even ratcheted up another step. It???s interesting in sports, Jordan goes out and it might have given us a spark because another guy goes in and the chemistry of it all (changes) because instead of us playing small, we went big when Jordan went out and actually it ended up being in our favor,??? Pastner said.

NEXT UP

Georgia Tech: Picks up ACC play Tuesday at No. 17 Florida State and closes out a slate of five games away from home at North Carolina on Jan. 4. The Yellow Jackets have lost their last three games against the Seminoles, who own a 42-28 advantage in the series.

Hawaii: Will host Maine Sunday in its final non-conference game. The teams have a common opponent in No. 21 Washington. The Huskies beat Maine 72-53 on Nov. 19 in Seattle and handed the Rainbow Warriors a 72-61 loss Monday.

Gonzaga latest to hit No. 1 in Top 25
December 23, 2019
By The Associated Press

Gonzaga is the latest No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 men???s college basketball poll that has had no stability on the top line.

The Bulldogs moved up a spot to take over for Kansas, which lasted only a week at No. 1 before losing at now-No. 10 Villanova. At the time, that had marked the first time the AP poll has had five different No. 1s before New Year???s Day.

And now it???s six, with the Zags (13-1) earning 54 of 65 first-place votes to outdistance Ohio State in a year with no dominant team.

Gonzaga's only loss was to No. 11 Michigan in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas on Nov. 29. The Zags have won five straight since, including victories at No. 21 Washington and No. 24 Arizona as well as a home win against North Carolina.

???I don???t think they should be doing polls this year until March,??? Gonzaga coach Mark Few said after Saturday???s win against Eastern Washington. ???I???m serious, I mean, it???s just an effort in futility at this point.???

This is the eighth season to have as many as six different teams reach No. 1, though it has happened now three times in the past five years. The record for an entire season is seven, set in 1982-83 when names like Michael Jordan and Ralph Sampson were still in the college ranks.

Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and Louisville were the first four teams to hit No. 1. Throw in Kansas, and none has won more than twice before suffering a loss.

The Zags won???t stumble this week, at least; they don???t play again until hosting Detroit Mercy next Monday evening after another poll is released.

BUCKEYES CLIMB

The second-ranked Buckeyes (11-1) have put together a nonconference resume likely to help their NCAA Tournament seeding come Selection Sunday.

The Buckeyes had lopsided wins against Villanova and at then-ranked UNC, then beat Kentucky over the weekend in a matchup of top-6 teams. That helped them earn nine first-place votes to jump three spots Monday.

THE TOP TIER

Louisville remained at No. 3 ahead of its state rivalry game against Kentucky this weekend, followed by Duke and Kansas, which fell four spots to No. 5.

Oregon, Baylor, still-unbeaten Auburn, Memphis and Villanova rounded out the top 10.

RISING

Villanova made the week's biggest jump, climbing eight spots after taking down the Jayhawks. No. 12 Butler and No. 15 San Diego State also had big moves, each climbing five spots.

In all, 16 teams moved up from last week.

SLIDING

Six teams fell in the poll, all taking significant slides.

The biggest was Kentucky, which fell 13 spots to No. 19 after losses to Utah and Ohio State in Las Vegas. Arizona fell eight spots to No. 24 after following the Gonzaga loss with a loss to St. John's. And Virginia fell seven spots to No. 16 after a home loss to South Carolina.

No. 13 Maryland (down six spots), No. 18 Dayton (five) and Kansas (four) had the other slides.

STATUS QUO

Louisville and Duke were the only teams to remain in their position from last week.

WELCOME

Iowa was the lone new addition at No. 25, with the Hawkeyes (9-3) cracking the poll for the first time this season after beating Minnesota, Iowa State and Cincinnati.

FAREWELL FOR NOW

Tennessee (No. 21) fell out of the poll to make room for Iowa after a loss at Cincinnati.

CONFERENCE WATCH

Iowa's arrival gave the Big Ten a national-best six teams in the AP Top 25, a haul that included preseason No. 1 Michigan State at No. 14 and Penn State at No. 20.

The Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conferences were next with four teams each while the Pac-12 had three.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for baseball in 2020:

88? St Louis Cardinals

86.5? Cleveland Indians

84.5? Los Angeles Angels

81? Arizona Diamondbacks

79.5? Texas Rangers

75.5? Colorado Rockies

**********

Armadillo: Friday's Den: In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions??..

13) I?d like everyone to be nicer to each other; life is short, lets enjoy it.

Lets tolerate our differences; I like the A?s, you like someone else. you like beer, I like Cherry Coke, our differences are what make life interesting.

12) A friend of mine wouldn?t talk to me for a year because I didn?t vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 (I voted for the 3rd party candidate). Why take life that seriously? Especially the way Presidential elections are, the Democrat almost always wins New York anyway.

11) Would a date with Gina Gershon be too much to ask for? (probably, yes?..)

10) Sounds like one of the things I?ve been posting in this space for years will finally happen; both leagues should have the DH in 2022. Both leagues should have the same rules.

9) Lets do away with Daylight Savings Time; who needs sunlight at 5:30am? Keep the clocks the way they are in the summer. Let it stay light as late in the day as possible.

8) Can we get rid of the Electoral College? Whoever gets the most votes should win, yes?

7) Every kid would learn basic life skills in high school: cooking, laundry, how to write a check, how to do a budget, the divorce laws.

When it comes to cooking, I can make one thing??reservations.

6) No Thursday NFL games, except for Week 1 and Thanksgiving Day. Instead, why not have Monday night doubleheaders every week? 7:00/10:30 games; that would be fun.

5) NBA playoff series would be two out of three until the Finals, which would be best-of-5.

4) College football teams shouldn?t be playing I-AA opponents; I mean, Alabama played Western Carolina this year, and Florida played UT-Martin AND Towson State- how does this happen? Why would anyone pay to see mismatches like this?

3) I?d be in favor of college basketball adopting the NBA?s 8-second rule for getting the ball over half court; most anything that encourages pressing and a faster-paced game is a good thing.

2) I?d make cigarettes illegal; they?re known to cause cancer. What is good about them?

1) I?d make sure DirecTV picked up the Pac-12 Network. Its not too much to ask. This is my list after all.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas.
